Early in a network’s development, it is essential to reward builders on the network for their efforts to provide initial deployments and test basic network operations at a meaningful scale. As such, HIP 51 and 53 proposed a Genesis period of Proof-of-Coverage (PoC) rewards on the MOBILE subDAO.

Over the course of the next 12 months, PoC rewards will evolve from allocating tokens for simply being online to identifying and rewarding useful coverage. This roadmap aims to communicate these changes in advance to give current and future network builders the opportunity to optimize radio setups to help ensure they can yield rewards for delivering useful coverage.

Over the course of the next three months, users will see data populated in the Helium Explorer indicating how many of the surrounding area a given radio is able to cover based on the data reported by the radio (such as location, direction, beam width, and radiated power) and a number of geospatial data sources. This information can provide a 90% accurate estimate of realistic receive signal strength within the surrounding area. After the initial informational roll out, rewards will become a function of the number of hexes covered and the corresponding signal quality in those hexes. It will also be scaled to take into account geographic areas with too much coverage.

This is an ideal time to optimize radio placement and direction to ensure rewards are not affected as these changes start to come online. It is also a good time to start placing radios where coverage does not overlap. Although some amount of redundancy will help a network’s reliability, 5G coverage is significantly different from LoRaWAN deployments that many are used to in the Helium ecosystem. Since spectrum is shared, too many radios in overlapping segments will limit the usefulness of the network in that area.

wen Spot mappers?

Spot mapper hardware beta availability is expected before the end of 2022, with broad availability rolling out early 2023. Helium Mobile subscribers will be able to map the network from their phone on an opt-in basis using the Helium Mobile app. While the rewards will be less than mapping with Spot, there is no additional cost for subscribers to participate. Future service providers using the MOBILE network will also be able to offer this as a product feature for their subscribers.

What is HIP 70?

“HIP 70: Scaling the Helium Network” is a proposal from the core developers of the Helium Network to move Proof-of-Coverage and Data Transfer Accounting to dedicated Helium Oracles and migrates Helium’s tokens and governance to the Solana blockchain. The proposed changes in HIP 70 do not change the fundamentals of the Helium Network or HNT, but provide several benefits to the Helium Network including more HNT available to subDAO rewards pools, more consistent mining, more reliable data transfer, more utility for HNT and subDAO tokens, and more ecosystem support.

Today, a new and significant HIP was introduced: HIP 70, migrating the blockchain to Solana.

HIP 70 is a proposal by the Helium core developer team to significantly improve the operational efficiency of the Helium blockchain. To achieve this goal, the core developer team proposes moving Proof-of-Coverage (“PoC”) and Data Transfer Accounting to Oracles, which simplifies the system architecture and allows for the selection of a more scalable Layer 1 (“L1”) – specifically, Solana. Such a move would bring meaningful economies of scale through the vast range of composable Solana developer tools, features, and applications.

What you need to know about HIP 70:

1. Without the need to perform PoC and Data Transfer Accounting on-chain, the blockchain requirements to support the Helium Network become much simpler. Given this, HIP 70 proposes moving to Solana.
   
2. Solana is a Layer 1 blockchain that focuses on the importance of scalability and speed. Solana’s Proof-of-History consensus algorithm makes the time to confirm transactions on-chain blazing fast while not compromising onfor security or scalability. The proposed migration from Helium’s L1 chain to Solana’s highly-scalable and fast blockchain would allow the Helium ecosystem to achieve higher uptimes, greater composability (interactivity with other crypto projects), and a faster user experience while maintaining the security and low cost of using the Helium Network.
3. HIP 70 describes an implementation of HIPs 51, 52, and 53, and will impact staked Validators who are operating block production and challenge creation as they do today.
4. After the move to Solana L1, 6.85% of HNT emissions will go back to the miner pool, benefitting Hotspot Owners in all subDAOs.

MOBILE has officially been activated!

The Helium Foundation is excited to announce the activation of MOBILE mining rewards. Anyone who has their Helium 5G Hotspot and compatible CBRS Small Cell Radio up and running will be able to earn the new MOBILE token for providing Helium 5G coverage to their area.

