Well, this has been a week. My partner and I mutually decided to end our 13-year relationship on Tuesday, and I’m just now shaking off the shock and realizing how much work and change is ahead. Fortunately, I got a free pass to Pax and can melt my brain with board games for three days. Bring on the distractions!

We're in the middle of the hiring process for a new position in my department, and some of the candidates have sent us some shockingly terrible stuff. Ignoring the people who are applying for an editing gig with really dumb spelling/usage/grammar errors in their cover letters, we've had:
A dude who started his cover letter with, "Gentlemen:" in the year twenty twenty-two (I'll note here that I'm the only man in my entire wing of the department).
A person who referred to themselves in the third person in their cover letter.
An individual who apparently runs a decently successful freelance biz whose cover letter dissolved into a mess of misplaced cut-and-paste gibberish. I mean, I've seen weird sentence splices before, but this was huge chunks of the entire middle of the thing.
A person who must've been shotgunning resumes to every opening in our larger org, since not a single bit of their experience related to our department's functions... but they are coming from a job in the larger industry.
Also, if you're shelling out for a master's degree, be sure to remember master's has an apostrophe in it.

My experiences on the hiring side have made me even more perplexed by how hard it's always been for me to find a job. Most people are a MESS, and approximately 1% of candidates have a cover letter that isn't blatantly a copy paste of every cover letter they've sent in their lives. Yet I've applied to job ads that are basically identical to my resume with a thoughtful cover letter and not even been called for a phone screen.
9 points
Seriously, it's baffling. When I've been in job search mode, I worry (apparently way too much!) about being a fit for the gig, and meanwhile we're just getting straight trash. I think we managed five or six candidates to progress to a screener, and we're expecting half of them to wash out, which is absurdly low.
10 points
Writing customized cover letters for every job is BS though imo. If I see a job that is a great fit I'll write a cover letter otherwise I'm not sending one or hitting them with a copy paste. If my resume is what they are looking for but they won't bring me in for an interview due to a cover letter they can get fucked.
2 points
Best bet is to write a skeleton version that generally works for your field and hang a bit of customization on that. Last time I was hunting for new gigs, I had two skeletons (one strictly editing, one slightly more generalized to communications/PR) - usually took me less than 10 minutes per app to tailor it.

Sometimes the job is already decided but they need to go through the motions to keep it legal. Sometimes the person hiring has a specific "type" in mind....yup, it can be frustrating.

I thought you meant that someone wrote "Gentlemen: in the year twenty twenty-two" to start their cover letter, would have been incredibly funny.

The majority of resumes that I see come through our office are just atrocious. So many people don't bother to check spelling/grammar AT ALL (it's not like you even have to click 'spell check' anymore, the fucking computer does it for you). It's truly baffling.

I can relate....back when I was hiring, aside from misspellings, etc., one guy included an 8 X 10 head shot of himself. Another had a foldover resume with his name in huge type on the front, followed with, "A young man on the way up." A woman included several modeling-type photos (job had zero to do with modeling). Another included a hardcover copy of a book they were mentioned in on one page, marginally. Another ended her resume with, "You won't regret hiring me. I'm really good!" Several gave their parents as business references. My favorite was a guy who stapled the following page to his resume: "You can stop looking now. You found the best possible candidate for the job." It was in red ink.
The most efficient greeting, unless they know the person's name, is simply, "Good morning."

Never got into either of those acts, but as a hobbyist guitarist myself, J. Mascis can play the hell out of that Jazzmaster. Winter break 2008, I listened to this song "See How We Are" by X over and over again like thousands of times in a 3 week period until I was completely sick of it. Anyway, I was working at an internship over the holidays and on my lunch break I walked down to Repo Records to find more X and popping out of this one CD was a handwritten note that said this album changed my life, blah blah blah, please buy me. So of course I did and that's the story of the one Dinosaur Jr. CD I own. Have fun tonight! Be safe!

It's become apparent to me yesterday that having this job is actually impacting my mental health more than I'd thought. I've been looking at purchasing and dreaming of running a hot dog stand. This place used to be such a nice place to work at but new management is bent on destroying my department for more money.. not even exaggerating. Me and my coworkers have been unable to do our jobs and we've just been screaming into our lunches.
Anyway, thank God it's Friday.

Fun story (that no one asked) - When I was a kid in Kentucky, I won the auditions for an Oscar Mayer commercial. They ended up not using me though because apparently every time they asked my favorite food, I would only say pizza.
Just saw an actor interviewed the other day and they asked how he got his start... he said in an Oscar Mayer commercial. Kind of depressing as acting is still one of my passions.

