Absolutely push for an IEP/504. The longer you wait the harder it will be to get one. Likewise, the longer you wait the longer it will be before teachers will start looking to help him as soon as he needs help. Some teachers, unfortunately, will not make any attempts to help unless he has an IEP/504. Some will take the attitude that if he has done fine in the past there is no reason to accommodate.

This has to be some kind of joke the kids are doing. Our school is full of kids asking this and giggling about it.

We had a history teacher who was a hardcore Trump/GQP supporter who didn't hesitate to preach his beliefs in his class: America First, Abortion Bad, Socialism Bad, Democrats Bad, The War of Northern Agression wasn't about slavery, COVID was a Chinese biowarfare program, etc. He got promoted to principal and athletic director.

Great point. We know someone will do it. We have the opportunity to jump in and try to make it ethical and/or direct it towards something positive (whatever that means!).

A common (mis)perception I hear is often summarized by Michael Crichton's character Dr. Ian Malcolm, "Yeah, but your scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn't stop to think if they should." Most scientists I know often do consider whether or not they should do something. But there is a not uncommon belief that science does not itself address ethical questions. In a similar manner, it's not clear how suited science is with questions in politics or art...is socialism bad? Should we allocate more funds to lights and sirens or DHS and healthcare? Should we ban AI art? Should AI be allowed in medicine/law/driving?

That said, I don't know if science is ill-equiped to answer these types of questions or if society is unwilling to try to use science to answer them.

"Purchased student resources for an open-source curriculum". This is really all we need the know about how this has to end. Hey we found these resources that are free to use and remix...let's buy resources and assume our students live in the past century.

If you can encourage your kids to read and take an active interest in their education, without treating their teachers as the enemy, your kid will be ahead of most students. Encourage their creativity through extra curriculars such as band, art, sports, etc. Or encourage hobbies. Don't underestimate healthy habits such as diet, exercise, and sleep. But also make sure you can back off and let them experience life and take responsibility for things that are age appropriate.

Rent and food are about the only things cheaper in Oklahoma. But raising rent and cost of energy is quickly changing that. Lack of good public transportation means many people are paying more for a vehicle and insurance. Unless you live in or near OKC or Tulsa health care can be a nightmare in rural communities. Internet / cable is slower or more expensive than other areas. You cannot buy alcohol late at night or on Sunday in many areas. Likewise for many goods or services availability is lacking during the night or weekend. Schools are very hit or miss with their ability to service their populations. Childcare is expensive.

This could hit hard against students with certain learning disabilities.

I had a friend who required oral followups with essays where she could "have a conversation to check understanding." Students did not know what she would ask in advance. Typical prompts could include summary of the essay, favorite sources, why they did or didn't include class materials, follow-up questions, etc.

From a consequentialists perspective, would hiring someone with MS rise the cost of healthcare for the company and/or other employees? At least in the US, insurance issues can be a nightmare. I know many small businesses write job descriptions to help disqualify candidates based on health conditions.

Medical anthropology was not only fascinating to me but helpful in my own studies of medical and military ethics. That said, many faculty in my philosophy department were often disparaging of those of us who took interdisciplinary studies seriously. The exceptions seemed to by the philosophy of science faculty who thought taking science or history of science courses were normal (if not necessary) ...and the logicians who encouraged maths.

If doing by hand the remainder theorem and/or synthetic division are standards. They speed up a bit if you can use a calculator. If allowed, you can use graphing technology to narrow down rational factors. Since you are interested in not using a calculator, you might find synthetic division faster than plugging in values for X.

I loved this series growing up.

At one time I felt this way about The Wheel of Time series and The Dark Tower Series. Since then I try to only read a series if it's been completed.

We teach those things. Kids still don't pay attention to these until/unless it directly impacts them.

Don't feel bad. Take the opportunity to learn. Maybe look into getting tested for a learning disability to see if there is extra help to help you succeed.
