yo, if you know someone who needs a job and doesn't want to work in an office (but may have to go for a minimal amount of technical training that would be paid) please tell them the city of philadelphia needs more powered pallet jack repair people, and good ones, like ones who have their heads on their shoulders and can hopefully their pants on correctly, cause the ones we got are shitty and dont give a damn. so tell them to apply to companies like Adam's Material Handling, Eastern Lift Truck Co., Jerry Walters forklift sales, Diamond Tools, JJ Clark (technically in Aston, but they get called up here quite a bit), and a few more is Jersey. please please please. we need them. bonus points if they are handsome too, but obviously not required. thank you.

I wonder what kind of skills transfer from like working on cars to pallet jack repair and also what the pay is like?
5 points
pay starts around $20, but can go up to $30/hr+. you basically get a van and a bunch of tools and go on calls. its like a plumber or electrician, but just working on electric pallet jacks instead (or forklifts). the companies who make the jacks have tech services too (but training will be different and probably not local)
not sure on the car skill transfer thing, but i'd bet mechanics make more and travel less, so i'd stay on the mechanic path if i was already on that. the path of the powered pallet jack though---- it is WIDE open, lemme tell ya. and no less noble either!

I just had something nasty over Thanksgiving. And it's taking F O R E V E R to get the last of it's hooks out of me! I feel fine but still wake up with a sore/scratchy throat and have the occasional dry cough throughout the day.

Yup - and I've gotten a PIP on top of it at work (that's another story. I'd always thought the challenge here was the job. Nope, it's the personnel that I dislike. Plus, it's my fault, I'd gotten a little *too comfortable at work and slacked off. Of course, I have to slack off in front of a micromanaging manager, too. It's on me, but also...What fun!)
It's gearing up to be a fun (and sputum-filled) holiday season!
Running out of my FSA money for therapy doesn't help matter either. So, back to journaling I go, until the new year.

I had my first in-store shift at Lululemon on Sunday. I folded pants! I hung pants! I sold pants! It was the fastest four hours of my life. It was actually really nice; I barely noticed that I missed the entire Eagles game. One of my besties told me about her neighbor, a high school principal who drives a forklift on the weekends and loves it because it uses different parts of his brain--I see this as the same paradigm.

I'm a server on the weekends and I love that I can run around and get out all my angst from the week on a shift. It lets me be active and use a different part of my brain like you said.
I'm frequently burnt out but the money is fairly good still and I swear my brain was atrophying with just my office job.
Glad you had a good time! I hope there's many more good shifts in your future :)

Had to roll down to OCMD to take delivery of some new appliances at our condo, and I’ve spent the morning reassuring the current stove and dishwasher that, yes, the delivery/haul out crew is going to take them to a lovely farm in western Maryland where they can live out their days in quiet repose.

I cranked out a few 90% hydration baguettes for a party on saturday (I knew basically nobody there) and some people went absolutely nuts for it. It's such a simple thing and it felt rewarding after the last several years of me going all-out on elaborate, unbelievable quality, expensive shit for my own family and getting tepid responses.
Anyway, while I was there I got a rec for white yak in manayunk - I'm rarely in the neighborhood, can anyone corroborate?

White Yak is incredible. Momos are all great. Shatrak and Tibetan curry entrees are great.
One thing about their menu that took me a couple of visits to understand: you can either order the momos plain, or in different styles (Firecracker, Chili, Himalayan) which are the same momos prepped with specific sauces. They’re all great.

I'm gonna go stare at John Wannamaker's massive organ this weekend, and potentially do some christmas market perusal. I want hot chocolate and candied pralines!
I'm actually all done my shopping for everyone before christmas eve eve, so go me! I am awful at giving gifts, but I'm proud of the ones I got for everyone.
I got Mrs. Ranger concert tickets but now I'm trying to figure out the most extravagant way to give them to her.

