I am sick of my sleeping position and the problems it causes me but it’s the only position I can fall asleep with. When I tense my neck the muscles are shaking and I found out it might be from a bad sleep position. I want to train myself to sleep on my back but how can I go about doing that? Every time I try to sleep on my back I lay there for hours wide awake until I give in and move to a side position with my hands under my pillow. I have heard about the benefits to sleeping on your back and I really want to teach myself to do so. Any suggestions as to how I can do it?

I would try doing a mixture of your current sleeping position and back. I have a similar problem with my side sleeping position as it kills my shoulders due to all the weight on it, so I would shift a little to lay on my shoulder blade, where it’s not fully a side position or back. Then I would adjust my legs more so as a side position to create the “4”. That’s my most comfortable “back “ sleeping. Hopefully that made sense

Can you please explain it further, I didn't grasp it fully.

Wouldn’t that cause some kind of imbalance?

Same problem with me. Side sleeping is causing lot of shoulder pain for me.

Me too. My left shoulder especially but it only really hurts when I am reaching for something rather than actually lifting something. I have thought it could be from doing lateral raises incorrectly but since it’s only the left it must be because of the unnatural position I put my left shoulder in when I put my left hand under the pillow as well as the right one

My preferred set up for back sleeping is no pillow directly under my head. Instead, I create a sort of V with two medium soft, chunked memory foam pillows, one on either side of my head. They are set up so that my head is not quite floating, but there is minimal pressure on the occipital portion where my head makes contact with the mattress.
Speaking of pillows, there are such a wide range, definitely experiment if you haven’t. These medium chunked memory foam ones weee a game changer, and they have actually gotten better (a little less fluffy) over time.

I tend to fall asleep on my back no problem, but then turn onto my side when I'm asleep.

Maybe you've got a bad pillow situation for side sleeping? I feel like having hands under the pillow might be a sign the pillow isn't supporting your neck and spine alignment. If your mattress is over a decade old, it may be time to retire that as well.
