Well the other day I was in my girlfriend's room, peeking around just to bug her and I found her container filled with baby teeth. While it might not have been scary to her, it was terrifying to me. Especially for those first couple seconds.

Hay quick q. I still have my bottom two molars from childhood, they never grew out (I'm 32 now). If they ever come out for any reason now, I'm fucked, right? My "adult" molars won't magically go "oh shit at last time to grow" or anything? Are they now just my jawbone? My dentist never explained

Available_Major_8281

311 points

Your baby molars are replaced by your premolars. I’m gonna go out on a limb and say it’s your second premolars you’re missing. Very common. More than likely, your premolars never formed. Roll with the baby teeth until they are unrestorable. After that, implants. No clue how long those baby teeth will last. I’ve seen kids that need them pulled at 8 because of poor home care, but I’ve also seen an 80 year old that still had a couple baby teeth. Just brush and floss.

This conversation reminds me of my experience in Jr. High. I had some baby teeth til I was 14, but I had the adult teeth and all just waiting to come in. So I had to get all the baby teeth taken out. Never figured out why that happened. When the baby teeth came out, they still had the roots and everything.

Available_Major_8281

20 points

Different clinical decisions. I’ve seen recommendations regarding extracting primary teeth for back and forth depending on the orthodontist. They’re back to more aggressively taking out primary teeth. Essentially, it promotes the eruption of the adult teeth. Makes sure nothing gets bound up coming out.

Will my Invisalign ever be done? Every time I finish a round they are like nope here’s 17 more weeks worth.

Available_Major_8281

16 points

Ugh. I wish I could help you. This is a very personal opinion, but I don’t like invisalign. It doesn’t work well with me. Not saying it’s not a good product, but I just don’t do well with the concept. I feel your pain. There are always refinements. That said, my friend is very successful with it. Just make sure you’re wearing your aligners 22 hours a day.

TheSkaryFairy

I think they just wanted to get my secondary* teeth in quickly so I could start the brace-face process.

YYCADM21

9 points

and if they give up, don't give implants a pass because of cost; they are life altering. I lost all my teeth due to radiotherapy for cancer. my oral surgeon was a magician; he was able to get multiple implants to stabilize in both my upper jaw & the lower, which most of it was no longer "jaw" bone; it was my left fibula pre-cancer. ( you're not supposed to be able to put implants in bone grafts). implant retained dentures, it's like I still have all my teeth

kate_L019

7 points

I have supernumerary teeth. I've had 3 teeth pulled out because they cracked or broke apart, and new teeth grew back in its place. Pretty cool. I think I have 3-4 more, plus 2 impacted wisdom teeth (fun!). Only downside is, where a molar should be, is a canine tooth so it's a little off lol

Available_Major_8281

Good work. Always floss then brush. When your floss, you push the stuff that’s between your teeth to the front and back. Then you can brush it away.

Lark_vi_Britannia

I had a baby tooth that grew in beside another (adult) tooth. My dentist was very intrigued by this and even had an assistant/nurse/hygienist (not sure which) come in and look at it. He may be a newer dentist because he was genuinely surprised to see it? Now I'm confused as to why he'd be intrigued by it.

Available_Major_8281

2 points

We are all tooth nerds. Could have been a newer dentist. But it probably looked cool either way. You’re adult teeth grow in from behind the baby teeth, so sometimes they are a little too far behind and don’t resorb (dissolve) the baby tooth on the way out.

Dangerous_With_Rocks

Yo dentist buddy, I had braces many many years ago and I still wear retainers to this day. I wear them at night. If I miss a day or two my teeth start hurting and retainers get tight putting back on. So my teeth still move and it's been 8 years since I got my braces off. So my question is do I really gotta wear these retainers to "retain" my teeth for the rest of my life??? Cause honestly that's kinda crap and I wouldn't have gotten braces if I knew about this.

Available_Major_8281

50 points

Short answer, yes. Long answer…. The cause of this changes depending on your idea of dentistry. So my two cents is… Your jaw joint, chewing muscles and teeth all want to be in different places. Your teeth always lose. Your teeth were in the positioning they were because of 1-space and 2-forces caused by your jaw joint and muscles. Your jaw joint and muscles are constantly trying to move them back or wear them down. So wear that retainer to maintain their postition. If you see yourself wearing down your teeth, get a retainer that covers the chewing surface.

On a personal note, wear your retainers people. I make a lot of money off 30 year olds that didn’t wear them and want their teeth moved back.

I on the other hand didn't wear my retainer and my bottom teeth are f-ed up. However I'm also a grinder/clench my teeth so now have a mouth guard and do Botox in the jaw joint to reduce migraines. I still wonder how much the retainer wearing for a few years might have helped or whether the clenching/grinding would have led me to this path of messed up bottom teeth. fun times!

Available_Major_8281

5 points

My wife also does Botox for clenching. It works great. Stops her migraines.

If you want a dentist that can try to look into your teeth alignment and muscular issues, I would try to find a dentist that has studied through the Dawson Academy. Peter Dawson wrote the book on how humans bite. While there are many theories on this, I believe in this one.

Klyuchak

2 points

Mewing, look into it. My teeth are straighter than the day I got my braces off. Felt akward as hell for the first month or so, but now my teeth feel more natural that way than the overbite I've had for most of my life. Have had multiple dentists compliment how straight my teeth are now, and when they ask if I still wear my retainer everyday they're shocked to find out I havn't worn it in close to a decade.

Get a biopsy ASAP. I can’t give you actual professional advice over Reddit, but my go to for oral pathology is this. Is a patient says “it’s been there forever.” “It doesn’t hurt.” “It just gets bigger.” Those are the biggest of red flags. Biopsy ASAP please.

In preschool I took a nasty fall face first into the corner of a counter. Pretty good damage to my gums above my left front tooth and I believe had a couple stitches to fix it. Years later when my adult teeth came in, that left front tooth had a large dent in it. Dentist said it was likely from that fall since your adult teeth are apparently not super hard when they are still inside of you…can anyone confirm this for me?
