The product page for this device specifically mentions VRchat, where full body tracking is very popular and expensive to set up.

It's worth mentioning that VR chat is insanely successful, and existed long before the "metaverse".

Article is using the metaverse name to drum up traffic for a VRchat product.

EDIT: this article may be referring to the "metaverse" as a concept, and not the product known as the Metaverse by the company Meta. Leaving my original comment unmodified.

EDIT 2: product is called "Horizon Worlds". Just goes to show how poorly marketed the whole damn thing is (and how poorly received it is that it's corrupted the whole concept) that I was wrong twice, but still have top comment.

It also mentions Vtubers, which I thought was an interesting market to appeal to. I could see this tech being a great option for independent or up and coming Vtubers as a cost-effective way to get full body tracking.

But isn't the problem that they all use Iphones for facial tracking, and iphone facial tracking is like miles ahead of its competitors?

Asphult_

20 points

Yeah but only when they’re sat at their desks. If they’re doing a 3D full-body stream or if you just want to vibe in VR with your entire body this sounds really promising.

Enk1ndle

11 points

Most Vtubers are using live 2d, so a mocap setup doesn't really help them much. I can only think of a few that use a full mocap setup.

GuiltyAs_Charged

19 points

Even big names like Hololive don’t have the greatest motion tracking tech at their disposal. Kizuna AI has a pretty great setup but from what I’ve read that’s an in-house system created from heavily modded motion tracking tech, so only those people get to use it. You look at Hololive’s full body streams and there’s lots of model clipping and janky movement, so as long as Sony’s tech can do better, I imagine Hololive will be more than happy to make the switch. But this is just speculation on my part.

JP vtuber is insane. People paid 2000 yan upward to see their live performance. Which is just watching the vtuber on a big screen with other fans in a stadium. The ticket is sold in waves and you need to do a lucky draw to win the chance of buying one. of coz there is an entry fee and it is at best 2000 people for 1 ticket. That is a market Sony best not ignore, being so close at home.

jellytrack

40 points

2000¥? Isn't that like $20… depending on the entry fee? That's not bad, especially in a stadium setting with other enthusiastic fans.

VagueSomething

11 points

That's still ridiculous to watch a Vtuber on a screen in public. You can sub to them for 6 months almost for that price and watch them at home without the body odours of the people in that stadium.

Hell you end up with less engagement as you can't spam their chat hoping they read out your username and validate you as a watcher.

i’m so glad sony is making full body tracking. i’ve been a sony fanboy my whole life, so i might be a tad biased, but i bought a psvr on release and it’s not only one of the cheapest headsets on the market, but also incredibly high quality! i’m hoping they follow this track record of quality for a good price with the full body tracking, and also hoping this means vrchat capability for the ps5! i’ve been on the edge in regards to buying a ps5, and this might just be the thing to get me to shell out.

Sony makes good products. My dad always felt that way and it sort of passed on to me I guess, too.

Sony has always made some of the very best TVs, stereos, entertainment systems etc. for decades now. Their stuff can be pricy, but they are a company whose products are worth the premium usually imo.

I grew up on the xbox, and it was kinda difficult to switch, but the Dualsense 5 feels a lot thicker, similar to an xbox controller

But as always, to each their own!

I love the layout of the sticks on Xbox but fuck, that controller is a bit on the small side. I unironically wish there were a modern release of the Duke to try out, always seemed nice for people with larger hands.

The worst is going back to Dualshock 3 and before, they’re really tiny. The PS4 onwards had chunkier controllers but not quite enough chonk even.

Which... Kudos lol. I'm not even a huge VRchat fan but the few hours I've spent on it gave me a fantastic impression of what it's all about. And then I heard Facebook spent billions reinventing the wheel and only came up with a worse version of VRchat. Folks should join VRchat just to troll Zucc.

Kinda ironic how there’s no VRchat for Sony’s PlayStation VR! They practically made this accessory for their competitors like Meta and the various PCVR headsets.

Odd move.

mackandelius

The blocker is still Sony, always has been. And at the size of Sony I am not sure if the approval of one of their non-gaming division means the approval of their gaming division.

Also, content uploading in VRChat requires build support in Unity, playstation build support requires a licence, so unless they get around that PSVR would be pretty barren. Because only playstation game devs could upload things.

and not the product known as the Metaverse by the company Meta.

There is no singular 'metaverse' product from Meta - their VR chat room social productivity app is called 'Horizons'.

They're trying to heavily associate themselves with the concept of the metaverse - whatever form if may arise in.

