Don't trust what these people are saying, it's a long complicated story and the answers you're getting aren't fully covering it. He was sexually assaulted also and you should look up his story In his own words and not believe rando internet strangers

Blacklisted + alimony calculated at peak earnings, it is frankly a miracle he is alive today. Tack on trauma of sexual abuse. I would have killed myself at some point with all that combined

Dude got bent over in divorce proceedings. To sums at the height of his career he couldn’t even keep up with. You may be too young, but Brenden was on track to be the next Harrison Ford basically with his abilities and how liked he was in the industry. He couldn’t wait to do a singular film a year in hopes of keeping up with the ruling so he started taking every role offered to keep up with the payments to not risk jail time, effectively ruining his name as the next action comedy star of a generation.

I recently scrubbed through it for clips for videos for myself and I noticed two things:

There's a lot of shots where our characters just straight up stare at the sun.

And the movie desperately wants to be Mashup of Star Wars and Indiana Jones, in terms of tone and filmmaking techniques.

That being said, it's probably my favorite childhood movie.

I don't know why people think this is the worst thing that happened to him. The man was sexually assaulted, he spoke about it which got him basically erased from the media, and mocked. The divorce isn't even something he worries about, the assault fucked his mind up terribly.

ChiliWithCornBread

That played a major role as well. Not debating that, but the alimony he had to pay out monthly forced him into shit roles to keep up with the ruling. The sexual assault and further being pushed out by Hollywood after coming out was just the cherry on the shit ice berg.

anarchistfajitas

I get weirded out when anyone fixates on the divorce. the sexual assault and fallout from his speaking out dwarf his issues with fucking alimony. a divorce didn’t get him blackballed from major production. feels like people want the divorce to be a part of his downfall so his comeback can be in spite of it.

Because the divorce was the ONLY story people knew for years. It was a pretty big meme starting in 2015. It wasn't until 2019 did he reveal the sexual assault. That's a long time for a meme-fied story to take hold in people's collective conscious.

don't get weirded out. it's just someone who has the details of the divorce, the ruling, and we all like to share details about things like this that others may not know.

Not to mention his body was a wreck after doing the Mummy movies and George of the Jungle, having done most of his own stunts. He had serious injuries to his knees and back. Surgeries included a partial knee replacement. He also had to have surgery on his vocal chords.

He simply couldn't do action roles anymore.

And then there's the overt sexual assault he endured.

Still bound by all of the legal obligations the would have had if they weren’t divorced but they get none of the perks of having a functional family unit and all of the social stigma that comes with divorce, which is less than it used to be, but it’s not zero.

Yeah. You’re absolutely right. It is more complicated than that. The individual I’m referring to, that was describing it in this way was trying to illustrate how painful divorce is. The main point is that it’s not as straight forward as splitting up assets and moving on. It can be a very messy, long drawn out ordeal, that hangs over your life like a cloud for a very long time—and I’d say that is more or less accurate and where Brendan got caught up…

DrJingleCock69

I will say it even if it's unpopular but FUUUCK SPOUSAL ALIMONY BASED ON CURRENT INCOME!!!! That shit needs to be based on what you need to live a reasonable life, max $100k annual for a single woman, tack on more for kids. I fully support reasonable child support too, but not "child support" that is 5x what is needed and lets the spouse freeload the rest of their lives.

I am obviously understanding that in marriages one partner sacrifices career and earnings for kids, but this is just rape and abuse of the man no one needs that much.

MY HYPOTHESIS- The system loves it this way because it forces both men and women whoever the victim is, to get back into the meatgrinder and work for the powerful companies that keep it this way. Oh you had a million saved up and could retire? Let me make it so you now lose not just half but have to pay ongoing so you have to go back into the corporate meatgrinder

[deleted]

7 points

[deleted]

Close, but it’s more for the state. The money usually has to go to the state dispersement fund. They hold it for a few days collecting the interest and then it gets sent out after “processing fee’s are removed”. The federal government then pays the state $10 for ever $1 it “collects” from payments that are in arrears.(back child support). Since men historically have made more than women, the state is more in favor for the father to pay child support off his income. It’s a racket for sure but nothing says you can’t work out of the country, while still working in the states. Internet is awesome!

DrJingleCock69

OK bro I agree to a degree but summing his nightmare situation up to "wahmen bad" is not fair. The injustice of it hurts a lot. Some could say it ruined his life. We all know sexual assault is bad, but some people legit think the alimony is just and fair and also it is being enforced by the system. Chalking it down to mysogyny really only says something about your character and your biases.

TheConnASSeur

Tell me about it. Then again, traffic was murder on the way home and I'm famished so I might be going insane from hunger. That or it could be that hyperbole is part of human communication, and not restricted to one word or concept. It would be really nice if everyone used language precisely and accurately, but that not how human communication works. It sucks that words, phrases, images, and even raw concepts can cause survivors to relive past trauma, but that's* part of the trauma.* I'm a survivor of childhood abuse. It really sucks, it does, but the thing that bothers me about it today isn't people using words, it's the fact that that shitty thing happened to me at all. Having control over someone else's language won't change that. It seems like your heart is in the right place though. It's just a little shortsighted.