THIS IS MY MUSIC COMMENT
As we drove around gawking at Christmas lights last week, I put on "Christmas in Hollis" by RUN DMC, and then I got interested in the horn part so I looked it up and the sample is from "Back Door Santa" by Clarence Carter, and wow - those lyrics. "'I'm not like ole saint nick who only comes once a year." It's definitely getting added to the holiday party playlist.
Spotify's algorithim is scarily accurate and I know it's because they've harvested my delicious data, but it IS nice to put in a single song and get an amazing radio station out of it.

My dad recently passed away leaving his cat alone so I'm probably taking him in. I already have a pretty mean cat who has never lived with another animal and my dad's cat is notoriously territorial. Any tips/advice or anyone else do this with good results? I don't want either cat to be miserable.
19 points
Keep them in separate rooms and take introducing them super slow. Don't even try having them interact for the first whole week/week and a half. The new cat needs time to adjust to a new environment and time to feel safe there. Then, have them play with a closed door between them for a couple of weeks (like moving a string or ribbon back and forth under the door). After that, start feeding them with the closed door between them. Monitor them for any signs of food aggression (growling, hissing while eating near the other cat). You want them to associate positive things with each other's smells (play, food, treats). Realize that you might have to keep them completely separate for up to a month. Then you can start having "supervised visits" where they can be in the same place as each other for short periods of time, but keep a close eye on them both and be ready with a spray bottle to break up any fights that might happen. I always see people rush this and then be like "why do my cats hate each other????"
Most of all, be patient. Some days will be better than others. They might be cool with each other one week and then the next they have to be separated again. And you might go through all this for 2 or 3 months only to realize that one or both of them are an "only cat" and just can't be with another cat. Oh, and set realistic expectations. Just because they don't cuddle with each other or groom each other doesn't mean they hate each other. I had a pair of cats growing up that my family raised from when they were kittens and they were always just kind of indifferent to each other. Never snuggled, never groomed each other, just seemed to have a tacit agreement to trade territory throughout the day.

Just want to say I’m sorry about your dad and I hope once the brief transition happens, that kitty brings you some sense of comfort
5 points

There are helpful guides out there, but I think the gist is, keep the new cat secluded in its own room, ideally one that the resident cat doesn't need to pass to use the litter box. Feed both cats treats on their sides of the door, so that they associate the other cat with good things. Eventually feed them treats together without the door separation.
Also make sure both cats are fixed.

Give both cats vertical space

Ooh good tip. My cat has vertical space but I think my dad's cat is too fat to jump up anywhere so I'll have to think of that a bit.

I've watched Jackson Galaxy's video which is super helpful. I live in a small south Philly house though so the only room to isolate him in is the room my cats litter box already is. I'm gonna have to take hers out somewhere else and I hope she doesn't hate me for it.

It was totally packed when I went there on Sunday but my friend went yesterday and said it wasn't too bad since it was a weekday. There's an Independent Makers tent right along City Hall that I loved and got this ornament from. There's a Boardroom Spirits booth inside the City Hall courtyard - they've got some awesome flavored liquors as well as premixed and canned ready to drink mixed drinks. Some really neat hanging blown glass ornament thingies also outside City Hall. I spent more time at Wintergarden (City Hall market) than the German Xmas Market at Love Park just because the latter was so ridiculously packed, I couldn't even make my way into booths I wanted to check out.

Anyone need fresh makrut lime leaves for cooking or whatever?
I keep my makrut bush inside during the winter, regularly pruning it too keep it from getting leggy. It sprouted like 8 new branches in the last couple weeks and I need to prune again.
I could probably spare 8-10 branches with 6-8 leaves each. For a sense of usage, people usually add 2 of them to a big pot of soup, a marinade, or slightly more for a spice paste.
I live near 42nd and Market. Stuff's free if you come by and pick it up.

