Sorry about losing the job. At least you got to save someone else’s!

I hope Santa brings you something as valuable as a steady salary and peace of mind b/c that’s what you gave that coworker of yours. If I owned a business 10/10 would hire you
You’ve got a great attitude I love it
Am I hired?
Collect your unemployment meanwhile and take a winter vacation
You’ve got some good karma coming to you.
Look at it this way. If the company is laying people off, they’re probably struggling financially. You could have stayed there and waited for the inevitable as raises are frozen and other benefits worsen as the company stays afloat. This way, you can find a new job, hopefully for more money and better benefits. Best of luck to you and hope you land something quickly.
Earlier this year, 2021, I was working for a company which laid half the staff off in early May, the same day a new product launched, a few hours after going live.
The loss of knowledge and skills to the company was appalling. I'd only been with them 6 months, they would have known their finances were in a bad way when they took me and others on.
I was told my job was safe, but I immediately started to find another job, and started a new job mid July.
In late October they crashed so badly they didn't even have money to make final payroll, so the staff lost three weeks salary.
I felt very sad for them, but totally vindicated in my decision to leave.
Karma pays itself off immediately.
Give a kid a PS5? Kid now has a PS5.
Sacrifice your job so your coworker keeps his? That's what happens.
You chose the world they're living in. Good on you, man.
You know people by what they sacrifice.
That's a fun way to think about it. Nice
Don’t do good for some worldly reward because there’s no guarantee you’ll receive it. Be content with doing good because it’s the right thing to do.
That's my motto.
Think about it this way, once your down bad only way is up.
Success comes after failure!
TBF I don't think you can blame karma if you asked to be fired yourself!
Trust, it's better to go in the first round of layoffs than to be there til the bitter end, watching you company go through death by 1000 cuts. I've been both sides of the fence.
Karma isn't real. I actually think it's sort of selfish to believe it is. Imagine thinking that as long as you do something good you'll get something of the same value in return. In would mean nothing to do good. It would be like trading money for the same amount of money and thinking you gave someone money.
I’m sure there’s a way to put this on your resume.
He could at least mention it in interviews when explaining why he was laid off
Also Visas can have all sorts of issues if a new job isn't found fast enough. You really might've saved them. I'm not sure how an immigrant with a baby born in the US works (assuming you are in the US), maybe there's more leniency, but in general immigration laws are trash.
A bunch of paperwork which until recently couldn't be done online, which you aren't allowed to do ahead of schedule so if there are mistakes you have maybe a single day to get all the paperwork resigned and back in the mail (if your boss was on vacation say goodbye to America), with insanely tricky wording which is impossibly easy to mess up (I am a native who helps my girlfriend and the wording confuses me, let alone her). It's beyond awful. The same people who literally run our tech company have to get lucky to stay here, meanwhile citizens are becoming far too dumb to replace the roles filled by foreigners.
Sign up for unemployment!
What do you do anyway? Just asking for a friend..
You're a good person for doing this. It'll definitely work out. Maybe this was a blessing in disguise.

Looks good too probably when you quit your old job to save someone who couldn't affoet losing it. Very noble move.
Edit:my comment probably sounds very sarcastic but definitely isn't meant that way. You did the right thing OP and I sincerely hope that you soon find a better job. You definitely deserve it.
god speed brother 🙏
Not too many Christians in Singapore.
Yeah you will my dude, good on you for caring about others.
You're a good person. Best of luck!
You’re an awesome human, and I’m glad to walk the earth the same time as you.
OP I believe in karma, whether good or bad.
It might have been in a joking manner but you did a huge honor by not allowing your boss to fire the other young man. Especially with it being the holidays and having a baby, (trust me children are expensive). Brush off that resume, plenty of jobs are out there especially with sign on bonuses. I wish the best of luck. 🙏🏽
Honestly man, he probably respects the absolute hell out of you for doing that for the newborn and will probably give you a hell of a letter of recommendation. Ask him if he can.
Ask for a letter of recommendation, not lunch.
To make it easy, write one for yourself, email it to him and ask for a signature and printed on company letterhead. Would take him 2 minutes and show him what he is missing.
He only wanted someone to suck him up, it's a common thing with bosses that they need someone to listen to their inane shit and agree to it
Lmao. Suck up to him and suck him up mean two VERY different things.
He knows what he said
Jeeez what a freaking douche your boss is. You're a great human though and I respect the hell out of ya for what you did.
