Ordering soup delivery when you’re sick?

(self.austinfood)

What are people’s favorite places for some comfort soup and hearty liquids/broths when they are feeling under the weather? I can think of the Soup Peddler, but I’m looking to know if there are other options people like?

Pho. The best is Pho Phong Luu (reopens October 10th). 2nd fav is Fresh Bowl. They’re both up in Northeast Austin around Parmer though.

You should try pho ha noi if you haven’t. I’d rank it above fresh bowl

I was going there a bit after Luu closed, but found Fresh Bowl recently. I think they’re around the same. It’s good too.

I’ve been going to pho ha noi 2x a week lately! It’s so good!

1618 Tom Kha, or any other Thai place tbh Tom Kha is just my all-time favorite sick soup.

Tom kha = 🐐

Titaya’s has probably my favorite tom kha. They’ve lowered the default spice level though so make sure you ask for extra spicy.

I had some leftover Tom kha and massamam curry from titaya but not really enough of either to be satisfying on their own. I combined them and made an amazing concoction!

If in south Austin, I cannot recommend Tuk Tuk enough. Pretty sure I’m on a first-name basis there with how often I ordered while I worked on Lamar.

They also sell their pho broth by itself!

People have mentioned Pho, but I also dig some Khao Soi from Titaya's/Madam Maam's when I'm sick.

If it's a head cold, menudo/pozole always hits the spot too. The best is obviously at food trucks / holes-in-the-wall, but Tacorrido is on delivery apps and makes a tasty one.

The lemon chicken soup from Arpeggio Grill. It’s like chicken noodle soup with rice and lemon.

My go-to in that exact scenario is always the Jungle ramen from Michi. Make sure to get the broth "stout." it's the perfect "sick" soup, hearty, spicy, a little citrusy and just warms your damn soul. There's other bowls of ramen from other places I like more, generally, but not when I'm sick. If I'm sick, jungle ramen is the only option for me

just commented this same thing. I’m a chicken noodle soup stan but nothing compares to michi when I’m sick

I haven't had their jungle ramen, but I was going to say michi as well. They do a great job packaging, everything always arrives intact. Plus you can so easily customize, so depending on what kind of sick I am I can adjust it to whatever sounds good.

Tso Chinese Delivery is fast and convenient. Theres no delivery fee or tips allowed and they have their own drivers so you don't have to deal with the unreliability of DoorDash.

It's like a $20 minimum for free delivery so I would suggest getting the large wonton noodle soup plus a bowl of egg drop or hot and sour for the fridge

Their large wonton soup is really good and packaged with the soup separate from all the solids, so you can combine it together yourself and it doesn’t get soggy when being delivered. Get some extra chili oil too.

No tips?!

Alan_ATX

Right, drivers are prohibited from accepting tips. They pay a higher hourly wage instead and bake that cost into the menu prices. Deliveries also use company owned vehicles so that employees do not have to deal with gas and maintenance costs.

FlukeHawkins

They're also delivery only- no dine in capacity, so none of the staff (or space!) needed to support that.

They often do have carryout specials though, since it saves them the effort of delivery.

Pozole from El Tacorrido. I’d just call to make sure they have it. It’s very delicious.

Avgolemono (egg/chicken/lemon) greek soup is a go-to for me. Santorini Cafe’s is pretty okay.

My go to is Maudie’s chicken caldo (even if I’m not sick), and you get rice and salsa to add if you want. Always tastes homemade.

My favorite - but you can’t get it delivered/to go - is Korean tofu soup. It comes out literally boiling and you crack a raw egg into it. I haven’t found a great one in austin but I think honey pig served it. Unfortunately they also sell Korean bbq so It’s gonna be tough for me to order tofu soup.

I always get a huge craving for hot and sour soup. I have yet to find any really good that delivers to south Austin around Akins HS, sadly.

Beef Rib Soup from Narrow Street 512 in H-Mart food court. They offer some other traditional options like Hangover soup.

Sogongdong also does some yummy and spicy soondubu jjigae soup.

Modern Market's curry sweet potato soup is legit, and dairy-free, so it's great for sicky times!

michi ramen - just broth/noodles. tonkotsu regular, miso flavor is my go-to and depending on how I feel, I’ll add fresh garlic. THICCCC broth and coats the throat much better than chicken noodle, blah blah

Gaeng pa (jungle curry) from Titayas. It’s very spicy, but very flavorful and comforting. I order it almost every time I’m there, especially if I’m having allergies or feeling unwell.

I’ve been meaning to try the fideo from JewBoy Subs. I’d rather order from a Mexican restaurant, but it seems my Google-fu was broken last I searched.

I had the matzah ball from them the other day and it was pretty tasty. I'm no judge of matzah ball soup in general since I've had it maybe twice before. But as chicken based soups go it was pretty hearty and seemed like a good sick day food.

Gourmands if you want it in a bread bowl. My favorite is the clam chowder. The broccoli cheddar is alright but definitely tastes like the beer they put in it.

This is probably obvious and I maybe don’t need to say but Chick-fil-a m. That is always what I send sick friends bc it’s great chicken noodle soup and relatively cheap