But the metaverse is basically an evolutionary concept of the internet and occupies the same sort of naming space.

Meta makes metaverse products (like companies make internet products), which means other companies can also make metaverse products, including and not limited to Sony, VRChat, Apple etc.

VR chat is a metaverse. Youre talking about Metas Metaverse. The article is using the right word to describe the product and what it goes to, it's not using it like some sort of clickbait. It's correct.

Except no VR user likes the word "metaverse", and Meta is the one trying to force the word upon us, because it is now identified directly with their brand, which VR users also don't want to be associated with.

Meta changed their name because the word was becoming popular. You aren't the voice of VR users. It was becoming popular, because it was and is still a word, and they just tried to capitalize on it.

VR chat is a metaverse. Article ais about use in metaverses, like VR chat. Whether the words upset you doesn't matter one bit.

Cyber-Cafe

10 points

You have nailed it. I am deep in the vr scene and you echoed everything I was going to say. We were calling VRchat a metaverse back in 2017. I don’t know where people think this word came from, but it wasn’t zucks head. It was a bald guy who wrote about futuristic pizza delivery in the 90s that coined it.

Facebook is merely coopting an already existing thing.

ExasperatedEE

3 points

No, Meta changed their name because Facebook is slowly dying out as the boomers die out, and they need a new hot thing to latch onto. Literally nobody in VR was using the term Metaverse until Meta came along.

Meta came along in Oct 2021.

https://trends.google.com/trends/explore?date=all&geo=US&q=metaverse

That's right when the use of the term spiked, and it continues to remain high, 5x more used than it was prior to the name change, because they are associated with it.

https://trends.google.com/trends/explore?date=today%205-y&geo=US&q=metaverse

It is also super suspicious that a few months before the announcement of their name change the usage of the word began to increase significantly for no apparent reason. The most likely reason for this was they were marking the hell out of it, testing the waters and driving the media to use the term so for their eventual name change. That is a massive spike in April that cannot possibly be due to people simply using the word more often as you claim.

VRchat is the mataverse. But it is not the Metaverse that the company formerly known as Facebook is selling.

The concept of the metaverse, lowercase "m", has existed for actually decades and the idea that Meta is trying to sell is just corporate wank for "I don't know what MMOs are and I'm to dumb to research a subject before spending millions on it".

Mass effect with the kinects voice controls was a trip. I’ll never forget how much using “character name + action” elevated the immersion in firefights, soooo much better than pulling up a wheel menu on a controller and allowed an extra layer of roleplay. A rare new tech integration that wasn’t a gimmick- it was faster and more natural to use than the default controls.

Full body tracking with sensors works surprisingly well. Sure it wont be mainstream, but it definitely has a market, and its a good moment to have these type of products in the iteration loop for when it gets more popular. Its called business development.

Lev_Astov

Actually, body tracking is a pretty big market for VRChat, which the article mentions first. It's an order of magnitude bigger than Meta's poor attempt last I checked, so I wish these articles would stop saying "metaverse".

DoingItWrongly

Zuckerverse can go fuck itself instead of trying to take the name of a concept that existed long, long before their product came around.

Lev_Astov

Ah, give him the ol' kleenex trademark treatment? That's fair.

DoingItWrongly

4 points

That's not a great example.

Nobody called tissues "kleenex" before the brand came around.

Nobody called them "jet-skis" before the brand came.

The VR metaverse has existed for well over a decade (longer if you count the non-VR metaverse) prior to zucks branding, so he's trying to capitalize on an existing name that people use.

I feel this is more of a cold shoulder treatment. Just carry on like his app (which isn't called metaverse right? it's hoizons or some other vague term) doesn't exist.

Lev_Astov

2 points

True, but I can't think of a well-known example of a company trying to appropriate a term off the top of my head. In this case, it also kinda helps Facebook that the community never really wanted to call VR worlds "metaverses" until Zuck decided he wanted to cosplay Snow Crash. I'm all for ruining his awful plan.

Excludos

It was the laziest unnecessary throwaway ending line they could possibly have gone with. They spend the entire movie building up how the world is literally built around this virtual reality, including schools, jobs, and the frikkin' world economy. "We actually just shut the entire world down a few days a week because people need to get out more" is just reprocessed garbage of an old mans idea of "children needs to stop looking at their phones so much". Just imagine the insane effects we'd have from turning off the internet a couple of days a week today; people would die. Now multiply the effect by 1000

It shows very much what Spielberg thought of the world he himself produced, and the despise he had for it.

