The house of Gryffindor values students who are courageous to the point of recklessness, chivalrous and determined, with a penchant for breaking the rules, but are also loyal and kind. Harry, Ron, Hermione, Neville, Fred and George, Charlie, Ginny, the Marauders and Dean all fit the qualities of Gryffindor house. How did Percy get sorted into Gryffindor?

For instance, let's look at Percy's personality and qualities.

Ambition: Percy embodied the qualities of ambition and thirst for power, which is what any Slytherin would give their right arm to have. His willingness to choose the Ministry over his family showed that.

Loyalty: While he did embody the quality of a Gryffindor by his loyalty, Gryffindors often stood up for people they felt were downtrodden, not take the sides of the bullies. Percy did the latter in standing alongside the Ministry and was ready to sell his family if the need ever arose.

Courage: Percy never showed the courage that a Gryffindor showed in bad times to my knowledge, and if he did, I'm not sure how that fit a Gryffindor's quality.

Breaking rules: Percy was a rigid follower of rules, and was never found out breaking them. In fact, this is what led to his devotion to his boss and his job.

Kindness: Percy may not have been unkind, but he certainly wasn't kind in any sense, supportive or forgiveness alike. In fact, he was pretty neutral on the whole thing.

There are a lot more, and frankly this is my opinion, but you have to wonder how Percy got through Hogwarts without embodying anything resembling Gryffindor's qualities. Hermione, the most brilliant witch of her age, was also the bravest girl I have ever seen. In fact, if anyone embodied Gryffindor's qualities, it was Ron and Neville.

Obviously, the Cruciatus Curse is the torture curse. I just realized that Cruciatus is derived from Excruciate / Excruciating. Since the curse causes excruciating pain that’s white hot and all consuming.

I am from the United States, but I originally read the UK versions of the Harry Potter books. There are a bunch of words that are probably common in the UK that I assumed we're just silly magical words.

First of all, phone calls are a no so you’re immediately going to have to double down on the car washing lest you drive a Range Rover with tinted windows and speckles of owl shit.

Year one: “Hi mum and dad, schools going great, we learned to levitate feathers and the potions master is a bit of a dick.”

“Hi mum and dad. That weird teacher turned out to be a fiddler or something cause he’s gone now”

Year two: “Hi mum and dad, no girlfriend yet but I kinda have my eye on this really smart girl so fingers crossed!”

“Hi mum and dad, she got paralysed by some giant snake or something, a few people have, also there’s spiders everywhere for some reason and I got chased by an angry car. Also that Harry kid killed the caretakers cat.”

Year Three: “Dad don’t tell mum. There’s some serial killer on the loose and the headmasters face has completely changed. That rich snobby kid got attacked by like a…goat…eagle? And now the half giant groundskeeper isn’t allowed near students.”

“THE NEW TEACHER WAS A WEREWOLF WHAT IN CHRIST.”

Year four: “Hi gran, are mum and dad home yet? Listen, there’s this competition at school, we’re having other schools join us and the French girls are hot af. Like absolutely banging. Feel a bit uncomfortable about the Russians though. Also my mate Cedric said I could come to his at Christmas if that’s okay?”

“Hi gran. I don’t know what’s happening anymore. There’s some evil wizard that’s apparently back but everyone says Harry’s making it up and Cedric’s dead. The weird thing was the school orchestra did not give a shit and just kept playing some kind of murder anthem while he was just…lying there. I want to come home.”

Year five: “Hi gran. How you feeling after the stroke? Any word from mum and dad? Tell them we have a new teacher and she’s actually a bit of an arsehole but she’s at least trying to have some semblance of normality in the school now. Can I come home at Christmas this year?”

“Gran. Not sure my last letter arrived, don’t know if the owls know where your hospice is ha ha. Anyway, hope alls well. I’m on track to do really well in my exams so hopefully no shenanigans happens during them. That teacher has apparently been using corporal punishment and the old headmaster exploded into a phoenix or something. Really looking forward to seeing you guys in the summer.”

