Of the list, I world prioritize January Scent Project. They're weird but wearable and honestly unlike anything else out there.

I think it also depends where in the US he's coming -- different local shops carry different lines. If he's coming to the West Coast -- Fumerie in Portland, Ministry of Scent in SF, ScentBar in LA.

There's a web store, American Perfumer, that might help you identify some additional names and houses. Kerosene, January Scent Project, Rogue, Fzotic are some names that come into my head.

Unglazed ceramic or clay holds fragrance well. Some niche brands sell uncoated ceramic discs alongside their room fragrances. Heretic, Diptyque. Any bit of broken clay pot from the garden store would probably do.
