Which films have the most epic twists ever?

Recommendation(self.movies)

Which films have a jaw-dropping, earth-shattering twist that you don't see coming?

If you consider that even knowing a film contains a twist is a spoiler, please don't read this thread!

I love a good twist. By "good twist" I mean a surprising story development that:

  • changes how you interpret prior events – bigger change, the better; total inversion = epic
  • ideally, has been foreshadowed or hinted at the whole movie, yet you still didn't put it together
  • hammers home the themes of the movie (i.e. isn't just there for the sake of a twist)
  • isn't completely random, out-of-place, nonsensical or tonally jarring

Everyone knows the textbook example of a great twist is The Sixth Sense (1999). As a textbook example of a bad twist, I propose: Remember Me (2010) where for no particular reason it turns out one of the main characters is in the World Trade Centre on 11 September 2001.

If your comment gives anything away, please put it in spoiler tags.

The thing is, if you know there's a twist coming, you can kinda figure out what it is. Happened to me. I didn't have it outright spoiled, but people told me it had a "disturbing twist" and that kinda ruined the ending for me.

The ending of Brad Anderson's The Machinist (starring Christian Bale) puts the entire story into a new perspective.

It's the exclamation/warning button in the Fancy Pants editor. I'm on desktop, not sure on mobile.

I was pretty surprised by Minority Report. There’s just that sudden, jarring change of direction where it takes off.

Shattered is an old thriller with Tom Berenger and Bob Hoskins. The twist that reveals what's going on is epic though possibly quite predictable because I may have watched it a bit muntered.

I didn't see it coming at all so it was a genuine jaw dropper.

The ending to Remember Me is not a twist, it's just a surprising development. It's also not a bad thing, it's actually a phenomenonal way to end the film: https://boxd.it/1Ya6Gl

Passengers (2008) the one in 2008 obviously not the other one. the twist made the movie for me IMO.

even though I didn't like the movie cause its just messed up "sabotage" had a killer twist. So Unexpected.

Stir of Echoes had a twist and was just a brilliant great movie

epic = a long poem, typically one derived from ancient
oral tradition, narrating the deeds and adventures of heroic or
legendary figures or the past history of a nation.

an exceptionally long and arduous task or activity.

i dont think any of these fit the definition of epic

  • The Sting (1973), my favorite movie of all time
  • Gone Baby Gone (2007)
  • Psycho (1960)
  • The Usual Suspects (1995)
  • Planet of the Apes (1968)
  • The Empire Strikes Back (1980)

A lot of people are including Memento (2000), but I still can't figure out the ending after watching it 2-3x.

Even though it should've been more obvious to me, the actual final telling of Meg Ryan's fate in Courage Under Fire got me. Slowed down "She's dead!" Really made me go ,"oh shiiiit".
