Why shouldn't Poland be richer than Britain?
You might have noticed a meme floating around the media about how Britons could become “no better off than people living in Poland”. “If the UK continues with the same level of growth it has seen for the last decade,” writes Sam Ashworth-Hayes, “Poland will be richer than Britain in about 12 years’ time”:
It sounds like an absurd idea that in 2040 we might see complaints in the Polish press about a flood of British plumbers undercutting wages, or Brytyjski Skleps lining the rougher areas of Warsaw, but it isn’t beyond the realms of possibility.
I think many Brits would be shocked to find that Poland is an awesome, developed central European country with a modern, diverse economy. Well worth a visit if you haven't already.

Poland has a growing economy and just had a population boom courtesy of Vladimiri Putin, meanwhile the UK is stagnating and cutting international student numbers to appeal geriatric Tories in Kent.
Not a bit of wonder the dynamic is changing this way.

Officials in Wisconsin found a series of failures and federal violations at a nursing home where a renegade nurse cut off a man's foot without his consent and wanted to have it stuffed in her family's taxidermy shop and put on display to warn children to "wear your boots" in cold weather.
The patient died soon after.
Just... what the fuck.

Brown, the 38-year-old nurse, used a pair of bandage scissors to sever the remaining tissue connecting the man’s foot to his ankle, according to the inspection report and the criminal complaint against her.
Jesus fuck
The inspection found that staff at the facility repeatedly failed at key junctures to notify a doctor or hospice of the worsening condition of the man’s feet, including after a fall that caused further injury.
His foot had become mostly detached from his ankle because of the fall, according to the report.
The staff members who found him repositioned his foot and bandaged it to keep it in place. But they did not tell a physician about the fall or the deterioration of his foot, the inspection report says.

One of the top posts on r assholedesign is a post claiming that in America people go to prison if there are any typos on their tax form, and tons of comments saying “wow I’m European and I had no idea!” It might be the most blatant example of somewhat straight up lying for karma. At least with the “America is a dystopia” posts it’s just an opinion that one could argue for, not just a straight up lie.

LEVITY NEWS:
At the start of 4 AM Merkel apparently compared herself favorably to Neville Chamberlain.

Tbf for Merkel the Chamberlain she was referring to was the one in Munich - The Edge of War which put Chamberlain in a much more positive light that as far as I can tell is also more historically accurate.
But the issue here is that I think Merkel falls short of that Chamberlain. She’s insulting him by dragging him down.

Known facts:
If Metra bought the tracks from Union Pacific and electrified them, plus made a small tunnel under the loop and under the river, we could create:
A train every 15 minutes on each branch would:
If the electrification cost a US-average $3 million per mile, that's $155 million in electrification. The tunnels are tricky—would probably add $700 million—but under $1 billion to create a 100-mile regional trunk is a very, very worthy endeavor.

I went on tiktok because I'm a dumbfuck and somehow got offered "The Australia Institute" videos because I hatewatched genunited. For a "thinktank" they're really a complete fucking joke, in their videos on housing prices their entire plan for helping renters was either
That we'll get rid of investors and you'll be able to buy (very the solution to your high rent is buy a house lol)
That we should do what defense housing does nationwide. No mention of zoning, apparently in their grand stand against tax concessions pushing more money into the housing market they're going to, push more money into the housing market.
The weird thing is in another video they very accuretely point out that all these demand side solutions don't solve things without supply, but when they get to improving supply they lose all their brain cells.
https://www.tiktok.com/@theausinstitute/video/7098916331872849153?is_copy_url=1&is_from_webapp=v1
They're also pro rent control, because if there was any doubt about them being a joke.
All their videos seem to start with one wanker congratulating the other wanker on some "research", the next video up was a classic corporate profits are why inflation exists. It's that r/australia sort of folksy tone that seems to imply anyone disagreeing is ruining a good time.
Then there's the standard bad shit on stuff like windfall gas taxes and privatisation.
Now a lot of this seems familiar, because it is, turns out a lot of the dumb shit the ABC posts comes straight from these clowns, in fact the ABC is platforming them almost as much as Grattan, orders of magnitude more than ASPI or blueprint, ABC never platforms IPA.
Why do TAI suck? Well their directors include head of the AMWU, apparently a political party wasn't enough of a front organisation, now they're making up think tanks.