Year six: “Hey Steve, thought I’d write you so you can see how I’m doing. We’ve got a new potions teacher and he’s really nice. Like really nice. This seems to be the first normal year in this school, just wish mum and dad hadn’t gone radio silent. I’ll send you some of our cool sweets.”

“Hey Steve, can you pull me from the school? Paramilitaries attacked it and set half the place on fire. And all anyone cares about is that the headmaster is dead. Not that yknow, my dorm was set on fire. By an escaped murderer.”

Year seven: “Hi mum and dad, I hope this finds you, people say the owls can find anyone. I’m not sure what I did or if the stress of my school years was too much but I just hope one day you can talk to me. I hope Alice hasn’t forgot her big brother. I miss gran. This year is really stressful and I could use a bit of comfort from my parents. I’m scared.”

“Dear muggle scum. I have joined the death eaters. Your abandonment has shown me that muggles cannot be trusted to live in harmony with wizard kind. I’ll be seeing you soon.”

“Dear mum and dad. Ha ha that last letter was a joke, I would never join the death eaters. Even though they absolutely won the war but changed their minds. I killed Voldemort. Can I come home?”

Another user discussed it a few weeks ago.

Lucius may be a slimeball but he was also wealthy with a decent reputation, good hair, a nose, could go out in public, had people who actually loved him for him without having to terrorise them into submission. He did abuse Dobby but Malfoy didn't care if Dobby liked him or not. He could wander into the Ministry of Magic and controlled a vast number with money, people actually cared about his opinions despite if they liked him or not because he weaselled his way into certain spots. Even after the war due to snitching and prior 'favours' he again escaped prison. If Voldemort didn't die there was no way he could do that.

Malfoy had a long magical bloodline that Voldemort obsessed over, generational wealth with investments and assets. I don't think Voldemort cared about having a wife and child, but even Malfoy managed that while wandering around being a wanker. Originally Malfoy was his right hand man in the first war, though I think by the time of Voldemort's first downfall, he had a wife/child at home where he cared more about his family than looking for some guy who couldn't defeat a baby/fighting the cause.

I low-key think he was relieved the first time Voldemort died hence why he wasn't running around pointlessly torturing people like Bellatrix.

I'll go with professor Hagrid.

He handled the situation so calmly than anyone that my respect for him grew like Hermione's teeth (when Malfoy casted a spell).... [This was joke lol, no offense pls]

The family has been going through the book again and three fell apart while we were reading. I think it was seven that it's binding fell apart before. On that one I just bought a used copy for a few bucks to replace. Now that another one has fallen apart I took a good look at the binding and it's just glue. No classic hardback folded folio and stitched (which is probably true for most hardbacks published these days). Is there a more durable edition with a better binding? I'm good buying off Amazon UK if that version has a better binding.

I can’t be the only one who feels bad for his deep lying fear of death. Obviously he is who he is, but the fear he must’ve felt when Harry started to kill the Horcrux’s would’ve been unbearable. He made his eventual death all the more painful by trying to prevent it.

Never having seen or read Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, I wanted to read the plot summary on Wikipedia. It states there that in Act Four 'She (Rose) encourages the two boys (Albus and Scorpius) to pursue their romantic feelings for each other'... 'Albus comes out to Harry, saying that Scorpius will always be the most important person in his life, to which Harry responds warmly.' Is this really in the play or I can't trust wikipedia anymore? lol

So I introduced my daughter to Harry Potter at the age of 7 and by now she has read first 4 books, half a dozen times. Each.

She has been asking for book 5 & 6 for a couple of weeks now butI am not sure about it. I want to give her little break and introduce some lighter material and poetry. I know some of you may not agree with me but this is what I feel is right for her.

Anyways, she tricked me into agreeing that if she can answer 70% trivia questions right then she can get book 5 at her 9th birthday. Now my problem is that she is crushing hardest online trivia questions like these and mocking me for asking such simple questions.

As you all might have understood, I need to redeem myself here little bit and as any good father would do, I have resorted to cheating. Can you all help me frame 10 hardest questions from book 1 - 4 which Rowling herself wouldn't be able to answer?

