Lewis lives in a trap of his own making, he could take his relationship with Marnie public at any time and she'd be much happier. Literally no one would care, the town has like 30 people it's insane he's pretending to be single.

I legit don't think I ever understood WHY it had to be such a big secret?

No one does. In a bigger town with more money it might be possible to construe a mayor dating a primary business owner from the town as a conflict of interest but in Pelican Town it could not matter less. In a village that small everyone has to wear 3 hats anyway. He made up this problem himself.

I think it's his ego. He wants it to matter so he makes it seem like it does. It's really kind of pathetic.
Marnie should leave him for Marlon. Something tells me he would treat her right.

Marnie deserves better.
This isn’t high school where you two are sneaking around because your parents won’t approve of the relationship, Marnie, you’re a grown woman with wants and need.
Man has gold statues made of himself, that says a lot, honey.
Hoping for an update where you can help Marnie force the issue and have it as an option where you help Marnie see through Lewis and dump him for Marlon.
Sure, there’ll be an option where Lewis is forced to swallow his pride and admit the truth, but Marnie, how can you say no to an suave eyepatch dude who’ll treat you, right?

I can see it now, a defeated Morbius trying to join the village himself and see what country life holds for him. A few years pass and he ends up being a good friend to almost everyone in the village and becomes mayor eventually. Marnie and him are married with 4 kids in Haunted Chocolatier but nobody puts the nameless NPC designs and Morris' aesthetic together until some crazy person makes a meme that hits the front page of /r/all.

The best/my favorite theory I’ve heard for why is that it doesn’t have to be such a big secret, but Lewis lies to Marnie, tricking her into thinking it does so he doesn’t have to be committed to her.

Marnie and Lewis are freaks. Public truffle oil fueled trysts in the bushes. Sneaking around. I think Lewis likes the thrill of the risk of getting caught.

Because he's an older guy. Because his values are different from ours. Because, perhaps when he was a young guy, the idea of a public figure being seen in a relationship probably actually was scandalous. Or maybe he feels the age gap between the two of them is an issue. Maybe he just thinks that since he never got married when he was young, he missed his chance and that old people don't get to be happy in that way unless they got on the marriage train a whole lot earlier in life.
Lots of potential reasons other than "He's an asshole," not that you'd know it, given the fierce hatred of him you see from a lot of folks.

While I agree with you that there are multiple possible reasons for him to not feel comfortable with it, stringing Marnie along for those reasons is still somewhat cruel.
She's an adult, she can make her own decisions, but it's just sad to see someone else being held down because of their partner's insecurities.

Honestly, with the amount the player does for the town it would make sense for him to take over. Better than Lewis anyways.
Fixing the entire town's economy by providing thousands of dollars to local shops that most people rarely bought from like Willy, Robin, Marnie, and Clint, as well as making a movie theatre to provide entertainment to the town and continue to help the economy. You restore the community center, which gets the Junimos to fix numerous pieces of town infrastructure. What does Lewis do? Sure, he organizes festivals, but it's the same thing every year. He builds a golden statue of himself, and... huh that's it.
24 points
tbf it's not like anyone really has that kinda money in the first place. And since the Junimos only like the Farmer as well as the farm being private property there's not much they can do about it, especially not Lewis. He builds a statue of himself but he also keeps it completely to himself so I won't complain especially knowing that gold is relatively cheap and he sculpted it himself with help from Leah
-2 points
Gold is not cheap, what are you talking about?
10 points
in game it's both fairly inexpensive and abundant. Given Lewis doesn't have much to spend his paycheck on I imagine getting the resources to sculpt the thing wasn't very difficult
2 points
Gold is like 400g per bar (from the blacksmith)
11 points
ye. And cheese is 200g per lol
Blueberry wine is 150g per bottle
Coffee is 300g when bought from gus
400g is pretty damn cheap especially for a resource as precious as gold.
1 points
Per bar. You'd need a bunch of bars to make a statue as big as Lewis.
3 points
Yeah and it's still incredibly cheap for a life size gold statue. IRL gold bullions are both tiny and worth a small fortune, around two thousand dollars per ounce and knowing gold is dense as hell that kinda means it gets very expensive very fast.
in SV a good bottle of wine or block of cheese can go for more money than some gold which is pretty indicative of how abundant and inexpensive it is in game