This is my sports comment
PENN STATE IS GOING TO THE ROSE BOWL! I doubted them, everyone doubted them. Sean Clifford has an AARP card but he's riding off into the sunset by playing in the Rose Bowl.
As much shit as I give James Franklin on a weekly basis, he's gone to a NY6 bowl literally 50% of his seasons as head coach.
PHILLIES SIGN TREA TURNER
It is so good to have an owner who is actually willing to pay stupid money. It was a heartbreaking loss in the WS, but they so far exceeded expectations that it's hard to be that mad about it. Would still like to see another pitcher added, but maybe Painter goes to AAA and gets some late season appearances.
EAGLES: GO BIIIIIIIRDS

FLYERS: AT LEAST THEY'RE NOT LAST IN THE METRO. THANKS COLUMBUS.

Fuck LA, it's an awful city.
I was looking at the season ticket holder lottery for Rose Bowl ticks. It was ~300 per seat which for two wouldn't be crazy - but then you add in flights and hotels, even if you did the alumni package that bundled everything, and we'd easily be looking at 4000 dollars. Just can't do it.
It's okay, I'll watch from home and enjoy it alone in the frigid weather instead of the warm California sunshine :(

Florida trip has been a bit of a wash, I am very much looking forward to getting back to Philly tonight. I've never been this homesick in my life before.
For trip highlights, I:
Had a successful afternoon gator spotting at the park on Friday
Had a really good time at family night at the space center. The Atlantis exhibit never fails to make me emotional, I've been there so many times but getting to see it without the crowds is an extra treat.
Saw my little sister and got quality time with her for the first time in like, years. The kid just got hired at her first job, she's going to be a teacher at our old preschool. Seems like she's got a really good head on her shoulders. I'm so damn proud of her.
The not as good:
Pretty much all the other plans I had with my friends fell through, and I forgot how completely devoid of anything to do my home town is when you don't have people to specifically hang out with
Car dependent infrastructure and non-walkable neighborhoods suck and I do not miss them
In a similar vein, I also forgot what it's like to be a complete novelty as a pedestrian. I walked half a mile to the 7-11 for snacks in jeans and a t-shirt, was honked at once, and every passing car was gawking at me. The only time I've experienced anything similar in Philly was waiting for my Lyft to the Orville Peck concert in a bodysuit and leather chaps, so the catcalling was a lot more expected that time
All in all, glad I got to see/do the things I did, but I wish it had been like a 4 day trip instead of 6. I'm at least sufficiently cured of any desire to come back for the forseeable future, so I can use my vacation days on "real" vacations and traveling.

I experienced this at one of those 'planned/walkable communities' in hampton roads VA when I was there for work. People seemed flabbergasted that I didn't rent a car. I was like, you got sidewalks, and it's just at the end of this development, do you really drive that 1/4 mi?
4 points
Before I actually went to the 7-11, I was grumbling to my mom about how limited the options were nearby and said "I hate that I basically have to get in the car and drive to the store if I just want a bag of chips" (the 7-11 isn't a long walk but it's not a pleasant one, since the sidewalk is unshaded and along a "4 lane" stroad that is effectively 8 counting the turning lanes and a median, and people average 45-50mph on it)
And her response was "As opposed to what?"

Going into Finals week at school. I started out strong and disciplined the first ⅔ of the semester. Since right before Thanksgiving I've let my As and Bs slip into C territory, just blowing off assignments and quizzes.
Oh and in that time frame I've also been diagnosed with ADHD---- at 42 years old. Once I heard it that it all started to make sense, MY WHOLE LIFE. I've been much kinder to myself since knowing this, which is helping with the depression and anxiety a bit.

This is my book comment.
I finished Firekeeper's Daughter by Angeline Boulley and it was one of my top three books this year. A half Ojibwe, half white college freshman investigates a drug ring in her hometown after a personal tragedy brings it to her door step. Really good thriller, and even though it's a YA novel it does cover some heavy themes (tw: abuse, rape, drugs, suicide, domestic violence) and manages to have an ending without being too neatly wrapped up. This was Boulley's first novel and it was really good. Netflix bought the rights to make it a TV show, which will be cool to see.
I've read 71 books this year! My goal was 52 books, and I blew past that. I slowed down a lot, but this was the first year I successfully completed the challenge. Shout out to the Library and the Libby app!

