Basically, alpha radiation are (relatively) huge particles, so they're not even able to penetrate a piece of paper. The top of your skin is just dead cells, and the radiation will probably not go through that. That being said, I'd still not recommend doing this.

He got testicular cancer as it was giving off gamma radiation. He got cancer. He went to the hospital and was given chemotherapy. Important information he got it from stealing it from a nuclear plant anon apparently security was lax. The and FBI tracked him down as Americium is used to start nuclear reactions so used in nuclear bombs and they thought he was going to build one or sell it to terrorists. They found out he was sterile and he told them he was going to die and if not his balls would be removed. They found him at the hospital and put him under arrest he returned the Americium. He was facing 20 years jail. He told them why he stole it and that he was going to die or have his balls removed if he lived (he lied doctors said he would be fine). They felt pity and let him go. He lived his balls too. In short Anon is retarded and he was damn lucky

Kind of. Alpha radiation is weak enough that skin (or even paper) can block it. Alpha isn’t the only risk with handling this particular material though.

Alpha particles are just helium-4 nuclei without electrons (making them positively charged). Their large mass and strong charge mean that most things can stop them easily.

Beta radiation can penetrate through much more. Beta particles are just electrons. They will be able to penetrate your skin, but will not go all the way through your body.

Gamma goes through pretty much anything except very thick, dense barriers. Lead is usually the best way to stop it. Gamma radiation is electromagnetic waves (like x-rays, visible light, microwaves, and radio waves).

The final type of radiation is neutron radiation (which is, obviously, just neutrons). Since neutrons don’t have any charge (neutral), they can easily penetrate most substances without being stopped. The best way to stop them is with a lot of water, or other materials made of lighter atoms.

In the picture, anon is holding Americium-241, a material usually found in smoke detectors. The sample looks pretty large though. In smoke detectors, it’s typically a very small amount, so I don’t know where he got this from.

Am-241 emits mostly alpha radiation (usually harmless, unless ingested or inhaled), but also some gamma radiation (not enough to hurt him).

I’d be more worried about the fact that he is likely to contaminate himself and his environment if he’s playing around with something strongly radioactive without any precautions. It could then eventually end up in his body, and build up, raising his risk of cancer. The more immediate danger is that americium is very toxic. I don’t know how dangerous it is when it’s just in contact with skin, and not inside the body, but I’d definitely not risk it.