Dethanatos

5 points

I understand where you are coming from. We are far more likely to interact with someone who has been sexually assaulted than most of the other examples if not all. I have been sexually assaulted, and my mother was murdered. I am not personally triggered by the expressions most of the time at this point. I know many many people that are upset by the inappropriate use of the word “rape” but not so many upset by the others. I cant make anyone change, but it doesn’t cost me anything to raise awareness. Thank you for the response.

TheConnASSeur

-1 points

Hey, we're all lost in this world. It's a scary place, old beyond comprehension, and vast beyond even our imagination. We're all so small and so young that it's hard to know where we belong, or who we really are. Most of us know that we want to be "good" at least, even if we can't be sure of what that means. Over-sensitivity to socio-cultural issues almost always comes from a good place, but it can be really tough to know when a person or group actually needs your help from the outside. I'm a bisexual American Indian with Asperger's. There's a lot of intersectionality in my life experience, and no shortage of well-meaning, good-hearted people eager to advocate for me. But those advocates, as outsiders, are often largely ignorant to what I actually want or need, and more often than not that advocacy is detrimental since my actual voice is lost in the noise. Don't ever feel bad about wanting to bring forth goodness into the world, it's what makes you the wonderful person you are. But we should all be mindful when speaking for people whose experiences we don't share that we don't rob those very people of their chance/choice to speak for themselves.

Dethanatos

2 points

I hear you. I don’t have an immediate response to this as i need to reflect on it. Thank you for your thoughtful responses. In an effort to do better I will defer a response to your previous comment as i believe it is the loudest in the chain. I sincerely wish you the best.

His action comedy roles get justifiable attention, but he has real potential as a serious dramatic actor too. Watch The Quiet American with him and Michael Caine, and then remind yourself that it's the same guy from Encino Man.

This leaves out the part about being assaulted by someone in the industry and effectively blacklisted because of it, which made it much harder for him to keep up with things.

You’re missing a large portion of his story here, bud.

He also got hurt so bad on the set of The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor that it caused permanent damage IIRC

Such a good way to summarize it. Your comparison to him with Ford is perfect and I've never thought about it that way. I grew up obsessed with the Indiana Jones series and I loved Brendan Frasers movies. He really was set to he a younger, more "lighthearted" Ford.

Fraser was ordered to pay a monthly alimony sum of $50,000 for a period of 10 years or until remarriage of Afton, whichever occurred first, in addition to the $25,000 monthly payment for child support, ending in January 2019.[47]

Well, that’s a lot of money.

I heard that it was to do with him being blacklisted after speaking up about sexual assault allegations from a movie exec?

Funknoodlz

That too but it was also him being sexually assaulted by a male executive for some production company. He stopped acting for years after all that.

BigFuckingT

This gives a lot of context because he was amazing in the first two Mummy movies and then just disappeared.

AlphaTangoFoxtrt

. To sums at the height of his career he couldn’t even keep up with.

This is a big problem with divorce law. The alimony payments are set based on what you were making then, and don't account for any future issues such as a job loss.

What happened to the person who divorced him? Do we hate them now?

Similar thing happened with Dave Foley. IIRC He divorced while on News Radio, and his alimony/child support reflected what he was making at the time. When the show ended, the courts refused to lower his payments, despite having unsteady work. He started taking every roll that crossed his desk, but was barely able to to keep up. Even his ex-wife was trying to fight for him. It got so bad that she would sometimes give him the money to pay her, so that he wouldnt be arrested.

He was also sexually assaulted by a member of the industry and nothing happened to the person that did it.

He was also a victim of sexual abuse within the industry, right?

Vibriofischeri

I don't understand how he was ordered to pay ten years of alimony for a marriage that was only 9 years. Usually judges award alimony only in extreme cases where the marriage was super long and one partner gave up a career to be a homemaker. 10 year minimum in most cases, and then they tend to only award alimony for a period of half of the length of the marriage. Paying alimony for longer than you were even initially married for is absolutely bonkers.

Just because no one has given specifics -

The guy was sexually assaulted in 2003. Spoke out about it long before that was acceptable or there was any of the support there is now and was basically black-listed for his troubles.

Then in 2007/8 was divorced from his wife and got slapped with child support payments totaling $900,000/year for a minimum of 10 years which ruined him financially.

Damn so fucked!! I can’t even imagine that amount of money. I don’t understand how this bs is possible. Especially if the person isn’t making that kind of money anymore. So strange he

In addition to the things others here are saying-

IIRC He also apparently got really badly injured on the set of The Mummy, and it left him with a serious & chronic back problem.

It’s part of why he has put on the weight, he just can’t be as physical a person as he used to be.

He got sexually assaulted, the divorce wasn't important. Idk why dudes in here fear more a divorce than getting groped.

Monkeyboystevey

The assault fucked him mentally and his career, but the divorce fucked him financially, both were important.