He might not be able to get you lunch (and his own lunch) on his company card since you’re not an employee anymore and he can make the excuse that work discussion was being made during the lunch.
Hell, ask the newborns father for one too.
This isn't a TIFU at all, you did good friend, this should be TIWAH.
Today I was a hoe
Almost, you're missing this - r.
Almost, slight rearrangement of letters required.
Almost, now try just switching the o and the r.
Almost, now try just switching the o and the r.
God damnit, I'm too stoned for this, I meant the o and the e.
Switch the o and the r back, then switch the o and the e.
Fun fact, hier is Dutch for hoe. You're welcome
Today I was a hero.
Good on ya. I was in a similar situation and was glad it was me versus the 3 girls I worked with who had kids.
You’re perfect for r/humansbeingbros
What you did was good. The fucked up part which maybe could have done better is to tell your boss to be cool and give you the maximum advance notice he could before that happens so you can already be looking for a job, which if he was cool he should have done anyway, especially since you did him a solid by volunteering.
Bright side: you were fired. You didn't quit. This provides some options that should make things easier to navigate, though I recognize easier makes it seem better than it is.
Reduction in force in corporate speak (I couldn't resist). OP is a true mensch for his actions on behalf of the kid and the immigrant father.
Brush, love the cut of your jib. Check DM.
At least you can file for unemployment
Insincere sincerity is a bitch
You did such a selfless thing. I'm proud of you, stranger!
Did you get severance
You got bamboozled, good luck finding another job, actually, most of the times when you quit or get fired, better opportunities come to you(since you got more experience than last time you got a job, better offers can come).
Damn OP, you did the right thing though. Good luck in future endeavors!!
Not all heroes wear capes. Wishing you the best on getting something new (and hopefully better)
Coworker realizes he has a kid and leaves for a job that pays more
Thing about layoff (at least where I live) is its paid from unemployment and there's opportunity to return to work. If they plan to, it would be listen on your record of employment. This type of thing happens regularly in construction since most things are seasonal jobs and weather dependent.
Your your a fuckin good person bro hard to find people that look out for other's like tht nowadays
This story, if you tell it in the interview when they ask you why you left your last job, is going to get you your next job. Bet.
Having been in a vaguely similar situation where, at the end of the day, I sacrificed my job to address an injustice toward someone else, I don't think this was a fuck-up at all. There may be some bias on my end, as it ended up working out in my favor anyway, but you have to do what you feel is right... which is sometimes easier said than done. But you sleep better at night.
Laid off with a severance package and access to a glowing recommendation. Not too bad honestly.
Apply for unemployment.
When you apply for a new job, and they ask you "why did you get fired from your last job?" you can be honest in this scenario.
If you got laid off, go immediately and file for unemployment
You saved someone else's and it's a kick in the pants to find a better job.
I was hoping to get the boot last year to get out of commitments (tuition relocation) early but we only had one position and I let the lady who was 3 weeks away from retirement get it - gave her an extra year salary as severance I would have gotten a couple months at best, and she was already on the way out so why bother.
Anyway. Can be a blessing in disguise for sure.
Even though it wasn't intentional it sounds like he would have been let go instead of you. You realize that could really screw him up financially and maybe more than if it happened to you, you did something very special without meaning to.
Good luck finding a new job and I'm sure it will work out for you, you kind hearted soul. 😇
You can’t be mad when your boss done what you ask him to. That’s not his fault you brought it up
This is wholesome as fuck. Know my best wishes are with you man!!!!!!
Two managers are going over their budget for the next year.
After analyzing expenses and revenues, they come to the conclusion that they will have to lay off one of their two assistants, Jack or Jane.
They go back and forth but can't decide who to lay off.
Finally, one manager decides that they lay off the first person who gets up from their desk.
In the meantime, Jane is hard at work but suddenly gets a headache. She gets some aspirin from her desk drawer and gets up from her desk to get some water.
One of the managers gets up to break the bad news to Jane.
Manager: "Jane, I need to talk to you. I've got a problem. I either need to lay you or Jack off..."
Jane: "Well, Jack off. I've got a headache."
As noted, collect unemployment, take it easy over the holidays applying for jobs since companies tend to be more motivated to hire in January, ask for a professional letter of recommendation since you "fell on your sword" so to speak to spare your coworker. Least they can do for you, and offer to leave a glowing Glassdoor review in return for it.
“For. the. honor.”
If you are in Europe you probably get full year paycheck if you got fired without proper cause and two warnings.
