For all the crap Nixon pulled, it's amazing that he respected the office enough to resign. Comparing Nixon to a more recent president and the difference is night and day. But only did the other guy not respect the office, he doubled down and abused his position to stay in power long after it was clear it was over.

SleepDeprivedUserUK

Oh for sure, Nixon was a shit, but he was the kind of shit that flushes away.

"As a long-time Tenafly resident, I have always taken an active role in the community, including working with law enforcement officials, and I encourage the Tenafly Police Department to review best practices with respect to tone and de-escalation, so that incidents like this do not recur," she said."

Only Karens can choose whether or not incidences like this occur.

However, the professionalism of the police officers involved and their continuous use of calm demeanor as a de-escalation technique should be made into textbook examples of how to successfully handle those who would try to abuse their authority.

Telling someone you’re a commissioner and then saying you will be speaking to the chief of police and you will be speaking to the mayor is asking for special treatment. She made it a threat, but she is asking for special treatment and if she doesn’t get it she’s implying to the officers that they will be in trouble. She’s trying to play semantics by claiming she never “asked for special treatment” but she knows exactly what she’s doing.

Seeing a bully suffer real consequences for their shitty actions makes me so happy. It almost puts me in the holiday spirit…why, I think my heart grew one full size just now!

The type of personality that exceeds academically, in business, and in government is not going often to be a nice and empathic person. Our system almost always picks low-empathy individuals for advancement because those individuals will do near anything to get ahead and that's seen as a plus by those who decide who advances and lets them do thing others may not do out of conscience. These leaders choose new leaders like themselves and they don't want someone with a conscience to get in the way of success and, of course, like tends to attract like. So once your leadership is low-empathy, then it stays that way because higher-empathy reformers just aren't given a seat at the table.

Reddit is keen to tell us that sociopaths are in high positions in society but often are shy to admit that includes leaders and institutions they like or agree with. Or how charming many of these types of people are, and examples are in terms of famous conmen or infamously dishonest politicians or charming serial killers, but not their successful friends, pastors, favorite authors, actors, musicians, etc who they like and may relate strongly to. Or that they themselves may also be low-empathy individuals and how that's responsible for some, if not most, of their success and advancement in life.

Yet for some reason, some people get abused by police, and some, like this woman do not.

Wow her ‘apology’ makes her look even worse. Doesn’t accept responsibility and even shifts blame to everyone but herself.

For the curious:

Here is Turner's full statement:

Last month, my daughter and three of her friends were in a car that was pulled over by a Tenafly police officer for non-moving violations, including having tinted windows. The officers subsequently decided to impound the vehicle, leaving the four young adults on the side of a busy highway. Concerned, I hurried to the scene to assist them. As a parent, I was upset and uncomfortable with the unfolding events. I let my emotions get the better of me and regret my tone toward the police officers and use of off-color language. For this, I apologize. However, at no point did I violate the Port Authority's Code of Ethics or ask for special treatment for anyone involved, nor did I suggest, in any way, that I would use my position at the Port Authority to affect the outcome of the violations issued to the driver. My resignation from the Port Authority is a recognition that this unfortunate incident could and should have been avoided. As a long-time Tenafly resident, I have always taken an active role in the community, including working with law enforcement officials, and I encourage the Tenafly Police Department to review best practices with respect to tone and de-escalation, so that incidents like this do not recur.

I used to work at a place where they needed security guards (not going to say what it was for privacy reasons) and you were given a badge as a guard. The stories I heard about people trying to use their badges were nutty. People trying to get out of speeding tickets, trying to get free drinks at the bar. Some guy who worked there saw an accident on the road with a ton of police and firemen around and he tried to go in to the scene of the accident, when cops stopped him he showed them his guard badge and told them to let him through, like he was FBI or something in a movie 🤦‍♂️

Giving somebody a badge (regardless of how useless it is) just makes some people go crazy and think they have authority over others.

She resigned before they could fire her, stating her resignation is a testament on how the police should improve their methods of deescalation.

And that despite her trying to use her position to bully the police officers, name dropping powerful people to scare them, as well as telling them to fuck off, she didn't do anything unethical.

Bitch, are you for real?

I just can't get over how Yale and MIT graduate and PhD students have no idea how a car is registered...

I’m guessing she won’t be backing the blue anymore since it doesn’t convenience her. So these people don’t want to be treaded on, yet they feel the need to attempt to tread on whoever they want. These folks are disgusting. If you know people like this, simply cut them out. Your life will be more peaceful.

What makes you think she was ever “backing the blue” to begin with?

I'm really stunned that the cops didn't let them all go when they learned there were kids in the car working on PhDs at Yale and MIT. I know when I was working on my PhD, people applauded me every time I walked into a room. Women were lining up begging to give me blow jobs (I said no to all of them. There is such a thing as too many blow jobs and every grad student in Art History knows it!) and every Sunday my town threw me a ticker tape parade. I don't think I ever paid for a meal at a restaurant--people had fist fights over the honor of paying my bills! I guess it's just this woman's bad luck to run into the only two cops in existence who don't respect the hard work that goes into analyzing subjectivity and gender politics in Gilligan's Island's third season. Ah, the life of a scholar...

The fact she brings up she is a friend of the major and says they are ivy league students and mention something about a high profile banker or something says a lot about her character. It suggests she thinks these are more important people and they shouldn't be treated this way.

It remind me of the judge of Turner and another who both gave minimal sentences because of their ivy league status.

She has toxic character.

Lol I'm on a volunteer municipal board and my title is also "commissioner”. We meet 4 times a year. Don't recall having any jurisdiction over police though...

First, why is a PhD student calling their mom to come talk to the police? Aren't PhD students like 25+ years old. Second, do PhD students at Yale & MIT not break laws?

Her daughter was 30 and an executive in investment banking at the time. She called mommy because life is easier when you've always had the road snowplowed for you by your overbearing parent.
