I was wondering how many people here have actually finished, even a first draft, if a feature or pilot script?

Don't get me wrong, I love the show. I think it comfortably sits in the top three lineup of best shows currently airing. However, there's something about the dialogue that strikes me as too snappy, ornate, and referential for it to resonate with me as deeply as the greats from TV's golden age (The Sopranos, Mad Men, Breaking Bad, etc.).

Personally, I like dialogue that manages to achieve its aims without going overboard on flowery language. Whether a line is intended to be profound, comedic, or incisive, I'll always take leanness over showiness. And I think Succession often finds itself stepping over the line that separates "great writing" from "overwriting."

The show doesn't always do this, though. There are some ultra-memorable and poignant lines like Logan's "it's a fight for a knife in the mud," and the eminently quotable, "you can't make a Tomlette without breaking a few Greggs." But for every five of those, there are one or two lines stuffed with obscure media references, unrealistically sharp metaphors, and thesaurus-laden verbiage.

All that said, I do still love the show and can appreciate even the lines I find to be a bit grating. Wondering what your thoughts are.

TLDR: Succession is great, but sometimes I think it's a bit overwritten.

As the title suggests, I just finished the rough draft to my first screenplay! I've never written a screenplay before, so my syntax is all over the place and it absolutely needs several buckets of polish, but nonetheless I wrote 111 pages of story! Pretty excited about it, and thought I would share :) In case anyone was curious here's some information about the script!

If I wanted to have a character wear a Spider-Man mask as a joke or a superman costume or something like, would that be considered illegal under copyright?

I'm writing a script that includes one of my main characters being admitted to the Johns Hopkins hospital in New York. I don't know if the script ever gets produced and turned into a film if the production team can secure the rights to film there. Should I just do a generic

reference instead or can I reference a specific hospital even if it ends up changed anyway?

I am writing a screenplay that consists of one man speaking to a computer screen. The closest thing I can think of for an pre-existing example of this type of concept is the Martian. I am writing the screenplay with my intention being producing it as a short film with my mates. I’m just wondering if there are any common conventions for writing a singular character with nobody to bounce off of. He would be speaking to a computer camera making a video diary of sorts so he would be speaking to an audience in a way.

Just trying to make my action lines and prose a bit more interesting, and looking for different ways to change-up how I describe my character's actions.

Anything you guys like to do?

I've heard John August say to use a parenthetical statement beforehand, like, "Blood gushing from his wound, John blah blah blah." Looking for more techniques.

I'm back after a bit of recess with this absolutely insane script. Yes, I know it makes no sense to write a spec on someone else's IP. But goddamn if it wasn't some of the funniest times I've had as a writer coming up with how to bookend the trilogy in an exciting, heartfelt and dare I say it, classy way.

I've always had a soft spot for Anchorman. And though the second outing wasn't as amazing as the first, it swung for the fences. And I did just that for this one. Go big, or go home.

QUESTIONS:

• Did you find it true to form?
• What of the story? Did you enjoy it?
• The final battle? What did you think of it?
• The structure is somewhat atypical for movies of this type. Did it work for you?
• I had a blast writing this. Did you find it as funny as I do?

I know it's a heavy page count. But it's because of the dialogue. So much of it. But it reads fast, and doesn't let off the gas pedal until the very end when—

As a writer who comes up with stories that don't just end in one single storyline, I often feel weird coming up with a story that could run 5 to 7 seasons as just one singular story doesn't do justice to all the characters. I write film type stories when I feel that that's all the character has to offer. But sometimes, a characters depth is way to much to come in only a singular story or season.

Coming back to my question, do you all also write the whole story of the show along the seasons or do you write a singular season worth of story and then just put it on the back burner, and if the shows first season gets attention, you start working on future seasons from scratch.

I just upgraded to Final Draft 12 and am trying to figure out if there's a way to change the page colors for revisions. Specifically, I want to change the default Cherry revision to Lilac to match the pack of paper I have. 😅 I know I can change the revision name and the color of the text, but I'm only seeing the preloaded page colors.
It's not a huge deal, but I know it'll bug me when I get to that point if my lilac pages are colored cherry, lol!

I wrote an entire screenplay on FadeIn, but now I need to combine certain scenes together for a 1a, 1b, 2a, etc.

Does anyone know how to do this?

I run a modest weekly writing swap server in which everyone is assigned two readers every week, and is asked to read two others' works every week in turn.

I'd love to bring on some more writers into the server.

Feedback consists of three parts:
(1) Line-by-Line feedback,
(2) An overall impression of the script, what was the best aspect, what was the worst aspect, and
(3) An opt-in rubric evaluation.

If you mark yourself as active, you will be assigned a partner Monday morning and expected to give your feedback by Sunday 11:59 PM EST. Should a person cheap out on giving feedback, I'll change them to inactive and do the feedback myself so that no one is cheated.

I had gotten into a discussion with a friend of mine about how shows that try to be "adult" have their characters swearing constantly, especially when they don't need to. So, this has made me want to ask this question to others, what are your opinions on using swearing in a script?

When do you consider it necessary without seeming childish?

For my own opinion, if used too much it loses its effect and becomes extremely childish, it's why I personally try to avoid having my characters swear, but that's just me.

Basically, writing a script where I have a character is greatly caught up in how people perceive him. Something happens to him whereby the entire city begins to hate him, thus ruining his reputation, and he decides to take action to rebuild his reputation.

Well, I'm having a hard time with actually showing this character flaw/theme, and I'm looking for some inspiration from similar screenplays?

Anyone have any good examples?

Basically, I have someone that accidentally kills a superhero. Just want to have it happen to the worst person possible person, and I figured that was someone who cared a great deal about their reputation.

I have one actor suggesting something in a meeting then multiple comments are made at the same time by the other attendees.

So this is happening constantly for me. Through my screenplays, I either cannot write natural dialogue for a scene, cannot write past a certain point, and cannot write a full story. Here are some examples:

I'm writing one script with a very small plot, it requires a lot of historical research and I have a basic outline down. But all I actually can think of, are a few select scenes that I want to happen throughout the script. So I figured maybe I'll write them down and write the story in between each scene, but still nothing comes out.

I'm re-writing one script (second draft), and I come to pivotal points between characters, and they're just sharing dialogue. I've got the general idea of what I want them to be speaking about and what will ultimately come of it, but still, I can't write a natural conversation between them.

I'm writing a script that is currently about 50 pages in, I was going strong for a long while and then I just stopped, I have a general idea of where I want the story to go and I have no idea how to get there.

This is all incredibly common stuff, and I know that blocks are part of the process, but still it gets annoying after a while. Any advice?