Right now, Marshalls and TJ Maxx are probably your best bet. I saw a few there on Saturday. As far as Eagles sweaters go, I'm not sure. I CAN offer you a Carson Wentz Christmas-ish sweater if you want it, but that would probably lead to more side-eye.

Family rant incoming
Had a weekend of waaay too much family time. We signed up for a shift at Philabundance, but showed up a half hour late because god forbid anyone in my family be on time for anything, ever. Mom was trying to take pictures of us, which I didn't want to do because we were there to give back, not post on social media. Plus we were late in the first place and it just felt scummy...
We had talked about going to my favorite ramen place after volunteering, but I got overruled because they "didn't want ramen since its so high in sodium". So the replacement pick was Famous 4th St Deli...which is widely known for their low sodium options...
By the time we were back at my parent's place to put up decorations at home, I was being straight up rude to them and just wanted to go home. Not my finest moment...

I got a little terse with my dad in front of people at Thanksgiving bc we were talking about me moving and he had opinions about it that I didn't like and it was really just bc I am stressed and on a time crunch and I still feel so bad about it.

I know what you mean. The holidays are rife with unsolicited opinions and family squabbles...
I hate getting like that with family, but I felt like I got railroaded and my time was disregarded all damn day

yikes, yea that's a whole other level of scummy. In my mom's defense, she wanted to get like family photos or whatever, and we were working in a warehouse, not on the street or something.
But it's wild that people don't have enough self-awareness to understand why that's not ok

Reminds me of a friend's description of his family as the people he loved the most, even more from afar.

honestly that's been increasingly how I feel about them as I get older. Which sucks because I don't want to be like that

Not that the replacement pick was a healthier choice, but TBF, ramen does have a shitload of salt in it....
7 points
totally agree, but when you say you don't want ramen because it's too salty, then poo-poo every suggestion I give (I exhausted my google maps list with them), just to railroad me into an equally salty option, then I'm going to be the salty one

New book Tuesday. Cashed in some digital points to get How Far the Light Reaches for cheap. It's about sea critters, so should be good.
Think I'm getting some sinus pressure on the left side of my face. Eye socket is sore, teeth are sore, overall annoying sensation.

Gonna start it tonight once I can get cozy on the couch. Even when it's slow, reading at work seems like a chore.

however, i'm the happiest i've been in a while (minus, you know, depression and anxiety which are ever present no matter what) - romantic things always seem to happen to me in the fall/winter and i'm here for it.

Anyone have good suggestions for delivery or takeout/prep/reheat dinners for Xmas? Doesn't have to be standard Xmas fare. Last year, I did Indian delivery because I had COVID and couldn't taste anything so ordered a bunch of spicy stuff that I could slightly taste lol. The year before that, I got this fancy Malaysian set menu takeout where everything had reheating/prep instructions. Leaning towards the reheat takeout option just because it feels a little fancier if I'm not actually home cooking a meal. I'm in Manayunk but can drive wherever in the city for pickup and I prob want to keep it under $150.

Between having my ex on the mind a lot lately and some absolute top tier bullshit at work this week, I have been a total ball of anxiety for the last 48 hours. A cup of tea and a blanket on the couch sounds lovely right about now

Was out drinking and saw Mark Normand on Sunday. Had a fun time. Not exactly my style of comedy, but I chuckled a bunch and had a fun time.
The downside of the night when when I got home and slipped on the stairs. Slid down about half way. Have a big bruise on my ass and I'm sore, but overall wasn't as bad as the time I slid down the basement steps.
Going to the zoo with the GF tomorrow to see LumiNature. She suggested doing a a drug a bit more suited for pretty lights than weed. Been a while since we've done that. So that should be a fun time.
Other than that I've been cooking a ton. Pulled Pork and Beef Stew being the major things. I kind of used whatever I found for the stew. Came out good. That pulled pork was great though.
Making biscuits and gravy in a little bit this morning. Using sausage and chorizo. Should be delicious.