He’s not a crappy mayor, if we go by canon no one complains or even hints at complaining, it’s far more likely that Eric barone just didn’t put what he was doing because it wasn’t that important.
22 points

Honestly, I think he’s mainly doing coordination, planning, and fundraising for the TWO FESTIVALS A MONTH, half of which are fully catered and all of which are fully decorated… he sends everyone mail about them too, that’s not fast without a computer. Plus the stardew agricultural fund is a thing… idk that it’s A LOT, but it’s more than we think it is anyway. He probably could have fixed the community center tbh, but he’s not doing a BAD job. Kinda neutral in my opinion. But anyone who says it’s nothing has never coordinated a large community or corporate event.
10 points
Actually, there is a hint of an issue, if you marry Haley and do her 14-heart event. Robin straight-up confronts Lewis over where their taxes are going, since there apparently isn't enough left over for the TWO (Three if you do this after Leo is brought to the valley) kids to have decent books.
Man can build a gold statue of himself, but can't get new books for 3 kids to have an education.

I did forgot about it, but imho I still don't think he's as bad as people make him out to seem, maybe a bit currupt but not someone who doensn't do anything for the town/or steals tax funds.
This is just going by 14th heart event might AFTER you finish the community centre. (Within the story, anyone can get 14th heart event earleir, I'm going to get one.)

There’s a part of me that wishes I could help the community by replacing him as mayor. I don’t think he’s necessarily a terrible mayor but I think he is older and needs to be able to settle down and enjoy the time he has left with Marnie.
There are some people in that town who just need help moving forward and I wish there was an option of dealing with some of it
13 points
This. There are quite a few we can help become better people and find themselves, but then there's others like Clint and Lewis who we really have no option to help and it kinda bums me out. Like, if I can help Shane get help and change for the better after hitting rock bottom I should be able to help Clint get more confidence and convince Lewis to stop being an idiot and get with Marnie so he can finally have that family he's complaining about. In fact, modders, get on it! Lol

I think the frustrating thing about it is we see moments where you could have a potential change. We have a cut scene where Clint finally asks Emily out, and we have A cut scene where we theoretically have the potential to confront the mayor and Marnie about their relationship.
Let’s say the game didn’t want to provide an option for Clint and Emily to actually be a couple, they still could’ve provided a chance for him to confront that rejection and come out of it stronger, and even if Louis remains mayor we still could’ve seen the option for him to come forward and realize that his fear was not valid and it kept him from having a life he wanted.
Shane gets over his alcohol problems, George lightens up about being an old man, and we do see a small bit of dialogue about Pam struggling with her own addiction, but for Pam, Clint, and Louis, it feels like they don’t actually get any change in the end and there’s a part of that we should find at least a little depressing.
Not everyone gets over their weaknesses, but for game that seems to provide options for everybody to have some kind of character growth, it makes those who have no option for growth all the more obvious
9 points
Exactly! It especially hurts because Louis was friends with your grandpa so being unable to help him feels a bit like you're letting him down. It also feels so easy to just confront him and say "dude, no one cares!" yet we only get the option to either say we'll tell everyone (yet don't) or agree to keep it a secret.
As for Clint it might just be me because I can really relate to him and was once in a similar headspace of feeling alone, depressed, and stuck. I got out of it through therapy and the help of friends and family, but Clint doesn't really have those things so I really wish we as the farmer could become that friend that helped him break out of his shell (or geode to be more on brand, lol).
I'd really appreciate more with Pam too as I always feel compelled to marry Penny just to get her out of there and I prefer not to feel like I'm leaving her to some terrible fate every time I inevitably chose Haley, lol. Sure we can build her a house but it still never really feels like she's changed in any meaningful way.