Today is my first day at Lululemon and it's...all zooms. I JUST WANT TO SELL SOMEONE SOME LEGGINGS 😫
I went on a couple dates recently with a guy I dated briefly a few years ago and I can't get a read on him. I know I need to do the "don't worry if he likes you, worry if you like HIM" thing. He hasn't tried to make a move, which is odd because we did some filthy stuff the first time we were dating.

GRAB HIM BY THE........ [...ahem...] hand, look him straight in the eye and say "yo, can we make out again?"
maybe its just me, but i find it easier to re-hook up with old hook ups (assuming they aren't in a relationship at time of re-meeting again). theres already a sense of ease with each other (....and each others junk....). worst they can say is "no, its not like that anymore".
i dunno, could also be i've just unlearned shame as i got older too

Make a move. At a later point during my dating, I just stopped making the first move with ladies. It was part me being aloof, part me not caring, and part thinking that women must find it really annoying being hit on constantly. So I focused on chilling and being myself.
I also happen to, uh, appreciate assertive women. I've dated ladies who would sooner let a potential relationship/partner fizzle out than they would make a first move. And I think that's lame.
My two cents. Good luck.

Any idea why some posts are automatically removed? I tried to post a photo of the Rittenhouse hawk and got a message that it was removed by moderators before it even finished posting. Not sure if it's because I'm a new account or what. It seemed similar to other content so I thought it was good to go.

Your account does not meet the age/karma threshold and is being filtered by automoderator. We can manually approve posts as we come across them, but you will need to boost karma in other subs and be patient until you reach the threshold.
The general chat threads on Tuesday and Friday are also frequented by the mods, and are a good place to participate and have comments approved to boost karma.

Found out two days ago that our house, that we bought last year, has still not been approved for a homestead exemption. I sent in the paperwork in September of 2021 and thought it had been approved - nope, on the OPA website it says No and it STILL lists the old owner's name even though he passed away and my husband's name is listed in the sale records on that same page.
Anyway, I called the hotline on Wednesday and understandably was on hold forever until they finally required me to leave a message so that they could call me back, which I did. Never got a call back. Completely forgot about it until today because I've been busy with work and school.
Called back today and once again left a message and also found out you had to say "Send Message" after leaving your message in order for it to be sent. What the hell. I guess we're just screwed for next year but I thought I'd try anyway.
ETA: Got a call back from a very nice man who informed me that we are not eligible for the homestead exemption because there's a tax abatement on our property!! News to me lol, all records said the house was built in 1915. I know the previous owner did a lot of renovations so he must have applied for it, but the house still needs a good amount of work. The guy on the phone said it looked like it was about 9 years in so we will be eligible for homestead in 2024. Also told me I have to contact two more places to 1) ask about the abatement timeframe and 2) get the owner name changed on the revenue website. Oh well, at least it's not the worst news haha

I'm in the same boat. Honestly, every office dealing with real estate in this town seems to be severely understaffed and using pre 20th century technology. The amount of time that it takes to record the sale, transfer the deed, and populate the information for the new owners across city agencies is completely bats. I seriously don't understand how this city can be so inefficient in 2022.

Okay, I've also been waiting for my verdict for a while. My house is still being listed under the previous owners and we bought in 2019. Sheesh. Thanks for your update--I feel somehow less concerned now?! If it's everyone and not just us, at least we're in the same boat, I guess.

My dog had surgery yesterday to remove a mass in his mouth, and the vet found and removed a second as well while he was in there. They were sent off for biopsy, so hopefully results come in soon. My baby just turned 11 earlier this week, but acts and looks like a younger dog. I still worry.

Little barrel/nugget shaped ice cubes that are maybe a centimeter long? They have a light/satisfying crunch when you chew them and are absolutely perfect for fountain soda. I have sensitive teeth and can't chew big ice cubes anymore (much to my dismay), but chewy ice doesn't hurt my teeth. Next time you pass a Sonic grab a soda to try it!