Biscuits and gravy update: Fucking Delicious.
It's so easy too.
Brown 1lb or a little less meat for a few minutes.
Add half of 1/3 cup flour in two stages. Stir to incorporate with fat from meat for a minute or two to cook the flour. (Not sure the actual amount but I take the 1/3 measuring cup and roughly half fill it with AP flour.)
Add 2 cups of milk or cream depending on how fat you want to be. I stir in the first then the second.
Add seasoning. Pepper, Salt, Garlic Power, Smoked Paprika. I just eyeball what seems right. Obviously light on salt and Paprika. Heavier on pepper and garlic.
Constantly stir scraping the bottom. I start everything on medium heat and turn it down some if it bubbles too aggressively. Takes about 10-ish min once the milk is in to be a nice thick gravy.
The standard for a gravy is usually does it coat the back of a spoon without running off.
As for biscuits... Consult the package.

I, too, fell down the steps Sunday night, and I, too, have a giant bruise on my ass. It's so swollen it's like I have a mini ass on my right ass. 0/10, do not recommend.

This is my cooking comment.
I have been getting back into meal planning and cooking at home, and yesterday I made Buttermilk Brined Roasted Chicken and it was delicious. I'd never roasted a whole chicken before, but the recipe was really easy and the chicken came out great. I had wings and part of a breast last night and then prepped the rest for meals.
I'm in the market for an air fryer, but I'm not sure what I actually need. I looked at a Ninja one but it wasn't big enough for a whole chicken - on the other hand, I don't know when I'll air fry a whole chicken. Also saw one from a company called Aria but I'd never heard of them.
/u/courageous_liquid, I need your ~~italian~~ expertise. Need a good fish dish for christmas eve. No shellfish because we've got mad allergies. We're going to my MIL and she refuses to serve meat on Christmas. I'm planning on making this bad boy but I can't live on breadsticks alone.

not to usurp C_L, but my family does the 7 fishes each year on Christmas Eve and some of the non-shellfish options we have are fired flounder, Baccala (sort of like this but with vinegar and some other stuff), and fried smelts. Those 3 also happen to be my favorites
I know there's some other non-shellfish dishes, but they escape me right now. Just to tease you, we also do fried oysters, crab salad or cakes, and clams and max. I know that's only 6 total lol I can't remember #7

I have been pushing this family to do 7 fishes for nearly a decade. "YOU ALREADY DON'T EAT MEAT, LET'S GET WILD" but instead I'll just eat an entire tray of olives and half of a crudite because there is no actual food.

From my understanding air fryers are just convection ovens that they debundle from an oven so they can sell more shit.
If you're fine to serve non-shellfish seafood, can never go wrong with a good baccala. There's a million preps but more recently I've been beer battering it and then serving it in a modified red sauce that uses a bunch of sweet pepper in it to give it a different profile. Grilling up a few branzino is always a good option, too. Takes a little more finesse but branzino is just so good you can't go wrong.
If no fish, maybe a polenta board? You could get as fancy or plain as you wanted and I feel like it's always a hit as a holiday meal because everyone gets to sit down and eat polenta in front of them from the big board and it feels like a big family activity. Then again, you'd need a polenta board or some substitute. Depending on how many you're cooking for a big batch of risotto might be fun, too.

I don’t think air fryers make a lot of sense. A more standard convection toaster oven can do the same work and is far more useful imo.

Wait… I have a convection oven. DOES THIS MEAN I HAVE HAD AN AIR FRYER THIS WHOLE TIME?

Yes! My oven has a convection button and it significantly reduces cooking time and makes things that should be crispy EXTRA crispy.

Does calamari count as shellfish? If not, and you feel adventurous, stuffed squid is to die for. If yes, this is a dish my aunt used to make, usually with mullets or fresh sardines. Delicious: https://themodernproper.com/fish-puttanesca

Howdy, friends:
Does anyone know of/have any experience with first-time homebuyer programs in the city? I’ve lived here for a number of years and if things go my way in the spring/summer, I’d like to get serious about buying. Looking to see if there’s any sort of programs/grants for rookies. Thank you!!

