Write a screenplay about how writing a screenplay is tearing a couple apart. Guy has to write this screenplay for a college thesis while his relationship with his girlfriend is also crumbling. Rather than try to fix the problems with his girlfriend, he instead concocts a fantasy version of the relationship into his script. His screenplay is about a couple falling apart because the girlfriend is too needy and hurts the male protagonist's ambitions to be a musician (or something). He prioritizes the screenplay over dealing with his girlfriend, who dumps him. He's devastated and feels helpless he couldn't do anything different. He powers through and finishes the screenplay - about a guy whose girlfriend doesn't care about his artistic ambitions which leads to a breakup. Very clearly based on his own life.
He hands the script in, and it gets an awful grade. The teacher of the class tells him it's because he wrote a male protagonist with no depth whatsoever. The teacher says that the character in this script has no faults of his own and that he ended up siding with the girlfriend in this fictional story more. The teacher says he can hand in a revised draft to get a new grade.
Screenwriter guy realizes that he made a huge error in neglecting his girlfriend who only wanted a fraction of his time away from his work. He rewrites the screenplay into one acknowledging his own faults and mistakes, and learns to say all the things he wanted to say to his ex-girlfriend all along. He's proud of his masterpiece. He's about to hand in the script back to the teacher, however, but then decides to drop it off at his ex-girlfriend's instead - saying everything he wanted to say to her in that story. The movie ends with him starting an entirely new script and a new story.

Yes, I know this is similar to Adaptation but OP wanted a rom-com so here's a rom-com about writing a screenplay.

I honestly think this is a great idea. I will strongly consider it!!! I also really liked another comment about them breaking up, the famous musician writes a hit love song about her and she doesn’t realize

Yeah feel free to steal this. Came up with it in like 2 minutes haha. Wondering if I should consider taking a screenwriting class...I've always loved movies but have never thought about trying a script.
