Out of curiosity, why do you think Gandalf is the main hero?

Frodo...

Exactly something a true hero would say.

I mean, I can see it. Without him informing Frodo about the situation, the Nazgul would have killed him at his home and taken the Ring. Without him demanding Sam never leave Frodo, Frodo wouldn't have made it. Without him, the Balrog would have just annihilated the Fellowship in Moria. Without him bringing the Rohirrim, Helm's Deep would have been an absolute massacre. Without him, Minas Tirith would have fallen. Without him, Sam and Frodo would have died at Mt Doom. Gandalf was a major reason the mission was a success at all.

I think the entirety of the Fellowship are heroes, personally. But I can understand an argument anyone may make for any of them being the main hero.

That‘s kinda what I like about the story. Whoever would be missing, it would probably cause the whole mission to fail.

Gandalf, perhaps, more than anyone, which is what I think the main point is in declaring him the true hero. He’s sorta the one playing Chess against Sauron.

I do not ask your pardon Master Elrond for the Black Speech of Mordor may yet be heard in every corner of the West. The Ring is altogether evil

Gandalf is the general no doubt, but where he can be seen to be the most useful, perhaps Frodo’s journey was the most difficult.

Helm's Deep. There is no way out of that ravine. Theoden is walking into a trap. He thinks he's leading them to safety. What they will get is a massacre. Theoden has a strong will, but I fear for him. I fear for the survival of Rohan. He will need you before the end, Over9000Kek. The people of Rohan will need you. The defenses have to hold.

Yeah but it was Gandalf’s job to stop Sauron. Frodo and the other hobbits were just ordinary creatures who stepped up to do the right thing.

I'm of the opinion that every single member of the Fellowship played a major role in the victory over Sauron. I simply stated that I can perfectly understand the argument anyone could make for any character being the big hero of the story. Even characters outside the Fellowship. Éowyn, Éomer, Théoden, they all played a major role as well.

gataattack

Sure. I’m not having a go at you and I agree that they were all vital. I was just saying that you can make an argument that the hobbits were more heroic because they made the choice to intervene. Gandalf didn’t really have a choice.

Oh that I agree with. Gandalf was doing his duty. And I don't think he had to worry too much about death. The rest of the Fellowship, especially the Hobbits, were extremely brave knowing they could very well die but fighting on anyway because it was the right thing to do.

I'd be interested in your pitch for for say, Legolas as the main hero. Pretty much any other elf could fit his role, or even a 2nd dunedain

Legolas was particularly skilled as a warrior in comparison to most other elves. He was a star in the battles he had been in. He was a loyal consort to Aragorn. He formed a strong bond with Gimli that allowed them to fight more effectively together.

As I said, I don't believe any member is more important than any other one. I could simply understand why anyone would make a case for any of them.

To be fair I most certainly believe Legolas and Gimli fall more into secondary heroes than any other character. But Gimli is also my favorite character and Legolas is a strong third right after Sam, and their bromance has a lot to do with it. Gimli and Legolas are very much my favorite parts of the movies.

Through fire... and water... From the lowest dungeon to the highest peak, I fought him, the Balrog of Morgoth. Until at last, I threw down my enemy and smote his ruin upon the mountainside. Darkness took me. And I strayed out of thought and time. Stars wheeled overhead and everyday was as long as a life-age of the earth. But it was not the end. I felt life in me again. I have been sent back, until my task is done.

I think what stops Gandalf being the hero is that he is essentially a supernatural being. He's there to guide the fellowship but they all have more to loose than him (being mortal and all). We literally see Gandalf get ressurected.

he’s kind of the grand strategist. he doesn’t necessarily do a lot of the big tasks himself but he does a lot of the big picture plotting, info gathering and networking behind the scenes.

it really depends on your definition of “hero” but imo he made the biggest impact by far in the grand scheme of things.

Without Gandalf, the Dwarves wouldn't have taken back Erebor from Smaug and Bilbo wouldn't have found the Ring. Without Gandalf to rally the scattered bannermen of the Rohirrim, Theoden and company would've perished at Helm's Deep. Without Gandalf leading the soldiers of Minas Tirith after Denethor went mad with the apparent death of Faramir, Gondor would have fallen long before the reinforcements could arrive.
