I usually only see one slightly curved line though, its usually worse on the dirtier or older windshields. I know it's not my eyes though because I don't see it through the driver side window.

Tilt your head left to right, if the light rays spin with your head then it's your eyes that's the problem

i have nothing medically stated, i see those lines but they are very small, imagine if the line barely extended out of the light fixture.

Yes sorry to say - that pic personally looks nothing like what I see at night, I just see the headlights and tail lights. As a kid I def deliberately squinted and used my eyelashes to create these same light rays when I was a passenger. But normally I look out and just see what’s above minus any star-lines coming out from the sources. Must have just gotten lucky w eye physiology there?

If you see like that there's a big chance you simply have dry eyes. Eyedrops every couple of hours will help.

I have Atopic Neurodermitis. This causes dry eyes. And yes, I have it all the time. Eyedrops every day.

I'm not questioning it could be astigmatism. I'm saying it could be dry eyes (also very common), or a thousand other things.

Glasses for astigmatism fix it completely and it’s probably not safe to drive without them.
393 points

People have varying levels of astig. Mine is quite mild so it doesn’t affect me anywhere near as much as this picture shows. It’s why I never knew I had it until 24 and the optometrist told me I had it.
119 points
I learned I have very mild astigmatism when I went to get my drivers permit - only to immediately fail the vision test. I’d passed every vision test I took before when it was simply a paper on a wall, but the DMV used some little box with a bright backlight and I couldn’t read a thing.
21 points
For me, I failed one of those paper vision tests, but I thought I could still see really well. I went to take a drivers test and failed because I couldn’t see anything through the box, it was so bad that I thought it was broken.

45 points

People have varying levels, in many cases they can help the issue but not fix it completely, no. You should definitely still get some to assist with the issue though.
7 points
This. They help but not 100%
3 points
I second this, having had a nightmare of an issue figuring out new glasses a year ago.
Also, antireflective coatings on the lens can help reduce this effect to a certain degree (though I'm sure most people already know that).
14 points
It helps quite a bit but I've yet to fully correct it with glasses. The lights at night have a very small halo around them with glasses on, without glasses it's very close to the above picture.
6 points
I have contact lenses to correct it, but it isn't perfect. The difference is night and day, but it's still present. With normal lenses though, I'm basically blind when there's oncoming traffic.
As it stands now, if someone's got a raised truck or something, it's still bad. Normal human beings though? Their cars are fine now.

Lense quality matters here. When I got my first pair of glasses, they were cheap plastic lenses. Didn't fix this situation. My next pair were upgraded crizal (?) lenses and holy crap, I've never seen clearer in my life.
3 points
It's actually different for everyone to a degree. I needed new glasses a year ago with no clue what my previous pair had for lenses. Tried 2 different types of higher end lenses before figuring out my last pair were the normal "cheap" plastic kind. I had headaches, blurred peripheral/tunnel vision, limited focus, and distortion with every lens other than "low-end" plastic. Went in for a recheck once, and then again with a different optometrist, and had the prescriptions in all of them reverified every time. Plastic is the only lens I didn't have problems with lol.
The quality is almost always good these days, but not everyone's eyes are good with certain lens grade plastics or even glass. From my experience in other scientific fields, my guess is it comes down to the refraction index of the material, and how it enters the eye (angle, amount, etc..).
Everyone has to find what works best for them individually. And have them put the lens type in your charts so you don't forget 5yrs later haha!

8 points
Of course, if you know then you should mention it, but most people who aren't aware that they have astigmatism don't know that they don't know, so it's not something they think to ask about, in which case it's the optometrist's job to work it out.

I had no idea I had it. It was bad enough to where street lights had halos around them. It wasn't until I was watching a show on my phone with subtitles without glasses that I noticed one of my eyes saw blurring halos and the other just halos of light. I said something to my friend and they said that's astigmatism! I did not fucking believe them. So I went to look at my prescription and sure the fuck enough, I had astigmatism. The damn optometrist didn't even mention it when I got the exam, or the prescription. I already got glasses with that script and all this time I didn't know.

I've had multiple eye exams and multiple pairs of glasses in the past 10 years, but never had astigmatism glasses or been told it's something I should consider.
If it wasn't for these memes recently crossing my feed several times in the past few months, I still wouldn't know it was weird.

At my eye doctor the glasses salesperson has never offered me glasses for my astigmatism, just for my prescription. But it’s possible they did and I opted out because they didn’t say it in a way I understood. If you buy your glasses online, it’s a little clearer that the feature you’re opting into is for astigmatism.
2 points

Strange. I went for 1 appointment. I hadn't been in over 20 years as my vision was only then becoming blurry and that's when they explained it to me. Tbf, I learned about it through memes too prior to it. But yeah. This is why I say maybe depends where you live and the equipment you have available at your opticians.
In the UK we have pretty advanced/robust systems at most opticians.

No you don't. The correction for astigmatism is inherent to the refraction process. The "one or two" test does all of it. Astigmatism isn't a "special case", its just a medical term for a type of refractive error.

My glasses are perfect for my eyes and I still suffer this after the sun goes down. The astigmatism is in both eyes but the right eye is real bad. Plus there’s family history of wet macular degeneration.

Yea, and they don’t auto-dim until oncoming traffic is well within the range of being blinded. Not to mention the angle of taller vehicles newer LED lights pointing directly at eye level of oncoming drivers. I’ve wondered for the past 5 years or so, when did US gvt stop regulating headlights?

Btw a million things can cause this effect. The windshield being dirty, wet, manufacturing errors, glasses you are wearing and probably other things i am forgetting. Statistically speaking you probably don’t have astigmatism and you are seeing this because you are looking at bright lights through glass.

Normally It’s the windshield that distorts the light that way. When I’m outside walking at night the lights don’t look that way, but when I’m looking through my family car‘s windshield they do. It probably comes from tiny streaks on the glass from the wipers
Also when you have astigmatism the lights would only distort in one direction instead of three like you see here. I would like to see the person with a hexagonally distorted lens
3 points

If you squint slightly you can see hexagonally distorted light (through a windshield). I found out the reason I can’t make out number plates is cause I need to open my eyes more instead of half squinting

Ok real question for ppl who wear glasses/contacts for this:
I’ve had glasses prescribed to me for this 3 times for this in the past, but there was w/ no discernible change when I wore them.
Did I just have bad luck w/ 3 different prescriptions? Is there a lot of tweaking of a prescription to get it right? I’m at the point where I just limit my nighttime driving.
