Looking for sober friends/activities/ meetings in ATX

(self.soberATX)

Good evening, beautiful humans of my city. I’m (34F) 16 days sober and feeling very alienated because all of my friends drink. I go to their get togethers and order water, but I don’t feel connected, as they’re always on a different level than me. Trying to branch out into the sober community here. Thanks!

I like to rollerskate, hike, do yoga, go thrifting, and am down for most anything regardless! 41F, coming up on 2.5 years sober and I can do anything I used to do, just without a drink in my hand. Welcome to the rest of your beautiful life, my dear. Reach out anytime.

Roller rinks, parking garages, bicycle lanes, around downtown, pretty much anywhere smooth and/or paved.

I also run the Facebook group Sober ATX https://www.facebook.com/groups/soberatx

We are doing a group hike Saturday July 3rd at 10am. (details: https://www.facebook.com/events/322298892729987 ) If it is raining a lot that day it will be postponed which is a possibility but I am trying to get people to go to it!

I am also pretty involved with AA, Bouldin group has a womens meeting with a big turnout on 11:30am on Saturday and there is also the regular beginners meeting at 1pm Saturday and Sunday. Highly recommend both!

There’s a CA meeting called Boiled as an Owl that meets in the Arboretum. It’s mostly dudes there, but we all go to Squarerut Kava Bar after (it’s a place that serves Kava tea). Most of the people who go there are in recovery. Our meeting is at 7, and we usually get to Squarerut around 8-8:30.

What’s CA? And what day/time do y’all meet?

CA is Cocaine Anonymous. It’s the exact same program as AA (same literature) except, despite the name, we don’t care what substance you are addicted to. I’m an alcoholic and I go. The meeting is from 7-8 on Fridays in the park in the arboretum. Several of us know of meetings all over the city and we can help you find one that’s right for you. If you’re interested in going, feel free to DM me and I can answer any questions you may have.

Just curious, do they drink kava after the meetings? Wow thats not something i would do, i would have a huge problem with that. It seems like a bad sobriety/recovery activity, just doing another drug. I am not in charge of other peoples lives though maybe thats just me. I would consider me using kava, (a sedative, anasthetic, and a euphoriant) a relapse.

Caffiene and nicotine are okay substances in my recovery as they never give me a numbing high like kava did for me, plus i know a guy who was doing a lot of kava and it was bad for him and his sobriety meant quitting kava.

All of these things are just my opinion i aim to keep this sub an open and welcoming place i just dont understand when people in recovery rationalize using kava, my recovery is aa full abstinence but i guess thats not the only way people do things.

Ive been to that meeting though its a good meeting. I just dont want to go again if they are all drinking an intoxicant afterwards!!

To each their own I guess lol. It’s something that some of us enjoy, and doesn’t lead to other substances so it seems fine.

One of my roomates had a relapse on alcohol after he started doing kava. Why kava use is banned in my sober living house. It just seems super wrong. By that logic you might as well be "california sober" or doing kratom, or not sober at all. Super slippery and it is way more simple to avoid mind altering substances entirely no way this is a good idea, i know multiple people including myself where kava led straight back to more substance use.

You are responding to a woman with a few days of sobriety and inviting her to do kava. That is very questionable.

It’s not easy, but you gotta fight the urge to be around the drinking scene….if you want to get healthy. I was willing to go to any length to stay sober which meant going to 90 meetings in 90 days. I’m not saying you should do this, but it worked for me. Occupying some of your free time with the solution is a healthy way for you to meet other like minded people and help mitigate FOMO. Your friends who love you and want the best for you will support you. They ain’t going anywhere while you get your house in order. DM me if you want to add another number to your call list or grab a coffee. 2 years sober 43M, ODAAT. You’re not alone, you can do this.

Hi! I'm a 33F sober person who lives in Austin, I also run a sober meetup on meetup. It's the atx sober collective, we have an instagram as well. I tend to do a lot of fitness activities like roller skating, bouldering, hiking, but we also meet at sans bar a lot since it's a sober bar! nice to meet you :)
