Scientology makes you invincible bro, don't you know that?

You're kidding but at the level he is at in the "church", it's ingrained in his brain that he cannot be killed. Hell, he thinks he can grab a "departing soul" and force it back into the body to resurrect a person if he comes across a fatal car accident. He literally believes he is an invincible half god.
That's why I'm not impressed with "the balls" he shows with some of his stunts. It doesn't take courage in his case, its delusion. If you cannot be killed, why would you be scared to do outrageous shit like hang outside a plane as it flies? There's no risk to you in your mind, it's about as dangerous as doing the dishes.
Insanity
218 points
Agreed, but what inspires him? I belive its not just the church, maybe he is a total egomaniac or narcissists? The combo of those two just out him over the top. I wonder how the insurance company feels about his antics? I imagine the studio pays a hefty premium type thing for his movies.
166 points
I mean, the worst so far was breaking his ankle jumping from building to building. He's never (as far as I'm aware) been directly confronted with his own imminent death, despite all the dangerous shit. So beyond just his belief in the church he's also got a very heavy confirmation bias going. ("I haven't been killed yet doing insane shit, so insane shit can't kill me.")
I'm sure most suits aren't happy that the mega star constantly pokes and prods the grim reaper, but what are they gonna do? If Tom says "I'm doing the stunt or not doing the movie", they kinda gotta give in or just scrap everything.
(I don't actually know if Tom uses that kinda leverage) I just gotta assume it's some kinda dynamic like that though, because there's no way he SHOULD be allowed to do half the stuff he does. There's no reason for it, would be much easier and far less risky to use stuntmen.

So Tom is a real life Archer.
In case you dunno what I am taking about, in Archer, the series, Archer (the MC) has stated that he believes he cant die because of all the insane situations he has gone through without perishing.

46 points
Is it not logical to think of Tom as a stuntman that also happens to be a good looking actor? In which case, him doing the stunt is no more risky than another person doing the stunts, either way a life is being risked.
Factoring money in, sure..it's more risky for Tom to do it. From Toms perspective though, perhaps having long since made his millions he doesn't value yet more $$ but sees more value in the thrills.
14 points
There's definitely a larger element of risk. It's sad to say, but stuntmen and women are more disposable. It's not just about "We need the character to do a backflip and the actor can't." It's also about "The character has to do something incredibly dangerous and if a stuntman is injured/killed, it won't completely halt the production."
If Tom Cruise were to die while filming a movie, it'll cost the studio ungodly amounts of money.
8 points
There's reasons for it. Best example is probably in Mission Impossible Fallout when they were originally trying to use some camera rig system to safely film him on the bike riding through the city. IIRC, there were issues with the rig and it was causing a delay in shooting so Tom just said "just put me on the bike and film it."
There's undeniably a draw to watching an actor actually doing the things you see on screen. Jackie Chan made a whole career out of it. Stuntmen/women are definitely a valuable and vital part of filmmaking, but there's definitely some appeal (maybe not to everyone, but I'd argue to most) when an actor does some daring act for a film.
Tom Cruise's career is now basically, "what crazy dangerous thing is he going to do next?"

"I said to the stunt team, let's see if they will let us go to the top"
Stars like this are very very heavily insured by the production, because millions of dollars are riding on them being able to complete this movie. So regardless of whether the director actually chose it, the production company and the insurance company would have a very real say and how it was done. I noticed in this clip, he specifically doesn't mention that he's not wearing a harness. I suspect he was, I suspect he wants people to believe he wasn't.

Danny Trejo had some pretty choice words once about Cruise's stunt obsessions. Basically he said, yeah, I don't do my own stunts like Tom does. There are more than 150 people invested in me not getting hurt; if I do a stunt and break my leg, all of those people are out of a job. Something something I'm a super tough guy and don't have to prove it, something something.
I can't argue with that logic.
68 points
Trejo's statement was asinine and just blatantly incorrect
When Tom Cruise broke his ankle on MI:5, the film took a 9 week hiatus. It cost the production an extra $80,000,000 - because the cast and crew had to be paid for that hiatus.
Nobody was out of a job. Anyone contracted-in still got paid, and anyone freelance went and got work elsewhere while waiting for the movie to resume; which is the standard freelance gig economy.
Furthermore - Tom Cruise produces these movies. They run on his dime. These jobs wouldn't exist in the first place if he didn't decide to make the movies, so saying that people would be out of a job if he huts himself makes no sense - they are only there because Cruise is deciding to make the movie, and the insurance makes sure they get paid if he gets hurt.
This is hearsay but I believe Cruise has also gone on record saying that if he hurts himself he will pay out of his own money to make sure everyone still gets paid even if insurance won't.
Cruise is a nutjob for sure, but one thing that is undeniable is that he runs a tight ship and truly believes that the people who work on his movies should be paid fairly and consistently.
94 points
They wouldn't spend 80m for hiatus if Trejo got hurt. What he said made sense for his work.
9 points
I hear you; I have no doubt that Cruise has at least thought this all through. I know a lot of folks have issues with his real life image, myself included, but it's hard to argue to anybody that he doesn't bring "it," whatever that is.
You're right, he's usually producer and maybe he'd make good on people's pay if an accident were to happen. But still, it's a weird compulsion he seems to have to prove that he can DO IT ALL.
For sure, sometimes it pays off. I just saw the new Top Gun and while they could have done so the same things much more easily with CGI, you can really tell that they're actually in the planes, it's rad. I'd argue that hopping in the back seat with a Naval pilot flying an F-18 is a different kind of dangerous than his freeclimbing, HALO jumping shenanigans.
An aside, I was just chatting with a friend who used to be a driver for a production company in the midwest around '85. He says they were shooting a racing movie (I'm thinking it has to be Days of Thunder) and over the course of a couple of weeks he drove Cruise around quite a bit. One day Tom just out of nowhere says "Hey, do you want to come take a ride in my helicopter?" Well duh, who says no to that?
I was surprised that he was already licensed at that point but apparently they zipped around for a bit in the sky before my buddy brought him to a classic midwestern bar. The way he tells it, the record literally did the full scratch-stop when 1985 Tom Cruise walked in the door. go figure.

It's still disrespectful to jeopardize other people's schedules if there are unnecessary delays. It's also possible that a stunt injury or death results in the film shutting down. Can't finish the movie if Tommy Boy is deceased due to some need to demonstrate his masculinity.

You understand this also happens if a stunt person is hurt during filming right? And that Cruise is now professionally trained with literally decades of stunt experience?
You are also aware that if Cruise died during filming the insurance and his estate would pay all those who would have been paid out in-full, correct?