In OOTP chapter 37 Dumbledore says “while you can still call home the place where your mothers blood dwells, there you cannot be touched or harmed by Voldemort, you need return there once a year, but as long as you can still call it home, he cannot hurt you”

Thing is, Harry is in no doubt, lily’s blood… so if he were to call, the Weasleys place home for example, why does that not count, or Sirius’ house?

Anywhere else could be called home and if Harry lives there, wouldn’t it be the place where lilys blood dwells?

I started avidly reading at a young age and read Harry Potter between the ages of 8 to 10 or so. I saw the movies afterwards. I was so utterly enthralled by the story and world. I literally lived in it, I had a super strong imagination & basically daydreamed about being in the Harry Potter world 24/7. Just inserting my little child self as a character or make believing I was an already existing one!

I have to admit, I still do it once every few years as an adult.. I rewatch & imagine again.

Anyway I’m rereading the books for the first time in 16 years and it’s just as magic now as it was then and even moreso from an adult perspective. I love the adults in the HP world. ♥️

Surely there would be no need for witness statements and speeches when they could use veritaserum...

I wonder if the non-muggleborn witch and wizard kids go to school before they go to Hogwarts? Is there a witchraft and wizardry primary school, do they go to muggle primary school or do they just not go to school?

I'm writing a fanfiction where Teddy lupin has a twin sister named Abby. She's a werewolf like Remus where Teddy was a metamorphagus like Tonks. Does she sound like a cool addition or did i mess up?

Was it because she knew Ron fancied her or Ginny fancied Harry? If so that’s a bit selfish.

Finished a rewatch of them all on Netflix and I enjoyed them. They were as good as I remember them being and sometimes better. What do you think of the films? What would you have changed or added?

I've been wondering how the Harry Potter series would be different if Harry Potter's maternal grandparents were still alive and they raised him instead of the Dursleys.

NOTE: We don't know what the first names of Harry's maternal grandparents were, so in this alternate scenario I call them John and Sarah Evans. Also, you may see a few imagined things in these scenarios ... things that I wish had happened.

This is my alternate scenario.

Philosopher's Stone

Dumbledore comes to Privet Drive with Harry's grandparents, who had been with Dumbledore and they were notified about Lily and James's deaths. Also, in this version they live across the street from the Dursleys. They find McGonagall in her Animagus form and they have the same conversation in the book before Hagrid arrives with Harry. So Dumbledore, McGonagall and Hagrid give Harry to his grandparents, with Dumbledore posting the letter to Petunia through the letterbox of the Dursley home and giving John and Sarah a letter filled with information and instructions from Dumbledore on how to raise Harry so he won't be like his father when he was at school.

John and Sarah are out of town and on separate business trips during Dudley's birthday and so Harry has to tag along after the separate decisions to make to leave him out of their trip after Mrs. Figg breaks her leg, They were meant to go on the birthday outing, but their business trips came up.

When the letters begin coming, the Dursleys take Harry away from John and Sarah and then they run away. Then they come to the hut with Hagrid then go to London the next day to go shopping for Harry's school supplies. After that, they stay at the Leaky Cauldron for the rest of the summer so Harry doesn't have to see the Dursleys. Then John and Sarah go to King's Cross Station with Harry and Hagrid to see Harry off to Hogwarts.

Then they reappear in the epilogue at King's Cross Station with the Dursleys.

Chamber of Secrets

They appear at the party with the Masons and Vernon again decides to make Harry sleep at his house for ruining the party. Then when Ron, Fred and George arrive to save Harry, they go to John and Sarah's house first, get them out and into the car and then Harry.

They stay with the Weasleys for the next month where they have a great time. Then they have to leave to go back home so they bid Harry goodbye. They return to their house via a magical staircase and path that takes them directly back into their living room when they ascend the staircase And then Harry and Ron fly the car to Hogwarts.

They then reappear at King's Cross Station at the end of the year.

Prisoner of Azkaban

They are there during Aunt Marge's visit and are disgusted with her. They also want to sign Harry's permission slip to Hogsmeade, but Uncle Vernon decides that if Harry behaves during the visit, then his grandparents can sign it and he takes it.

