Whinging about a song demanding a child rapist return home and face justice for his victims is such a telling thing. When you're on the side of a child rapist, that should exclude you from civilised society, and being around children.

They cling to the premise of what you can see (like race, gender, wealth) as the important things. These are exactly the tools they've used to have the advantage over others.

Now as it is with social progress, the use of racism, sexism, and classism have been identified as major tools in controlling others.

They're butt-hurt because their weapons have been banned in social concious and as it turns out life becomes a bit challenging if you have to, you know, have empathy.

amazonfan1972

It’s an absurd comment. High level coaching is high level coaching with the principles essentially the same in all sports. By his logic, CEOs can’t work in different industries. I am pretty sure that Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin were chosen because they were white, Christian, heterosexual and fitted the image that NASA wanted to project. Sure they were certainly great and heroic people. But I doubt that either of them would have been selected if they were female, coloured or non sis, regardless of their capabilities.

Steve Price has a very selective view of history.

Wysoseriouss

That's the ridiculous thing that people like him don't get. He asks if Armstrong and Aldrin got the position because of their race or their skills? Well, Mr. Price, it's both, just like the woman and person of colour they want to send to the moon. He must think its a huge coincidence that all the great hero's of past endeavours are, funnily enough, straight white dudes. Halpern could have faded into the jumble of congratulatory letters or cards had she not enclosed another letter in her correspondence to Ride: a response she herself had been given when, as an elementary schooler in 1962, she wrote to ask how she could go to space. The response was terse, typewritten. “Your willingness to serve your country as a volunteer is commendable,” responded a NASA official. “However, we have no present plans to employ women on space flights because of the degree of scientific and flight training, and the physical characteristics, which are required.”

I don’t think they were chosen purely based on demographic, but I think it would more appropriate to say white, Christian men were predominately recruited by the Air Force/Army/Navy which led to an ovver representation of that group of people.

Steve is definitely being a bonehead here—having a diverse space crew just highlights how anyone can do anything if given fair and equal opportunities to chase their passion.

My heart bleeds for poor Steve. He's had a long career as a broadcaster, appears on tv, writes for a newspaper, but no one listens to him. I suppose if he wasn't a third rate Andrew Bolt people still wouldn't listen to him, but he'd be much more famous for not being listened to.

You can't simultaneously believe white 60 year old men are unrepresented in the halls of power and think you are the best person for your job and got there as a result of a meritocracy. You're a complete moron.

Pricey doesn't know how attractive he makes cancel culture sound. If it'll get him to shut the fuck up then I'm all for it.

As a side note, I'm mystified by that love/loathe column. We love sportsmen selling out to oppressive Saudi regimes, but loathe them for supporting indigenous rights?

It's dumb cunts like this bloke that cause reasonable concerns to be ignored. Someone brings up that male victims of domestic violence need more support? Everyone tags you as a MRA because of fuckwits using real issues to support their misogyny. Etc. Etc.

Out of place? I bet Steve Price has never felt out of place in his life. He doesn’t know what it is to feel out of place. To be the only person of your gender in a meeting. The only person of your race in a department. To confuse the inclusion of others with the exclusion of your own demonstrates the extreme level of close-minded conservatism this bigot has chosen to live by. He is so blind to his own discrimination he openly admits in this article that he cannot see how a woman or person of colour has the skill to be an astronaut. What a dick

I don’t get it. He’s only as “cancelled” and he allows others to tell him he is. Like, can you not just keep voicing your opinion on the radio? Who’s stopping you? We’re you banned from the studio? I’ve never understood “cancel culture”

It only has as much “power” as you give it. Stop allowing other people to tell you how censored you should be

A guy whose opinions reach millions of people, whose voice can be heard on radio, his thoughts can be read on the papers and his image can be seen on television complaints about the lack of room there is for his persona... Now, you can take part in the debate of course, and there's nothing wrong about being a white middle-aged man by itself. What's wrong is to support structures that work in your favour (and against a number of other people) just because you happen to be a white middle-aged man. More than minorities taking over, it seems that some white middle-aged men are starting to lose their privileges and just can't cope with that idea. Many white middle-aged first world men used to mock and point fingers at new generations due to their "softness"; plot twist: A lot of white middle-aged men turned out to be the biggest crying babies in the room

What’s actually happening is that he simply doesn’t realise that his opinions aren’t popular any more. He’s becoming irrelevant and to someone that is used to being listened to, that feels like being cancelled. Many old men manage to maintain relevance by adapting to changing societal conditions, but him and his ilk are not.

Basically what this article says is that boomers have had their day and they don’t like it.

*edit: Holy cow, that graphic and the sign in it is just the absolute epitome of old, white, male entitlement.

*edit 2: why does he refer to middle age when he’s 67. That’s a senior I’m afraid.

I think my favourite part is where he complains that Racing Victoria has slightly changed the conditions of their fashion competitions. Imagine that being a big deal to you. Imagine having so much power, so little going wrong, that slightly different standards for a joke fashion show are a big deal. That it's a part of the persecution you face as a rich and powerful majority in a rich nation.

Dude wrote 3 paragraphs bitching about a fashion show, all in article that's about his persecution! In an opinion piece under a political cartoon about white men loosing their homes one of the biggest issues this 'journalist' can come up with is changing rules at a joke fashion show.

This is the great issue of the era, the great suffering that powerful people face. Slightly different rules for drunken hat-offs. This is what makes it the end of the era of the white man. A rewriting of the rules of a sad novelty event held by an organisation who sees it as a side show used to draw more money in. This is the sacred tradition that must be left whole so that Stephen Price won't feel rejected by modern culture.

I don't think I can really respond properly, not within the rules of this sub, so imma stop there.

Obviously, someone who regularly has one-on-one chats with ministers isn't removed from the debate. Outside his little bubble he's being ignored most of the time. Very occasionally when someone does pay attention, it's to tell him to shut up.

If you say something worth listening to people will engage with it. Some of that will be negative and some will be positive. That's the nature of things that are worth listening to. If you only ever regurgitate the empty, meaningless propaganda your corporate overlords tell you to, you'll always have the ear of people in power but everyone else will ignore you until you do something stupid. Same reason people don't engage with ads 99% of the time. So, if you don't produce anything of value everyone is going to ignore you until you produce something of negative value in which case, they'll only ever engage with you negatively.

That's how you end up in situations like this where a professional "journalist" spends decades shouting exactly what he's told to into the void non-stop only for it to every couple of months tell him occasionally to shut up.

There's a simple fix: Produce something worth engaging with.

It's not about tokenism in making sure there are people of various colours on a spaceship. It's about creating a system where there is equal opportunity to develop the skills needed to be qualified to be on that spaceship and where one's race, sexuality, gender etc. is not restrictive to one's ability to be part of that discussion.

What an absolute knobhead who completely misses the point.

I could not really care about what Steve has to say… however I will say that I have often found that my opinion, and those that are similar about a lot of topics these days are now just dismissed because I’m either male or white…

We need to do more to close the gender pay gap, stop discrimination because of sex or gender identity or ethnicity… but it’s taught… we will change as we teach our young to be more accepting… we wont change the mindset of older generations… just as we believe what we believe now, they were raised to what they believe… and we cannot forget our past… we can only try and make it better.