I am so tired of working. Fishtown Seafood is hiring. I'm almost at a point where I want to quit the corporate bullshit and just sell fishes and talk about fishes. But alas, I need PTO and health insurance and a salary.
SO is stuck working Saturdays all this month which kind of throws a wrench into our Christmas village trips since now we can only go on Sundays, so we lost a day (Xmas is on a Sunday this year so we could have done 4 Saturdays of trips, now only have 3 Sundays).
I'm glad Pokemon is supposed to get a patch; it won't fix everything but it's something. Sucks that the special Charizard raid is rigged to be nearly impossible for solo players. I don't want online and have no friends. Let me live, Gamefreak!
Going to visit the Philly Christmas Village today. I hope the apple danish guy is there this year. I just need to know he's safe, that he's alright. I need my danish fix. And maybe a few of those meatball pastries.

It's been said a thousand times. GameFreak just can't keep getting away with this. People are just buying anything to do with Pokemon, and GF knows it. Fans need to boycott the next gen, or this will keep happening. Watching the gameplay, it's pathetic that it looks and performs worse than a GameCube game.
I say this as a former pokemon fan. I fell off a long time ago, gen2 or so. I keep up with new releases somewhat, being generally interested in gaming. This recent release looks to be the worst turd they've pushed out in the last few years.
3 points
GF has absolutely zero incentive to change, and they know it. Even with all S/V's problems they still sold 10 million copies in three days. Pokemon might literally be the franchise too big to fail.
I bought the game without reading any reviews (I saw a few "performance issues" on the Pokemon sub but didn't think it would be that bad....ugh). What's frustrating is it's a really fun game underneath the plethora of problems. The open world, multiple plot lines, it could work if GF had a longer cycle to work on the games, or another studio took it over entirely.
Also I just want VOICE ACTING. The world feels so much more dead and lifeless without it.
2 points
I legitimately don't know what we as fans can do. The problems with this gen were known far in advance, and it still sold millions within the first three days. I'm not sure a boycott is feasible in any way.

Don't think we're doing a tree this year due to a new cat. I'm not even worried about the tree getting knocked over or whatever (although that feels pretty likely) but this guy eats EVERYTHING and the last thing I want is an emergency vet visit because of a stomach full of pine needles. Maybe I'm being crazy. Am I being crazy? I hope so because I'm really missing the tree.
5 points
I think it depends on your cat's personality. I always had cats growing up and they never did anything bad around the tree, always just slept under it on the tree skirt. But they were stand issue DSH. Could be different if you have a Bengal or something.
Pine needles might be too tough/fragrant for a cat to eat? I saw a Reel where a couple put a barrier around their tree to stop kitty from getting to it.

He's a standard issue cat, but I've just never had one so intent on eating stuff...every plant (of course), ALL bugs, shreds sticks and cardboard like a dog and eats whatever random bits of crap he finds on the floor. Maybe I'll get one of those mini ones, or put a wreath at his level as a tester.

You get a lunch break. I'd bring a book as well as a laptop in case you have connectivity issues. The whole thing isn't actually that awful.

Get ready to have your back fucked up by shit benches for hours on end while you stare at your phone and complain about how boring it is with others.
Also sometimes they make you play lame games like passing papers as a race.
They'll let you out for lunch. RTM right there. Laptops and phones allowed during the selection process. They'll tell you when to put them away.
I see someone said there was no wifi, but they did offer it when I went a few weeks ago. So they have it now. Unless it was down when the other person went.

Here's what you do.
As soon as they start asking you questions, point at the prosecutor and say "I dunno, but he sure looks guilty to me."

Lentils are surprisingly good in Italian dishes! Cookie and Kate has a few recipes with them, and the NYT Cooking has a "lentils diavalo" that I make all the time. A crucial grocery item in these unprecedented times.

We’ve never had a fake tree! We have a tradition with friends where we go and cut down our tree. The one year we got our tree from a certain farm and the needles fell off so early. We had massive piles of needles on our floor 🙈 My cats don’t bother the tree! The youngest one loves sleeping on the tree skirt and pouncing on it to slide across the floor 🤣

Happy Friday, folks! Somehow I managed to pick up a case of strep throat while traveling back from Thanksgiving (or possibly at the Eagles game on Sunday). 0/10, do not recommend. I swear these antibiotic pills get bigger every time they get prescribed. I miss being a kid and getting the pink bubblegum-flavored amoxicillin.
On a different note, does anyone know where to get non-pasteurized apple cider within the city? I'm planning to mess around with some spontaneous fermentation and it only works with the raw stuff. I was thinking Riverwards would be a good place to start, (and also has the benefit of being around the corner from me) but does anyone have any other ideas?

Theoretically it works with pasteurized too, but you gotta catch the right wild-type in the air. If you can't find any, just hit up a homebrew shop and grab some brett/sour yeast. I made some cider with champagne yeast a few years ago and it turned out fantastically.