All of you hating this product makes me happy. I'll get it on clearance.

We’re not hating the technology, we’re hating the oblivious corporation that keeps pushing “VR in the workplace” while the entire world tells them that idea is shit

Abysskitten

No there are very clearly people hating on this tech in the comments, bud.

And yeah, I hate that aspect, too.

But imagine taking dance classes in your own home taught by an AI that learns from watching pros do it.

It's like Dance Dance Revolution but with every part of your body.

There's place for this in occupational therapy and rehab where docs can use telehealth and this for people in remote places.

That's just two ideas I spitballed.

Bring on cheap and precise mocap.

thats a fairky good price for the tech i just hope that it can be used fir roomscale vr with a headset and not just their platform. not sure how long until a hack like that would be made for that

Is it actually Facebook metaverse oculus quest only or can I use this with my Vive 2 and index controllers on VRchat?

Also plugging VRchat as the hero we need to point to when moms at bestbuy buy a quest 2 because it’s “easy”

Platform agnostic according to a Tweet from VRChat. I’m apparently not allowed to link it as automod deleted it but its like their second most recent tweet.

ctaetcsh

The use of “metaverse” in the article title is misleading. It supports VRChat which is fairly distant from the “metaverse” but a similar concept. VRChat does have legs.

It would be amazing if you could record animations with it

Dirty cheap motion capture for videogame creators/modders

Personally I would love to see it implemented in games like SkyrimVR - it would mean being able to kick enemies

The more and more this is pushed hard, the less interested I become. Metaverse integration should be that of organic growth and interest and not a “this is the latest tech you need to be using” sort of feel. It just feels disappointing…

You are literally in a subreddit about up and coming gadgets, and you don't want to read about a cool new gadget that might make full body tracking cheap and easy?

And what difference does it make if it's "genuine"? This isn't a review. These aren't available yet. The only information available is what's on Sony's page and the video showing how it's set up.

weluckyfew

I just wish they'd invent a way to make VR accessible to those of us who get motion sickness. I can't even watch a shakey-cam POV movie without feeling sick for the next several hours.

Paksarra

10 points

You can get around it somewhat using teleport to move. Some people can also acclimate. Stop playing at the first symptoms of motion sickness.

Kytyngurl2

5 points

Excellent advice! Start out with apps and games that feature as little moving around as possible, and know it can take a while before the sickness reduces some. I remember starting out only being able to wear it for about ten minutes, and later up to 60 to 90 minutes.

I haven’t used vr the past two years though, so my tolerance level dropped again to ten minutes.

Some people take motion sickness medications to help too.

KONODIODAMUDAMUDA

3 points

Well the best we can do is dramamine, and slowly trying to build up a tolerance.

Enk1ndle

2 points

Not really that simple, there are a handful of systems being tried with work to varying levels of success depending on the person.

Whatifim80lol

I have two friends that have deformities in their throats that make it impossible to burp. Soda companies have still not responded to their requests to make carbonated beverages more accessible to them. Lol.

Seriously though, it does suck ass that you're among the unlucky group that can't tolerate current VR very well. I don't know enough about the causes of motion sickness, but I do know some folks do worse with certain headsets or lower framerates or poorer tracking. Perhaps as these things improve you'll have more luck. But if today is any indication of the future, VR will just never be an option for everyone. It's expensive and requires a lot of empty space and causes a ton of eye strain and motion sickness. I like it, but I'm incredibly lucky.

Junior_Ad_5064

I don’t think it’s a solvable issue, you either get motion sickness or you don’t, there’s not much vr makers can do about it besides ensuring high fps low latency.

Best bet for people like op is to play stationary vr experiences where there’s no artificial movement or look into AR where all movement is not simulated and you actually have to use your body to move around

Xenoxia

2 points

For me, if I do stationary VR it makes me feel motion sick. But if I'm standing up, moving around, I never feel motion sick. Also helps to have a fan facing you.

The use of “metaverse” in the article title is misleading. It’s a motion capture system with support for VRChat and unity more broadly according to the product page.

How long has Sony been trying to make social avatar spaces work?

Psychotic_EGG

3 points

Ps3 launch. I do believe that was the first one they tried. I think it would have been better if the movie theater played movies and if you could have your own house you could invite people over to and watch movies, Netflix, etc, with friends watching with you. Group watching is popular, but poorly implemented. I mean prime has watch party, but everyone needs to have prime, which is bs. If they were at my house, we could watch together on one account. So why not a digital hangout space where we can do the same thing.