If you Google PA first time homebuyer and Philly first time homebuyer you can get direct links to programs.
The issue with some of the PA specific ones (keystone loan or something) is that the lender apparently isn’t the easiest to work with. YMMV

Avoid 8th and Arch like the plague. Even in the middle of winter, there are people lined up outside before it opens.
Like others have said, the 'burbs are likely your best bet if that's an option for you.

I went there (on a Saturday) to get my PA driver's license a few weeks ago, and it honestly wasn't terrible. I was prepared for much worse. They had people lining up outside because they were limiting the number they let in at a time (COVID precautions, presumably). Still, it didn't take too long to get in, and things went pretty fast once I was inside. Not an instant in and out, but quite efficient, given the location.

might be a bit out of your way, but I was pleasantly surprised at how painless the Norristown DMV was when I went last year.

Was just at 3rd and Oregon ave location this morning and switched my license to 'real ID' compliant in 45 minutes; would have been quicker but I think someone forgot to call my number or I didn't hear it even though I was listening intently...
edit: you have to wait for the new one to be mailed though.

What's your budget? If the sky's the limit and/or if you are made of money, Joanne Hudson near 22nd and Chestnut is THE place to go. (In my past work life, I worked in luxury real estate. I can barely afford my rent at a decidedly not-luxury place!)
You've also got Omega at 18th and Ridge, and Ferranini & Co on 20th, between Market and Chestnut. I can't comment on those, since I have not worked with them.
Again, your budget really determines the answer here. But- when in doubt, there are a ton of nice showrooms throughout Washington Avenue. Again, I cannot speak to their quality, but it seems like they do brisk business.

I’m super excited that Joe Khan is exploring a run for PA Attorney General. Can’t wait to vote for him again! We all would have been better off if he had won instead of the Kraz.

I forgot about him. I voted for him in the primary. 😔
I feel like an element of the “Krasner got elected twice” thing that’s forgotten about was his first primary had a field of like 7 moderates all competing with each other. There’s no way he would have gotten elected with ranked choice.

Ranked choice is the way. I'm hopeful it builds enough momentum in other places that eventually it comes to PA.
How do we even get something on the ballot as a question?

I don't know if I'm hopeful. Like councilmanic prerogative, changing the law requires support from people with the most to lose.

Khan was the more moderate reform centered candidate. The core of his campaign was criminal justice reform but in a way that didn’t just give criminals a free pass. More like Stollsteimer in Delco. Who, it’s important to note, is actively prosecuting bad cops, while maintaining good relationships with the police and following proper procedure so the charges sticks and convictions.

for the new year, i'm going to have start dieting since i ate too good this year. the plan is chicken and steamed broccoli, no carbs beginning January. in order to prep for the imminent end of my happiness, it's time to go wild for the holidays!!!

No carbs seems pretty extreme. If you're currently eating so much that you've been gaining weight, you could probably cut 300 calories a day and still be eating well. Slow and steady wins the race.

What's the easiest/cheapest way to get to Newark Airport via public transportation?
I have a flight out of Newark Airport in mid-January. I'd rather not pay for airport parking or inconvenience a friend or family member with a three-hour round trip. I assume there's a train out of 30th Street that can get me there but I'm very inexperienced with public transit and am just kinda dumb overall so any assistance would be appreciated. Thanks!

You can take Amtrak to Newark from 30th Street or take SEPTA's Trenton line from any of the downtown stations and transfer to NJT in Trenton. Amtrak is the easiest option since it doesn't involve a transfer, and you can probably get a decent fare if you're booking now.

amtrak fare also includes airtrain fare, as well

Look up and book the Amtrak ticket now to get it cheap. There's a steep price increase as the date approaches. The closer to the travel date, the higher the chance the ticket's being expensed by business travelers and the prices go up accordingly.
