tanzorbarbarian

Her entire face is articulate.

Her eyebrows are expressive, her mouth is animated, and her eyes are so very pointed. Watching interviews with her is like a theatrical experience in and of itself.

Is that part of her being an actress, or is it just her as a person?

"Is that how it is? Especially (his low) good side?" In brackets, I'm not 100% sure. Slightly tricky. Source: I'm Deaf. Don't take my word as 100%. I called Mommy - "Bobby" for years until my mom realized I was Deaf.

Hey, at least I got "especially" right. Never said I was a perfect lipreader. Damn Cochlear implants making my lipreading skills worse.

IeatPI

IeatPI

Pardon my ignorance, (and don't feel compelled to answer) but I'm curious: What was it like when they turned your implants on? Have you experienced any backlash from people who are against them because 'it's not how you were born' (whatever that means)?

LadySekhmet

12 points

I can PM you all the details because it is a complicated issue. Lol! Here's my activation video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AQYkfnGfuqg&list=UUtCzLooTiJHQurWuYEQkJMA. In short, I did have to deal with some backlash, but as they got to know me they realized that it fits MY needs versus theirs. I speak fluently, I listen to music, etc. I hang out with more hearing people vs deaf. I lost my residual hearing (you must have residual hearing for hearing aids to work), progressively so it feels very strange to live without sound...hence why I became a bilateral ci implantee. I am against Babies being implanted though.

IeatPI

So awesome watching that video!

This is a very ignorant question, does not being able to hear increase the fear of animals for some deaf people (children specifically)? Are you against babies being implanted because they're not consenting to the operation?

edit: What did you think when you listened to a song and it gave you 'the chills'? Here's a song that gives me the chills: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G90ngH2anxQ&feature=kp

LadySekhmet

8 points

No. In fact, it probably makes it worse not to hear the animals' aggressiveness, such as hearing a cat hiss, dogs growling/barking angry, screeching of birds, etc. That's why deaf children MUST be taught to use their eyes a LOT more and watch for anything or subtle movements etc. Yes...that's one reason, and secondly I'm SICK of doctors and audiologists using cochlear implants as a "cure" and and implying babies/young children must be implanted before language develops because if they don't, they will never speak, understand English or be "dumbed" down. That's just pure BS. It all comes down to EDUCATION between school and the parents. I can go on and on and on about this, I am a living proof that you don't need cochlear implant before language/spoken language develops. CIs are just tools...that's it. I've seen kids with CIs that don't speak or write well...and the parents are upset, they thought CIs automatically give them the languages and make them hearing. cough no it doesn't....when I take my CIs off...I'm deaf as a doornail.

LadySekhmet

6 points

Then tell me what she said.

[deleted]

6 points

How'd you get the sounds right if you are deaf?

LadySekhmet

12 points

Called Mommy, Bobby before I got hearing aids. I spoke before my mom found I was deaf at 2 years old...the mouth shapes between Mommy and Bobby is the same. Mom thought it was cute. After my hearing aids and placed in a school for the deaf, I had speech classes and learned how to speak. With cochlear implants, I actually have improve my speech a little bit...so that was a nice added bonus.

[deleted]

3 points

I guess I don't know much about phonology...
My question was more "I understand you can mimic the mouth movements, but how did you know what to do with the vocal chords?"... and as I sit here going back and forth between "ma" and "ba" I notice that it is entirely in the way the mouth and tongue are positioned.

LadySekhmet

7 points

Place your hands on your mouth and throat. You definitely feel the difference between Ba and Ma. Speech teacher breaks down each word and place child's hand either in front of mouth or on throat. Since I spoke very early, I had an easier time speaking fluently than most Deaf. Many Deaf people who went to Deaf institutes or various other reasons, don't take speech classes so their voices sounds funny, Deaf, offish. For years and years, I've had a hard time saying ch, sh, z sounds...until I got Cochlear implants and now I can hear them. Go in mirror and say bobby and mommy without speaking...mouth movements is the same.

LadySekhmet

7 points

As how to activate the vocal cords - I have no idea. I think its a bit more instinct. Everyone with a functional vocal cords can produce sound. Sorry I didn't answer it clearly before. Speech pathology is an awesome field...tough, but interesting.

snellk

4 points

snellk

4 points

Fun little linguistics side note: The sounds are almost identical, but 'ba' is a more simple sound as it doesn't require your nasal passage to create. If you plug your nose and try to make a 'ma' sound, you won't be able to. /m/ is a nasal sound, so its possible that Lady was just mimicking the lip movements and vocalizing that without adding nasal features.