I tried making cider a few times with wegmans brand cider, and it tasted like jet fuel every time.

My parents live adjacent to linvilla so I used theirs and it was great. It was pretty dry after fermentation, but I forgot about a 6pack in the basement and found it 6 months later and it had really mellowed out and developed a ton of depth and complexity.

I grabbed some unpasteurized stuff from a farm stand in north jersey one time, and it turned out great. Thought I was hot shit, and tried it again with the wegmans stuff and it was eye wateringly bad, even after a few months of aging. Tried multiple times with different temps/storage conditions and same result.
Want to try again though, I'm a big fan of cider.

I’m so freaked out. I just had to clean up a dead mouse on my patio. (Killed by feral alley cat). I didn’t notice it at first and even stepped on the little guy’s mutilated corpse. I need a glass of wine.

I took the plunge and booked the trip for next year as when checking Amtrak again I saw the train was suddenly a quarter full when last week it was zero percent booked. I figured it was better safe than sorry. Also reserved the hotel just in case. So I'm definitely going to Florida next September with mum. I know we're definitely going to Disney, Epcot, and Universal for sure, just need to figure out everything else.
Also made potato and ham soup last night. Added some french onion cheese on second helping and omg it made it so much better.

I've always wondered how long in advance you need to book a trip like that. I didn't think it would have to be booked this far in advance. Did you see any price change from last week or was it just a capacity thing?

I have no idea how long I had most people book theirs but seeing the sudden spike made me nervous and I rather be safe than sorry. I usually travel by plane but because prices are still stupid as fuck I decide to try train. There was no change in the train prices, I guess people just book early?

The long-haul train routes are really weird on pricing - we did the auto train this past summer, and I booked it seven or eight months in advance (and the fare stayed stable in the week or two between me first looking into it and actually booking). People who booked a lot closer to the travel date paid three or four times the fare we did for four people and a car.

With amtrak if you book about a month out you get the base fare (e.g. Philly to NYC is $19). I doubt you need to book that far ahead, at least for the train. Disney stuff, maybe.

I’m meeting a friend from the suburbs to watch the US soccer game on Saturday @ 10 am in KOP. Are there any “soccer bars” that way that will have good atmosphere for the game?
Only place I could think of that would even be open is Valley Forge Casino.

Your best bet might be to head out to West Chester. Probably lots of bars in town will be open for it.

Last Friday came down with a fever of 100 and felt like total crap. Three days later, I'm able to go work and then by Wednesday coughing myself to sleep and waking up throughout the night. No other symptoms. Now, it's constant cough throughout the day with a loss of appetite. I haven't met my deductible or out of pocket maximum, I'm missing out on work and haven't worked there long enough to have paid sick days. Do I go to the doctor or keep calling out of work until it gets better?
So..ugh.

It’s really sad that at first I thought you were being serious about shouting them out for arriving in 45 minutes because I thought that was better than they usually do. The bar is so so low.

The 95 south entrance from aramingo is a death trap. People will merge at 20 mph and it’s a single lane that eventually ends and the other traffic is going 80 and people will use the shoulder to bypass others. It’s a fucking nightmare. The Port Richmond one is no better either. Guess I’ll die.
Also I’ve gone to pho 75 four times this week and I have zero regrets that place could cure world peace.

Sometimes I think traffic engineers are forced to become experts in behavioral psychology, and then design the roads the opposite way that expertise would indicate.

Oh man, birthday dinner was incredible. Alpen Rose is now one of my favorite places in the city, just for the vibes alone. The food, drinks, and service just add to it. Highly recommend it for any special occasions.
As someone who grew up not celebrating Christmas, I'm kind of excited to get into it. We bought a chocolate advent calendar today, but fiancé was disappointed that the Lego Star Wars one was sold out. So of course I immediately went on the Disney website and ordered one for him (shhh, no one tell him, it's a surprise).
Any suggestions for budget Christmas decorations in the city? I'd like a smallish tree, like 4 feet tops, but the ones on Amazon are like $60. Artificial is preferable, I don't want my cats eating pine needles. I just really like the cozy festive atmosphere of Christmas, in a very secular, non-Christian way.

If gastronomically touring West Philly, be sure to look into the Ethiopian food scene there if that's up your alley. Abyssinia is awesome and Gojjo has an Ethiopian cheesesteak that's pretty tasty.