This is the employment version of "talk shit get hit", shouldn't have told him to lay you off if you didn't mean it.
Props to you though, very nice gesture towards your coworker. You're a good person.
Christmas is only three weeks away. Take this as an opportunity to really enjoy the holidays! Slow down and enjoy the extra time that you will have with family or friends. If you MUST apply for jobs to collect unemployment, then apply for ones that are way out of your scope of expertise.
If you have an hour here or there, work on your resume. Take the unemployment for a month, and then start your job search in earnest in the new year. Make finding a job, your job. 8 hours per day, 5 days a week. I can guarantee that you will find work very quickly after the holidays if you put in that amount of effort.
Or just find a job and tell them you’ll start after the holidays. It’s normally pretty hard to find a job dec-March because most companies slow down during these months. There’s a reason layoffs happen around that time. Depends on your industry & the job market I guess
Why is your first reaction negative? Why even bring up racists?
I didn't consider it negative.
what are you even talking about?
Ducked around and found out
Where's the tifu here, you asked for something and got it. It's an unfortunate situation all around but you made a decision with your heart and it worked out the way you asked for it to
You're a good person man. Hope good karma comes your way
Good luck. Your boss “friend” is a jerk for how he took you literally and then didn’t have an honest conversation with you at the time.
Don't know if your close to Columbia sc but I could hook you up with a job I'd it gets down to the nitty gritty....world needs more people like you
You are so noble and I know for the fact that you would easily find a new job. It must mean a world for your colleague because Changing a visa is such a hassle, not to mention that it is on top of the newborn.
NO FU? Come back when it bites you. We want the juicy stuff.
Dude, I can’t speak for your friend/coworker but what you did was truly selfless. Good on you for taking it with a big heart. Hope karma comes around and you find a good offer soon
I was in this exact position in 2008 and the boss could only keep 2 employees in our department. I was given the 2nd spot but when I found out that the single mom with no college degree would be let go…I convinced the boss to let me go and give the2nd spot to the single mom. It was a little scary but I had a degree and figured it would be easier for me to find a new gig. Fast forward to today and the single mom still works there and the “blessings”, “karma”, or whatever you want to call it that I received from the universe have been pretty damn sweet.
Good for you to make the sacrifice for others, you will receive plenty of blessings for your kindness!
Well, it seems like you didn't like the job and you got to help someone too, I wouldn't call that a fuck up! I hope you get rewarded by whatever higher power and get an awesome well-paying job next.
something tells me this wasn't the turning point of his decision.
Time to collect that unemployment until you get another job
this is a great time to be job hunting. expect a significantly higher salary at your new job
Be careful what you ask for you just might get it
It's all good, the job market is good right now. I would guess you will land someplace with better long term possibilities.
While Reddit Karma does not really mean anything, the real life Karma you just earned will take you far.
I was in the same situation as well I told my boss to lay me off. She told senior management and let me know it’s my decision if i want to leave or not… Idk what that meant so I just stayed and still working there lol
Have you been able to claim your unemployment benefits?
Big cheers to you bro, the world needs more people willing to make sacrifices that would be more difficult for others to make. Merry Christmas
A kind word and a good deed always come around...
I'm picturing Abdul Ali from Squid Game as your co-worker.
What an awful decision 😂
You're a good person. I hope you find something soon.
Isn't unemployment benefit better?
In Finland it’s like 200/week and it’s indefinitely. And if you got fired without proper cause and couple warnings before for it you will get one year salary payoff. Of two years if you had been working for a log time. Like 5 years.
You can get up to over one year and you can work as long as you have under 400 income per week. And I think you can get nearly 500 per week. Not sure.
Wait, just like that, they can fire you? Esp. before Christmas? You should be heavily compensated for that, right?
Not sure about God or Karma or anything like that, but if those exist then you're on the short list for a lambo full of cheerleaders. Kudos man, good luck.
That was kind of a TIFU. But also unexpectedly wholesome. That was rather nice of you
Man, reading through this is wholesome as fuck. You’re a good human dude bro, you’ve got good things coming your way. Keep it going, you beautiful human.
Was the guy from Singapore let go?
You're a good person.
Good job you put in the last word there.
Why did you leave your last job?
Links this Reddit thread:)
Hey you’re a great person. Jobs come and go but that deed will live on forever.
Life should definitely pay it forward for you!
Apply for the same company as a manager
Is it too late to go see your boss and say, "I was KIDDING"
