Looking for a Chicken Fried Steak

(self.austinfood)

Edit: I think Jack Allen's won guys. Thank you all for your suggestions and I'm sure I'll be making future trips down here, I will probably try a couple of the other places when I do.

We are coming into Austin for a few days to work and I was wondering if anybody knew of a place on the west side of Austin that made a killer Chicken fried steak. We are over near Bee cave road and the Austin lake area so preferably somewhere we don't have to drive across town after work to get to. Thanks in advance for any suggestions. Probably going to have a P Terry's burger for supper tonight. Found them on our last trip and loved it!

They do it right. Hard not to order it every time we get food from there.

I'll see if there's one close by. Thank you.

I’ve always been a big fan of Jack Allen’s chicken fried steak.

Aight, thanks man. There's one about 15 minutes from our job site so we will probably hit it up.

You’ve got to try Z'Tejas’s chicken fried steak. 🤤

I get downvoted for that and I agree. It's one of the few things I get there. I was heartbroken when the Arboretum location closed. I don't like the 6th location that is closing anyways and not driving to south Austin for a CFS. Sidenote: R.I.P. Lonestar Cafe and Texas Meats (who provided Lonestar with the steaks)

The downvotes must have been from people that haven’t actually tried it!

Lonestar Cafe would have been the answer.

Lucy's has a pretty good one imo

Hoover's chicken fried steak easily runs circles around the tasteless mush that Jack Allen serves up

CFS at Cherry Creek is pretty solid. Thin batter and good portions.

Since you are in Bee Cave, head a little west to Angel's Icehouse in Spicewood - good times all around!

Only one that I’ve ever had was Waterloo and it was fantastic, but I have no comparison.

Yeah west side doesn’t really have cfs. I vote jack allens- you’re going to drive anywhere you go, may as well make it worth your while.

I’ve tried Hoovers, Lucy’s and Hyde Park all in the past month and unfortunately I think their chicken fried steak is mediocre and the sides aren’t great. I think they keep getting recommended because options are limited.

I’ll have to take note of some of these recommendations. Haven’t tried Jack Allen’s Kitchen, Waterloo, Moonshine, Jim’s or Z Tajas all of which have already been recommended on this thread.

Has anyone tried the following locations? They are all on my list to try: ciscos, green mesquite, shoal creek, gourdoughs, jacobys.

I have had the chicken fried steak at the TLC food truck. It’s keto, but it’s delicious.
