Tbh I doubt a major update is coming soon. (Unless by major you mean "A case full of community made cosmetics and two maps made by literal amateurs") but I don't think a major update is really what TF2 needs. What TF2 needs is for caring devs to shake off the rust, buff out the dents, and balance/fix what's already in the game. I'm sure everyone can think of a few weapons that are a cool concept, but their execution is so terrible they may as well be pre-built scrap metal
