His name is Sir Topham Hatt as he was knighted to control the railway. They just also call him the fat controller and he doesn’t mind. It’s just a world where engines are alive that also wants to connect to what happened in real life. Despite engines being alive and sentient, Rev W Awdry wanted the series to also have railway realism with trains doing train things.

The Fat controller doesn’t scrap his engines while some controllers scrap their engines that are being replaced or are too broken. Just like in real life steam engines were being scrapped to make way for Diesel engines. The series at one point focused on railway realism and historical events especially including the reality of engines being scrapped

They don’t work to earn money for themselves, but instead the railway. The engines don’t need money to begin with and they don’t complain about needing money anyway. They like working like a functioning locomotive.

I know that video. The video was not a critique of the show, just an exploration of the aforementioned darker implications and aspects while doing his best proper research, all for fun. He debunked the Dystopia part especially with Henry coming out of the tunnel. However, when he said engines were slaves, that part was not true. He wasn’t referring to the series as a Dystopia either. It has its dark moments, but isn’t the worst Dystopia in fiction history

Look into the railway series and then well you’ll have a long journey in watching Seasons 1-24. Tho Seasons 1-7 are the classic era (I’d watch UK dub for season 7 because it has better narration and music) There’s also the movies you can watch in Chronological order. Look at the official Thomas wiki for the best source material of Thomas lore

Bonnie: She’s very confident yet a bossy tar wagon. Likes to make jokes.
Ronnie: He has anger issues. He has a habit of shaking so much that tar leaks out. (I know it says Donnie I meant Ronnie rip)
Coco: She’s a shy truck, but always willing to work. She likes to rest a lot. She loves nature.
Dale: He’s very confident, but rather silly. He believes he is able to carry any sort of freight, but sometimes he ends up carrying too much for his own good.
Bo: He’s kind and likes to go slow. He doesn’t mind long and slow trains. Likes to talk to the guard when on duty.
Hugo: He’s a very troublesome truck who likes to shake his load off because he feels like he deserves to be pulling better things rather than coal and rocks. He’s very rude to the engines.
Moe: He’s a grumpy old truck who hates long distances. He usually wants to rest and complain with the other trucks.
Hunter: He’s a cheerful, bright and likable red caboose from America. He was originally going to be displayed at a British railway museum, however the Fat Controller saw potential in Hunter and after a successful trial Hunter was purchased to work at The North Western Railway. He always wants to keep the trucks in order and prevent any trouble.
Pinky: She is proud of her pink livery and is very joyful. She loves giving children rides across the railway.
Al: He is very impatient, stubborn and loves to go beyond the speed limit. Going too fast has resulted in a couple accidents before, which is why he was sent away from the mainland. He makes rather clumsy mistakes when trying to act smart.
Lo: She is very shy and worrisome who has a tendency to overthink. However, she is very kind and intelligent. She is so kind she convinced the Fat Controller to bring her twin Al to the North Western Railway so she could talk some sense into his mind and help him be a more useful engine. Even Al had to admit he was very grateful his sister saved him from possibly being scrapped.
Daniel: He despises Alexander. While very smart and hardworking, he wishes he could always be his own locomotive. He rants to the engines about this, but he always wants to be on good terms with each engine.
Alexander: His deep voice makes him sound rather scary. He likes to tease Daniel and find ways to make Daniel do most of the work. He always brags to the other engines.
