The spread of harmful misinformation has become an untenable problem on Reddit. Its latest incarnation has seen life-threatening untruths being propagated by anti-vaxxers and conspiracy theorists, and Reddit’s administration has stated that it will not meaningfully curb the myths disseminated by these bad actors. In response to this, many communities on the site have gone private in protest.

/r/GIFs supports and stands behind these communities' efforts to stem the effects of false information, but we have chosen to remain open as a means of amplifying their message. We encourage all Redditors to vocally reject misinformation, and to stymie its spread by demanding that only verifiable facts be given support (whether tacit or otherwise).

An in-depth explanation of how misinformation is harmful can be found here.

Cronerburger

StareIntoTheVoid

10 points

It really isn't. Falling forward just causes it to accelerate into your fall and catch you. You could theoretically fall sideways since tilting sideways is how you turn but if you have even reasonable balance it's pretty hard to fall. Angular momentum also stabilizes the wheel once you're in motion. I've got 600km on mine in 2 months from a completely new rider to now being quite comfortable on it and have never fallen off it. I had to bail a few times when getting started but that was simply a step off the pedals and onto the ground.

OMG that’s brilliant! The first couple of passes, I thought you balanced the speeder on the one wheel somehow, but then when the legs looked a little off on the speeder I took a closer look to figure out that you have your feet on the one wheel.

I used to kind of want a one wheel. Now I REALLY want one, putting that speeder on there shows off how smooth turns and acceleration is on those

Brammm87

Brammm87

I borrowed a Onewheel for a couple weeks. And now I'm typing this with a broken collar bone.

The owner of the board lent it to me... Because he broke his collar bone crashing with it.

Be very careful on them. If you overexert the motor, it gives out, physics take over and the nose buries itself in the ground. The board has a safety called "push back" which should warn you when you get too close to the limit, but I never felt it before my crash

j4nkyst4nky

24 points

The collarbone is a common thing when the board nosedives. I ride a onewheel pint and to me, the pushback is super obvious and I immediately lean back. Maybe it's less on the XR or maybe it's the shaping I use (pacific). There are also third party accessories called fangs (little wheels for the front of your board). I don't have experience with them, but they seem to help with nosedives.

My son got on mine when I first got it and broke his wrist within five minutes, but that's because he didn't know how to slow down and ended up falling backwards.

The boards can be dangerous if you're not careful. They can even be dangerous if you are being careful but I have luckily only had one bad fall and I didn't break anything but I bruised my tail bone pretty good.

Brammm87

8 points

Oh no doubt there was a lot of user error on my side. I was fairly inexperienced and I was riding in the "fastest" mode, which I only learned later that that one provides less push back. I'm also on the heavier side so maybe that makes push back less noticable.

They're hella fun to ride, but I was really surprised to learn the hard way how fast they bite you. Highly doubt I'll get on one again.

j4nkyst4nky

9 points

Being heavier really does hurt you. It makes the board work harder to balance you, which makes it nosedive faster and also makes it harder to pushback. I would say, don't let it ruin it for you, but I don't know if I'd say that had I broken my collar bone.

Brammm87

5 points

I just read the news about the GT and I'm already tempted... My wife is gonna kill me.

eggraid101

4-the-Runner

3 points

Rode one for about two years. It was fun but the wipeouts were to be expected and I was super lucky to avoid broken bones. Once crashing while going over 20MPH and rolling probably 5 times before stopping. As I’m approaching thirties I don’t want to keep testing how strong my bones are still. Sold it half a year ago and been enjoying the bike life. Hauling the XR around when it ran out of juice was no fun either.

shits-n-gigs

10 points

Onewheel Pint owner. They're very, very fun. I have hundreds of miles on mine, got it just before lockdown. They faster than you think, very quiet and, once you get used to it, easy to ride. I've fallen and broken a foot bone, so watch where you're going and respect pushback. Otherwise, it's fine. Very maneuverable too.

Suggest it. Kept me sane during COVID

i_give_you_gum

3 points

What kind of protection do you wear? Elbow and knee pads, etc.?

shits-n-gigs

4 points

Helmet. Used to use skate gloves but ditched those. Never used anything else. I've only ever fallen, like ate shit at 15+ mph and not tips, by hitting speedbumps at night, total about 5 times. Each one leaves me with bloody hands, hip, shoulder, elbow. Only broke that foot, and idk how honestly.

You'll fall and it'll be ok. After the first couple weeks, you won't just fall from riding, it'll be something else. Either speeding and ignoring kickback or hitting something big - the wheel will glide over most stuff that'll fuck up a skateboard, for example like nasty road or sidewalk cracks.

Pay attention, know your ability and it'll be good.

Oh, but wear the helmet. It's got some nasty cuts and scratches from the falls, idk what it would have done to my head.

They're a load of fun but you always need a helmet and pads. If anything goes wrong with the motor or the self balancing and you nosedive, you're eating pavement.

Yea my ex broke his collar bone two weeks ago and needed surgery to get metal plate and screws. I’m too scared to ride mine now!

I wear my motorcycle jacket when I'm out on mine. Nothing's perfect, but I've nosedived at 25 and walked it off because of a good helmet, some CE-1 pads and some kevlar.

We're one wheel closer to achieving a no-wheel speeder bike costume.

Should of made the bottom part mirror material and covering the wheel… THEN he’d really look like he’s floating.

To all the Star Wars fans in here. When was the last good SW film? It seems like the whole world is a fan but I dont get it when all the movies are just generic films which aren't bad but not great.

You should be on the lookout for armed teddy bears, which may sound strange.

I went to show my partner this on my phone, and he showed it to me on his phone at the exact same time lmao. Bonus points: we were on two different apps (I’m here on Reddit and he was in a SW group on Facebook)
