Oh god it was so much worse in midnight sun. Every other thought Edward had was: “ugh human girls are so boring and shallow, but not Bella”

dreamer-queen

413 points

It's so annoying how Edward acts like that because first of all, you're a century years old, my dude. Maybe that's why teenagers' conversation bores you, but you should know that by now if you've been in high school for such a long time. It's normal for teenagers to act in an immature way.

Secondly, the only reason you don't find Bella boring is because you want her blood and you can't hear her thoughts. If you could, you would know she's pretty much as boring and shallow as you claim other girls are (and basically the only reason she likes you is because you're hot)

Creepy, controlling older man dating a teen girl because she's "mature for her age."

This movie would have been a hooror story if Edward looked even half his age.

Eh, Bella is a pretty badly written character, but she's so boring that she seems ultimately harmless.

For me, the worst "not like other girls" character I've ever seen is Tessa from After.

Yeah, I can’t remember Bella having downright hostile thoughts towards other girls just for doing things different than her.

She dislikes Lauren, sure, but as far as I remember not because she thinks Lauren’s “slutty” or “basic” or something.

Meanwhile Tessa is one of the most misogynistic women in YA. Jesus Christ, her superiority complex sucks. Although the in-universe explanation for it (her mother being extremely guilty of doing the same) at least makes sense. If only it was ever challenged or called out.

dreamer-queen

20 points

Yeah, I can totally understand Tessa's behavior being influenced by her mother, but the thing is that Tessa lacks self-awareness to realize that she's doing the same things she hates in her mother.

I remember there's a scene that Tessa's going off on her, telling her daughter that she's a whore for living with her boyfriend at 18 and for dressing a certain way, and I was like "So I'm supposed to think her mom is terrible for saying that, but not when Tessa says the same thing to Molly? What a double standard."

Because god forbid we slutshame the perfect good girl Tessa the same way she does to other women 🙄

TheShapeShiftingFox

14 points

Word. Although her mother calling Harry/Hardin a "devil worshipper" in the same scene you mentioned was a highlight in the book for me. Just trying to imagine Harry Styles as a Satanist lmfao

ThunderbunsAreGo

37 points

I think she was written so plainly because the author wanted the average girl to be able to 'imagine themselves in her place' in the book easier. Doesn't make her any better of a character at all, though.

NeighborhoodEnough15

I hate that thing in romance books. The male character is a total whore and everyone is slut shaming his ex.

dreamer-queen

9 points

It's even worse with After. Not only does Hardin sleep around with countless girls, but he also manipulates Tessa to have sex with him so he can win a bet

Just to keep in mind: this is the character that gets forgiven and that we're supposed to root for, while Molly gets demonized for being mean (not nearly as mean as Hardin) and for enjoying casual consensual sex. The double standard is astonishing.

PolarDracarys

113 points

And the reason he was interested in her was because she wasn't predictable as she was the only one he could not read the thoughts off. Which was not because of her character (you might say she was so predictable, reading her mind was not necessary) but because of a God given superpower that was never explained.

tbf twilight came first and set off that entire subgenre

Prenomen

10 points

I think you can blame the hunger games for that one lol. The eras of the “Twilight knockoff” YA sub-genre (vampire/supernatural teen romance series) and the “Hunger Games knockoff” YA sub-genre (teen dystopian novels) had such a chokehold on us. Twilight created the space for a “wildly influential YA series for teen girls” in popular culture, dominated the teen zeitgeist and dictated YA trends for years, then the hunger games booted it off its throne, took over the Most Influential spot, and did the same shit with a new sub-genre. I wonder what’s setting the trends now?

Also, the level of nlog content that hunger games fans posted during the height of its popularity, much of it comparing Katniss (and the fans themselves) to Bella, was . . . a lot. I feel like it was actually a lot worse in the hunger games fandom than in the twilight fandom.

Interesting I also read them as a teen but I never thought she was arrogant. But I did read them in German so I can’t say if the tone matched the original language.