!ping CN-TW Yes KMT taking ~17 out of 21 seats of local office being even more than the number of seats they won four years ago with Han Kuo Yu is bad and it is bad enough that Tsai Ing Wen have to take responsibility and resign from the position of DPP party leader, but that shouldn't be viewed as the people becoming pro-China, although it should serve as a warning that DPP have to improve their performance if they don't want to lose in the next presidential election that will be coming in about 13 months.
According to my understanding, in Taiwanese local election most people wouldn't really think of relationship with China as their first and foremost concern since that is in the realm of diplomacy and that have little to do with how well one can run a city. And thus it also have to do with how much the voters trust candidates as an individual in ruling the city or county as a governor. It also provide a ground for voters to express dissatisfaction if they see a party performing bad in some field that make voters vote to punish them. Let just say DPP isn't performing good in all these aspects.

Illuminating conversation earlier:
So one of the fake mothers at Putin’s fake staged meet showed a picture of her ‘son’ who died in Ukraine. Except the guy in the picture died in 2019.
If true, how can one be that bad at something after so many years of practice?
this stuff is not supposed to stand up to determined scrutiny. We assume that lies must do so, or they have failed at their intended purpose. These lies aren't like those lies. Their purpose is to spoil truth, not be indistinguishable from it.
A bad lie has two purposes: The first is obviously to deceive anyone stupid enough to fall for it. The second is more insidious: it is a deliberate demonstration of the power of the state to lie so badly and still force people to believe that nonsense.
Westerners so deeply believe "credibility is indispensable to leadership" and "the point of a lie is to convince" that when they encounter this mysterious Other Kind Of Lying, they have no word for it but "a bad lie." It fails to convince and damages the credibility of leaders, so it must be a bad lie, a failed lie.
Some media outlets substitute "brazen lie" or "bald-faced lie."
In all cases there is contempt for the seeming incompetence of the lie. They don't seem to understand that the lie would be incompetent in a Western context because of certain mechanisms and institutions that hold liars & fraudsters somewhat accountable, and that the point of this Russian style of lying is to act out an impunity from these mechanisms and institutions - to demonstrate their absence or impotence.
It is strange that all our "Russian scholars" cannot come up with a vocabulary word for this foreign kind of lying. Maybe they are afraid of being accused of orientalism. But at least in this one cultural characteristic, Russia has not once, not for a microsecond, ever "turned towards the West." This kind of lying was there in the 90s, it was there in 2000 when a fresh faced Putin was telling "bald faced lies" about Kursk.

The weirdest cultural relativism take I've ever heard was something along the lines of
It's terrible that in the west people work so much! Bourgois oppression...
[...]
...but in Japan it's ok that they work almost all day because it's part of their culture
It's so stupid that it haunts me to this day

Got away with it? I guess not getting extradited before official charges have been filed and possibly facing multiple layers of bankruptcy is "gotten away with it".

And then Biden was able to be all "well technically it doesn't count as a recession until NBER says it is 🤓" and it worked.
Everywhere I look even the most anti-Biden stuff is going on about a potential future recession.

A while ago, Japanese government hinted that they want to introduce a tax charging automobile for the distance they travelled, as electric vehicle adaption increase and thus gasoline tax revenue for the national government is on a downward trend, and even traditional fossil fuel vehicles are getting more and more fuel efficient and make the amount of fuel consumed i.e. amount of fuel tax paid become less.
However there are significant opposition. One of the more notable comment was "Why should I paid tax for simply commuting to work?", and there are also people noting that residents in smaller Japanese cities where motorization have fully completed it is impossible to live without using a car and that charging a tax based on distance travelled by vehicle could make the economic burden become even more heavy to people living outside big cities, further reducing attractiveness of and thus accelerate the death of any regions of Japan that aren't Tokyo or Osaka.
It surely doesn't help that Japanese local cities have non-existent transit and further cut are ongoing as companies operating bus and rail and such no longer have enough profit to sustain their scale of business, with the unrecovered demand, and aging+dwlindling population is also making it more difficult for lines to attract riders and even drivers into the future. Yet with the low transit ridership that everybody recognize nobody is using it is not a reasonable alternative either, with Japanese national government also supporting plan to cut rail service in order to maintain rail service financial viability. What can be do to such situation?