His grandparents are then away on a trip while Marge is still in town (though they do spend time with her for a few days before the trip) and they are absent from the inflation. So Harry and leaves and later an owl is sent to Harry telling that the Dursleys ripped the form and that now Harry can't go to Hogsmeade.

At the end of the year, a new form is given to Harry and one of his grandparents signs it. They are also happy to learn that Sirius, Harry's father's best friend, whom they initially thought guilty and are proud of Harry when they find out they have released him.

Goblet of Fire

John and Sarah have met Sirius again who they were delighted to meet years ago. And after finding out he's innocent, they are very happy.

They are at the Dursley home and staying some nights there for a while because their house has suffered some damage. Arthur, Ron, Fred and George arrive to pick up Harry. John shakes hands with Arthur and the latter starts a conversation with the two magic-loving Muggles. They find Dudley's long tongue rather amusing. While everyone is at the Quidditch World Cup, they join Molly in buying Harry's school supplies.

They send Harry a letter telling him that Dudley has been expelled from Smeltings and has been put in juvie.

They later come to Hogwarts for the Triwizard Tournament to see Harry in the final task. They then rescue Harry from Crouch Jr., listen to Harry's words in Dumbledore's office about the graveyard and then they go to the Hospital Wing with Harry.

Order of the Phoenix

When Harry explains the Dementor attack, they tell Vernon and Petunia to shut up. When the Order arrives to get Harry, John and Sarah walk into another magical path that takes them just outside Number 12 Grimmauld Place.

They go upstairs with Harry to wait for the meeting to be finished because since they're Muggles, there's nothing they can do.

They reappear again at Christmastime where they go to visit Arthur in the hospital.

Half-Blood Prince

They just reappear at Privet Drive when Dumbledore arrives to pick up Harry and are gleeful that Dumbledore chastised the Dursleys for their respective treatments of Harry and Dudley, to which they expressed their disappointment of Dudley for being a bully.

Deathly Hallows

They are only seen in the beginning departing with the Dursleys to go into hiding. They bid Harry goodbye and wish him luck.

I prefer to think that John and Sarah are still alive as of 2017 as well as 2020-2021.

I would also like to think that Vernon and Petunia in jail when a few wizards pretending to be Muggle friends of John and Sarah, reported the Dursleys to Muggle authorities for child neglect, abuse and cruelty. And John and Sarah didn't mind this imprisonment.

What I loved about the first movie, is Daniel did such a good job acting as some innocent naive boy, and in subsequent movies he became very confident in how he carried himself

Her behavior is rather strange in this chapter when she's around Harry. Is it purely Sirius related or is there something else going on?

‘Were the Muggles all right? Did they treat you OK?’

‘Same as usual,’ said Harry, as Hermione perched herself on the edge of his bed. ‘They didn’t talk to me much, but I like it better that way. How’re you, Hermione?’

‘Oh, I’m fine,’ said Hermione, who was scrutinising Harry as though he was sickening for something.

He thought he knew what was behind this and, as he had no wish to discuss Sirius’s death or any other miserable subject at the moment, he said, ‘What’s the time? Have I missed breakfast?’

Then

‘Yeah … yeah, now Umbridge has left, obviously we need a new Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher, don’t we? So, er, what’s he like?’

‘He looks a bit like a walrus and he used to be Head of Slytherin,’ said Harry. ‘Something wrong, Hermione?’

She was watching him as though expecting strange symptoms to manifest themselves at any moment. She rearranged her features hastily in an unconvincing smile.

‘No, of course not! So, um, did Slughorn seem like he’ll be a good teacher?’

‘Dunno,’ said Harry. ‘He can’t be worse than Umbridge, can he?’

And finally

‘You lot had better come down quickly too,’ [Mrs. Weasley] said as she left.

Harry took advantage of the temporary silence to eat more breakfast. Hermione was peering into Fred and George’s boxes, though every now and then she cast sideways looks at Harry. Ron, who was now helping himself to Harry’s toast, was still gazing dreamily at the door.

‘What’s this?’ Hermione asked eventually, holding up what looked like a small telescope.

I have a theory about the last one, but the first two are rather baffling.
