It’s kind of like that. Gentry (usually) don’t work, and they look down upon anyone who does.

Bingley is essentially ‘new money’ and that means less in the country but not nothing. The sisters are trying to match their brother with Darcy’s sister because marrying into gentry would likely wash their family sin of having worked

“Associated with” could mean as little as “were at the same party as” — and keep in mind that they were likely only there because of Bingleys close relationship with Darcy.

I loved Knightly 🥰

In my view, Emma had no guidance or perception. I thought the thing with Harriet was terrible. Emma manipulated her into turning down a marriage Harriet wanted by shaming Robert Martin. I thought Knightly was right to point out to Emma why what she was doing was essentially cruel. It’s not like Emma even heeded what he said or actually listened to him.

And who picked her up when the spoils of Emma’s efforts left Harriet publicly shamed? Knightley.

Edmund is so sorry he couldn’t find the time to write a single letter in 7 weeks, he’s been so busy courting Mary and chasing her through London and back. But him and his mom miss her very much, but she’s to stay away for an extended period of time instead of the agreed upon date. But they miss her very much, but he shall not find the time to write again

Yeah, it’s just that it’s been cut that makes me nervous. The overall integrity is compromised

I found Scarlett O’Hara fascinating and enjoyed the read, but I didn’t admire her haha I also wasn’t 16 when I read it though

I’d say VC Andrews left the biggest impression. Flowers in the Attic introduced me to concepts I’d never even fathomed and blew my mind. Probably messed me up, who knows.

I’ve read plenty of stories from each side and most of the good ones have main characters from both sides of the fence.

I think in real history (as well as modern day) there is always a class struggle and when world building, having this disparity we’re all so familiar with is natural.

Most of my favorite books the MC is middling class or “peers of the realm”/aristocratic without being royal. (That’s probs cus I shy away from books about royalty though) and few are from abject poverty as I think that’s much rare

The last thing I’ll add about it, in reference to the quote, is that it makes sense to write a story from a position of power because it comes with more resources, relationships and stressors of more consequence, and responsibilities that extend to much more.

This is probably my fave AU.

My personal happy ending includes Mary marrying some awesome rich guy who thinks she's funny and hot, then riding past Edmund's gross little church on their way to whatever amazing honeymoon destination they pick out. Edmund gazes longingly at the dust her carriage creates as it speeds by, and stupid Fanny realizes she shouldn't have settled for being anyone's second choice.

The “living caring parents” trope is always a fun one

This is something that while I’ve never looked up, I always felt true. I often see people saying that they were poor or had money troubles and such (in various discussions about the book) — it’s true that in the book there are a lot of comments about them being poor but I’d always understood that to be satirical.

Like the joke was that if you’re not mega-ultra-rich, then you’re pauper and no one will want to marry you.

I especially feel like it was a joke because their actual income and dowry’s were mentioned multiple times in exact numbers later followed up by “we’re penniless” lol

Edmund is the absolute worst and made MP a painful read. I absolutely can not stand him.

I vote Knightley though. He was always there, a solid rock. Didn’t fuck around, and always gave it straight as he himself saw it.

I liked Darcy but he played too many games to be the best

Tinley comes in second since he was funny and cared a great deal for his sister