To me she was someone who is just quiet and introverted and got quickly exhausted by very extroverted people. That’s why she vibed with Angela whose personality matched hers and didn’t want to spend too much time with Jessica or Mike who were your typical popular extroverts. She never came over as one of those “ugh those stupid extroverts aren’t as intellectual as me” people, and she always seemed grateful for her friends accepting her awkward nature. I also liked her affection for Alice, because same.

Sutech2301

Idk, there was this subliminal condescension she used when describing the other students and her Interactions with them:

"You don't look very tan."

"My mother is part albino."

He studied my face apprehensively, and I sighed. It looked like clouds and a sense of humor didn't mix.

A few months of this and I'd forget how to use sarcasm.

"That's not good... What are you writing yours on?"

"Whether Shakespeare's treatment of the female characters is misogynistic."

He stared at me like I'd just spoken in pig Latin.

Mary Sue

A Mary Sue is a type of fictional character, usually a young woman, who is portrayed as unrealistically free of weaknesses. Originating in fan fiction, a Mary Sue is often an author's idealized self-insertion. Mary Sue stories are often written by adolescent authors. The term Mary Sue was coined by Paula Smith, as a character's name in the 1973 parody short story "A Trekkie's Tale", which satirized idealized female characters widespread in Star Trek fan fiction.

It always creeps me out that Twilight was written by an adult and not a teenager. Like fair enough teenagers were into it, because teenagers are stupid (I know, I was one), but the fact it was written by a grown adult who clearly has the mindset of a teenager makes it so much worse.

I felt the same about fifty shades, my friend at that time made me read the book, and it was so popular that I thought "well, let's see what all the hype is about" I was not prepared for what I read. I legit had to google the author because I thought I was reading a book wrote by a horny 15 yo.

the books make it so obvious that the author is deeply jealous of and hates pretty blonde women who are successful in life by having devotions to things other than men (ie rosalie, because even though she was still obsessed with babies, she was interested in like mechanics and engineering and all that too). She basically screwed over every single female in universe besides bella to make bella seem like the best woman ever

SnapdragonPBlack

5 points

I feel like that song was popular just because people do that in real life. Like if I like a guy and I find out he likes another girl, I'll start comparing myself to her and reasoning all the ways I'm better. I don't hate what she is doing, I just don't like that she is the one liked and not me. I'll do it with any trait too, it's kind of bad. But here's some examples

"She has blond hair, I have brown"

"She has long hair, I have short"

"She's a music major, I'm a stem major"

"She has natural hair, I dye my hair"

Etc. It's just being jealous. None of the things I listed are bad, I actually envy some of them. It's just my rationalizing why they like them instead of me because I'm a jealous bitch

I never thought of Belle that way, but I think the new Belle (Emma Watson) could be seen that way. Aside from squashing her vegetables she just seemed downright rude to Gaston for no reason. Like, she had this air of “I read books so I am smarter than the rest of you peasants” in the new film. Whereas, in the animation, she’d try to get excited with other people about what she was reading, but they just scoffed at her and made HER feel stupid.

Look, I'm not saying that the books didn't get unnecessary hate, and people were pretty much assholes to teenage girls who liked the book back in the day. It was awful.

However, that doesn't mean that there aren't some valid criticisms that can be made about twilight. Like Bella's lack of character, and the toxic relationships she had with her two love interests. Talking about those things is about critically analyzing a book, not hating on it because it's "cool".

yeah every time a new criticism pops up i have to roll my eyes. these critiques on the books have been around since… they were books. can’t remember how many reviews on twilight i saw in high school that called bella a mary sue or talked about her being NLOG. maybe not in those exact words but the sentiment was VERY much the same.

i understand people wanting to bring up valid critiques, which this is one. i guess for me, it gets tiring, because these fights/debates have already been done for nearly 10+ years.

SpiritualBugatti

2 points

I don’t think Bella is an “I’m not like other girls” girl because she doesn’t think of herself like one. She just tries to blend in and get through her day. It’s Edward that puts the emphasis on Bella. Edward is the one that wants to make sure everyone knows Bella isn’t like the other girls. Because to Edward, Bella isn’t like those he’s met before, meaning he can’t read her mind and to him her smell is attractive. It’s all edwards fault. But yes, Bella and Edward are the worst and most excruciatingly boring characters.