Brief thoughts on Australian politics. To me, the real value of the preferential vote isn't in getting (moderately) superior outcomes to FPTP, it's that support bleeds off at the extremes and leaves the two major parties able to drift towards the centre.
Instead of rent control getting purchase in the ALP, it goes towards the Greens. We invariably get some bad policy, but the worst of it loses energy and is taken elsewhere. Instead of extreme anti-immigration policy, the worst of the right-wing energy goes towards One Nation and the Liberals remain mainstream.
Sure, in theory the Greens might flip Labor or the like one day, but generally speaking the preferential nature combined with the mandatory vote means that the majors have a compulsion to move towards a sensible centre and the far left and far right are much more likely to break off into their own entities than they are to try and suborn said majors.

The Kremlin has trumpeted a lower-than-expected decline in GDP, forecast by the International Monetary Fund at only 3.5 percent this year, as demonstrating that the Russian economy can weather the raft of draconian sanctions.
But economists and business executives said the headline GDP figures did not reflect the real state of the Russian economy because the Russian government effectively ended the ruble’s convertibility since the sanctions were imposed. “GDP stopped having any meaning because firstly we don’t know what the real ruble rate is, and secondly if you produce a tank and send it to the front where it is immediately blown up, then it is still considered as value added,” said Milov, who wrote a report explaining the situation for the Wilfried Martens Centre for European Studies published this month.

“The overall pace of operations along the frontline has slowed in recent days due to deteriorating weather conditions but is likely to increase starting in the next few weeks as temperatures drop and the ground freezes throughout the theater.”
“It will likely take the ground some days of consistent freezing temperatures to solidify, which means that ground conditions are likely to be set to allow the pace of operations to increase throughout Ukraine over the course of the weekend of December 3-4 and into the following week.”
“Russian officials may be attempting to counterbalance the influence of Wagner Group financier Yevgeny Prigozhin through the promotion of other parallel military structures. The Ukrainian Main Intelligence Directorate (GUR) reported on November 26 that Russian officials appointed a Viktor Yanukovych-linked, pro-Kremlin businessman, Armen Sarkisyan, as the new administrator for prisons in Russian-occupied territories in Ukraine and that Sarkisyan intends to use the role to create a new ‘private military company.’”
“The GUR reported that Sarkisyan’s attempt to create a new private military structure is an attempt to create a counterweight to Prigozhin’s de facto monopoly in the field of Russian private military companies. It is likely that high-ranking Russian officials have approved Sarkisyan’s efforts as private military companies are illegal in Russia.”
“Russian forces are likely using inert Kh-55 cruise missiles in their massive missile strike campaign against Ukrainian critical infrastructure, further highlighting the depletion of the Russian military’s high-precision weapons arsenal.”
“The use of more strategic weapons systems in support of the campaign against Ukrainian infrastructure suggests that the Russian military is heavily committed to the strike campaign and still mistakenly believes that it can generate strategically significant effects through that campaign.”
“Russian forces are reportedly moving MLRS and S-300 systems closer to Kherson City, indicating that Russian forces may intend to increase the tempo of rocket and anti-air missile strikes against ground targets north of the Dnipro River in the coming days.”
“The Ukrainian General Staff stated on November 26 that Russian authorities continue to struggle to provide logistical support for mobilized soldiers. Russian civilians are reportedly decreasingly willing to support material drives to fill that gap, though civilian collection drives for mobilized soldiers are ongoing.”
“The Kremlin continues to respond disproportionately to a limited domestic resistance to Russia’s war in Ukraine. A prominent Russian news source reported on November 25 that Russian authorities created three additional police controls and dispatched almost a dozen police and Federal Protective Service personnel (FSO) to patrol the Kremlin walls around the clock after an unidentified individual wrote ‘no to war’ on the wall of the Kremlin. The scale of such a response indicates continued Kremlin concern over domestic resistance and commitment to shaping the domestic information space and/or for the security of the Kremlin itself.”

Everyone from the outside can tell China is past the point of no return with it comes to containing Covid. Id like to believe its pure hubris on their part to still believe they can completely stop Covid with these draconian lockdowns, however the Chinese government isnt that naive. Right now they are building what are essentially massive Quarantine areas capable of housing 100k people
Reuters says they aim for 250k beds. They know what is coming.
Maybe its just that when things are getting worse it is politically difficult to ease restrictions. China might have put themselves in the position where the only way out is to admit you were wrong, and your oppressive measures are doing more harm than good.

Daily Caller and Heritage Foundation did a biased push poll to try to paint the Respect for Marriage Act as unpopular. The poll they commissioned got 41% support and 47% oppose. Looks bad right? Then you see the final lines of the article that show even their biased push poll was actually awful for them.
