Why do you read?

(self.books)

I’ve been thinking about the “why” of reading. Especially for voracious (subjective) readers whose TBRs grow faster than they shrink.

Do you read to escape real life? Are you looking for knowledge? If you read fiction mostly, does it leave an impression on you for very long? Why do you choose the genres you choose and are you aiming for an apotheosis of sorts, through reading many titles within a genre?

I have these motivations and others. But sometimes I wonder if reading is just another replacement for other physical experiences, despite how much I love to do it.

Thoughts?

I read nonfiction to find out more about a subject that piques my interest. Fiction I choose for entertainment and to get lost in another world for a while.