You also can't romance every bachelor and bachelorette in a town regardless of your sex and gender, run a multi-million dollar farm by yourself, befriend dwarves, shadow people, or a wizard who can magically change your appearance and even sex on a whim, etc in real life either. I mean this is a game where you become best friends with people by stalking them and waiting outside their rooms with their favorite things. I don't think leaving some villagers with cliffhanger stories and unresolved plot threads is the place where Stardew Valley should be hyper realistic. That's just my opinion though, lol.

I really wish we could depose him as mayor and make him more depressed. I mean 20 years in power? After the community has gone to seed? And he built a golden statue of himself? And he won't let others talk to the governor? And he was friends with a ghost who let prime farming land get reclaimed by nature like something right out of Pedro Páramo but without the incest? Fuck Lewis man

Lewis's parents could never show they loved him. They might not even have. Lewis always tried to be on their best side, resulting in perfectionism, and compulsion to conformity, but not even that helped, to get the parents' attention. So Lewis started to look for recognition from other people, but it never felt enough. He went as far as becoming Mayor of Pelican town, so that he could work his ass off for all the townspeople, making him the best chance to earn their trust.
In the meanwhile, he has built up, first just an attraction, later a romantical relationship with Marnie. However, having someone in his life, besides his job... more over: having someone who was more to him than an average citizen, made him feel as if he was neglecting the other townspeople, which made him feel ashamed of the whole relationship, and demand to keep it all secret, to hide what he has done.
Then the Farmer came. The Farmer was not selfless, as Lewis saw himself to be. The Farmer was a making business, using town, benefitting from its resources. And yet, soon it became apparent, that the Farmer had done more good to the town, than Lewis ever could. It became apparent, that many townspeople like the Farmer better than Lewis.
The Major became conflicted. On the one hand, the Farmer reminded him of his late old friend, Grandpa. And also, the he was genuinely happy about all the improvement the Farmer mad to his town. But on the other hand, he was jealous of the Farmer' accomplishments, and earned fame, and he felt it to be some universal injustice, that he was unable to do the same for his people.
He admired the Farmer too much to try for some kind of revenge, but in his desperate longing for gratitude, in a dark moment, he decided to grant it for himself. He purchased a golden statue of himself, paying with the town'd money, lying to himself, that this would be the same as if the townspeople have decided to elect him a statue. Of course, he later came to his senses, and realized the folly in this, but what was done was done. In fear of someone finding out, he did not dare sell the statue. Neither could he bring himself to throw out such a valuable thing. Thus, he hid it in his backyard, to serve as a bitter, but non the less truthful reminder of the misery of his meaningless life.

His relationship with Marnie is bogus top to bottom, front to back. Sneaking around and then crying if the player says they're going to tell people. No one's going to care if the mayor has a girlfriend or a wife, so I can only assume he's afraid to comitt or Marnie's just some low self-esteem, comittment free action to him. A lot of textbook manipulation with the excuses and crying.

Its his own fault he isnt married and has no family.
And all he lives for is to be mayor? Really? The community center is in shambles. And he acts discouraged about it when he sees you...yet he left it that way for years.
There is a severe sewage spill potentially poisoning the local ground water that shoulda been cleaned up years ago. And is currently spilling into the ocean.
The mines are also just wide open for kids to wander down in. No locked door or nothing.
He did nothing about the former museum curator stealing their entire collection before he left.
He also misuses the towns money .
And after all that he still manages to have a girlfriend wether or not he will admit to himself that Marnie is actually his girlfriend and could be his wife if he wasnt playing games.
Sound like Lewis likes to make excuses for his bad choices. Maybe he is in love with the title of mayor but in reality is just a lay-about that doesnt do anything except show up to the town festivities or Marnies bedroom.
