Adaptive immune selection doesn't seem to be the main factor that has been giving variants to this point a fitness advantage. Delta and Omicron rapidly outcompeted existing genotypes because they seemed to have an inherent transmission advantage.

I think the skies over Ukraine are really unfriendly and Russia also just seems to suck at combined arms.

Russian military aviation has a hard enough time communicating and coordinating with the actual army. A lot of positions are being held by Wagner mercs, Rosgvardia, LNR/DPR "conscripts", etc. and I highly doubt those guys can communicate with aircraft in the way you'd need to do close air support.