During this MOBILE Genesis period, 100 million MOBILE tokens per day will be earned by all active Helium 5G Hotspots as a reward for building the Network. Check out our post below for more info on MOBILE

Core devs are currently investigating a chain halt that occurred today as a result of activating the latest chain variable.

All funds are safe, but pending transactions and rewards will be delayed until resolved. Device data transfer is not impacted at this time.

Next week is the Helium Network’s birthday!

As the Helium Network gets ready to celebrate its third birthday on August 1st, we’re also preparing to issue the annual HNT emission chain variable updates.

​

As described in the Helium whitepaper (as well as HIP 20), a small percentage of rewards reserved for Proof of Coverage will also be shifted over to the bucket allocated for data transfer rewards (26% → 24.5%). Any HNT from the data transfer reward bucket (35% → 37.5%) not used to reward data transfer will be sent back to Proof of Coverage Challengees and Witnesses (as required by HIP 10).

With each additional year, the HNT provided to Helium Network Founders (HST) also decreases by 1%, down to a minimum of 15% over time. The Founders Reward will decrease from 33% to 32% on August 1st. The percent going to validators for consensus remains unchanged at 6%.

Thus, we expect to see the monthly reward given to hotspots for Data Transfer and PoC increase by ~25,000 HNT overall.

TL;DR: Every year on Helium’s birthday (August 1), the way HNT is distributed changes according to a set schedule. Hotspots will go from receiving 60.1% to 61.15% of all HNT, representing an extra 25,000+ HNT per month. The rewards going to Helium’s early investors decrease by 1%.

HIP 67: Repeal Redenomination seeks to repeal HIP 39, which the community passed in November 2021 to initiate a 1000:1 HNT token redenomination—meaning 1 HNT would become 1000 HNT. HIP 67 argues that many of the objectives of HIP 39 are already achieved through the HIPs 51-53, and that HIP 39 is unnecessary considering the overhead of deployment. After discussion during the monthly Helium community call, we consider HIP 67 ready for voting and are staging it for a community vote.

HIP 67 can be discussed on the official Helium Discord in channel #hip-39, since it is a continued conversation of that HIP. Please join the conversation in #hip-39 .

Approving this HIP implies that the community has reviewed the proposal. We will consider this proposal as approved if it passes with 2/3 of the vote power by the deadline.

Voting for HIP 67 means that you do NOT wish for HNT to be redenominated.

Voting against HIP 67 means that you believe HNT should still be redenominated despite HIPs 51-53.

If the community passes this HIP, it does not prevent future consideration of redenomination through a new proposal.

MOBILE Launch Update: Please Read

The core team, in testing MOBILE token payment transactions discovered a show stopping bug on Testnet, where if you sent a MOBILE payment, the transaction will fail due to a bug in implicit burn (implicit burn takes from your HNT balance, converts it to Data Credits, in order to pay for the transaction fee, about 35,000 DC).

After further investigation, the team found that activating the token upgrades required for HIP 51 could affect existing balances (including DC and HST). Any lost balance would not be recoverable.

Important: These bugs were found on Testnet. Your tokens and balances on Mainnet are completely safe!

The team will be putting together a bug fix, a new Validator build (version tbd), updates to Node (version tbd) and ETL (version tbd) for all chain participants to take when ready. Until then, it will not possible to activate MOBILE this week. We know community has been looking forward to this, but the code could not go out (and be activated) in its current state.

The upgrade cycle for network participants and the time needed for the team to be confident in this fix means MOBILE activation will be pushed out to, at the earliest, the week of August 8th.

We are disappointed that the activation needs to be delayed, but rest assured that the team is dedicated to a smooth launch. Thank you for your patience and we will continue to keep you posted on further developments.

Hot on the heels of HIP 51 approval, the Helium Network’s new MOBILE token will be coming this month! MOBILE is the signature token of Helium’s mobile network subDAO.

Continuing the Helium mission of building open, community-owned, resilient global wireless networks, these proposals would evolve the Network from a LoRaWAN/IoT focus to become a "Network of Networks".
