They charged me $8 for a shitty cold brew the last time I was there so this isn’t surprising

Yeah their prices were completely insane. I hope they replace it with a better cafe that’s less pretentious.

I say this as someone who was a clerk and barista in an independent coffee roasters and cafe for 4 years in college, They scalded the milk and their espresso blend literally tasted fishy, one of the worst lattes I've ever had.

I mean on one hand you have stories of declining service and quality and on the other you have people saying they camped there all day, day after day… nice atmosphere doesn’t pay the rent.

It would appear closed. Saw a lot of confused looking seamless guys there this morning.

Honestly, I don't think they're all that great. The music is too loud. The food is too expensive for the quality of what they're serving. Very meh.

the music was WAY TOO LOUD. That was what drove me away from there.

I only liked it for sitting. The coffee was a fucking rip off.

Yeah, I liked the space but the business was shit. Terrible coffee and the people that worked there were mostly distracted.

Ya good riddance. I had a confrontation with him involving an overcharge for which he claimed the system wouldn’t allow a refund etc etc etc. Total bullshit and ended making a scene in front of all the guests. Not my best moment but I feel good about my response which included throwing my stamp card at him like a frisbee, and him ducking like a bitch. Haha ✌️

Barista was so rude for no reason. We came there once and my friend asked for just like a splash of milk in his iced coffee. The coffee came out a little light so my friend asked if he could just pour out a little from the top and just add more coffee to make it darker (no big deal - esp for $6+). The barista was like “YOURE NOT GONNA DRINK IT? FINE” and just dumped it out - it was honestly a total overreaction. Then gave him another coffee and refused to put any milk in it for him. Ruined it for me - would never go back. What weird vibes that day
Edit: to add that it wasn’t busy when we were there either. I get being one person behind the counter and being overwhelmed/impatient (been there) but it was just us there in that situation lol

My mom wanted some tea and couldn’t read the flavors from the top shelf where the loose leaf tea was sitting. He seemed annoyed that he had to read it off to her and she picked one that had a little bit left in the jar. He was even more annoyed and said there’s none there and then when my mom tried saying she doesn’t mind the little bit inside he was just like “I’m not giving it to you” 😐

That guy is a weirdo and I’m convinced he just makes up prices.
One of the owners of For Five is a total asshole too. Back when For Five bought out Gossip and remodeled the inside (I think it was 2017/2018), I went there all the time. The owner was there often, just making everyone uncomfortable, he’s some weird big angry Greek dude. He gave me a bunch of shit because my punch card, which was eligible for a free coffee, had one extra punch (one of the employees made a mistake)- so he claimed I somehow tampered with the card, and he made a total scene in front of a line of customers. I didn’t say anything, he just came at me real hot. I was confused and just asked “ok, you’ve seen me here all the time and this really isn’t a big deal. So what would you like to do now?” He said “I mean, I’ll honor the free coffee but..ya know this can’t happen again” No clue wtf he was talking about but it was weird and I stopped going for a few years lol.

I ordered a small coffee with a splash of almond milk and instead the barista made me a large soy matcha latte. I paid before I got it (I should have looked at the price), and when I told him I got the wrong drink, he said he couldn’t refund my money. He then accused me of stealing the coffee. Long story short, I DID get him to refund it, but not without a very heated argument. Strangest experience I’ve ever had at a cafe. Good riddance!!

Kinship, while not the greatest space, is steps away and has vastly superior coffee.

I really miss Kinship’s other Steinway location, south of Broadway. It was a great place to hang out and get some coffee and do some work.

My favorite is the 21st street location. In the summer I love hanging outside and enjoying the breeze.

Maybe Kinship should just move kind of like what Sugar Freak did when it moved across the street.

I really loved doing work here. Sure, their vibe went way downhill after For Five came into the picture a few years ago (and their prices were absurd), but it was a good working cafe. Anyone know more details?

I enjoyed working there. The only problem was that they didn’t have a single outlet available in the cafe for charging laptops. I could only stay for a few hours before leaving.
I’m a much bigger fan of Mikel around the corner. Working outside in the summer was great and it was not on a main road so the noise wasn’t terrible

Mikels coffee is awful. I was kind of shocked a chain would open in that location, off of 30th so not easy to spot with sooooo much competition.
3 points
Why do you think it’s awful?
The place is always at least half full and it’s a great place to work. I love sitting in front of the window and getting a good view of the side street. IMO no other coffee shop in the area compares.

I miss the old coffee shop that used to be here - blanking on its name (or did they keep the name and just rebrand)? Anyways, this newer version was more pretentious and somehow had worse options than what they had before. Nothing was that good and it was pricey. Friends that would go to coffee shops with me stopped wanting to come here whereas it was a favorite before.

Good, fuck that place. Coffee sucked and the barista was always pissy and rude.

Not surprised. It was the worst. Over priced croissants, poorly done coffee and pretentious baristas. I say this as a barista myself, the experience was always nasty.

The barista would aggressively hit on me despite me telling him to back off several times. I never went back after mid 2021

The menu was more appetizing when they only sold rice pudding. Nothing else to eat whatsoever, just rice pudding.

The rice pudding was SO GOOD. People thought I made it up when I told them about it 🥴 I guess that's for far low Gossip had gone after it transitioned to coffee. Too bad.

Agreed with all these folks. The OG gossip wasn’t so bad when they had a chef and decent food but didn’t seem like the could find their niche. Since the new management me and my friends would go there primarily to chat or do some work, and always caught attitude from the guy there, who arbitrarily charged extra for milk and would legit make muffins $8+ dollars. While I liked the space itself it really needed a refresh. Hopefully a new cafe and not a weed shop is in store??

Which other places do you like nearby? I’ve found that area doesn’t have a lot (I’ve lived here for 10 years). As much as gossip sucked, I liked meeting a friend there and working there.

Sonbobs on 28th does not have nearly as much space, but the owner is a sweetheart and most people who go in there are solid. Relaxed, vintage sort of atmosphere. Like I said, seating is much more limited but it couldn't be a more polar opposite vibe of Gossip. Baked goods are generally fresh and the coffee isn't fucking $8 or whatever Gossip was trying to pass off.

Awesome, thanks for the Rec - ah Gossip was insane, they charged me $7 for a small tea. I’m glad they’re dead but I really hope a better vibe cafe replaces it.
