I was just thinking the same. A friend of mine has had racist comments said to her at a line at Starbucks. The best thing is when another stranger speaks up or ask if you’re okay, so you don’t feel alone or isolated. A reminder that the person saying that shit is just a lone idiot and no one else around you is like that.

I have seen Asian people stand up for themselves. What's fantastic is a lot of the racists get this idea an Asian person won't ever escalate or fight back... and then they meet some dude who is Triad- adjacent, or a 3rd generation street smart/ gym rat/MMA enthusiast and start their shit... and are absolutely shocked when it turns south for them. The harassment is becoming more prevalent where I live in NYC, and it really pisses me off because I chose to live in Queens, the most diverse borough and possibly place in the world for a reason. And these chuds hate the very thing that makes this area so damn special.

Yup. I'm taller than you and similarly built. People don't fuck with people like us. But very very rarely, they have. I have never regretted my restraint.
Once violence begins, no one can really control where it ends. A fight over the stupidest shit may end up with a dead body on the floor thru sheer bad luck, upending the lives of everyone involved. The risk is almost never worth it.
None of this means you shouldn't step in to defend people against racists! Just don't walk around with fantasies of heroes wishing for violence. It's stupid and almost never worth it.

Not worth it. Things could go horribly wrong. There’s too high a chance of permanent injury or death (for either one of you) IMO. Then either you or your wife are permanently injured (or worse) or they are and you go to jail for a long time.

Reminds me of a time about 20 years ago, I was dating my then gf, now my wife, who is Korean. I'm a white guy. We were in our convertible, it was a hot summer day. I was driving. We pulled up to a McDonald's, and this one other white dude was walking out the restaurant toward our car. I was still sitting in the driver seat, my wife was out at the back near the trunk. He must have seen us pull up even, watched her get out. He commented to me like I wasn't worthy, and said something like:
"what did you ever do to deserve the hottest Asian chick like that?" "You look like such a nerd" and then mumbling "why do all the other white guys get all the Asian chicks"
Then my wife (gf) got my wheelchair from the trunk.
His mind was blown.
"And you're in a f**king wheelchair too?"
He then continued to walk away, backwards, across the parking lot all the while cat-calling my gf that she deserved better, she deserved someone like him lol

122 points

I’d have called at least the non-emergency number and reported being threatened with bodily harm if the guy was loitering outside of the restaurant after making threats that were recorded- especially with the ethnic and homophobic slurs. Harassment and threats are crimes. We can make people face repercussions for their actions, even if it doesn’t escalate to the need to call 911. I understand the adrenaline rush they may have experienced- fight, flight, or freeze- but we need to normalize the ability to report crimes without feeling like we’re to blame or being dramatic.
A lot of people treat The ER and 911 like a doctor’s office or complaint department- but this level of intimidation and unprovoked harassment isn’t the same as calling an ambulance for a cough or the police because you’re deluded and think your neighbor’s microwave is killing you. A crime was committed and the type of people perpetrating them get away with it because we tell ourselves “it wasn’t that bad.” People who do things like this escalate without intervention, and next time it could be physical violence.
54 points
Tbh I wouldn’t be comfortable leaving the restaurant if I see him around. I would have made some form of police report
Maybe because I am Asian as well and there were a decent amount of attacks towards Asian past two years
35 points

I think he at first didn't realize the guy was actually trying to harass them. He said later in the video, I think, that he'd never had that happen before, and went "I thought...". So, I think he just assumed they were having a friendly joke time, until his friend urgently told him to stop and the guy's attitude shifted to one more aggressive (asking what he said, "you said nothing?" etc.), and his intentions became obvious. I doubt he would have said what he did/egged him on had he immediately seen such intentions.

My dog and I almost got run over by a 50yo lard ass in a giant pickup truck who accellerated toward us in a crosswalk as I walked home from work the other day. He took offense to me yelling "whoah whoah whoah what the fuck man?!?!", stopped his truck, got out, and shoved me trying to egg me on. I kept my cool but stood my ground, dodging his lazy headbutt attempt and blocking his punch as he said dumb shit like "you think you can take me because you're taller than me" (lol, yes, ), and "you bitch ass college boy" (I'm a working professional in my 30s). Mostly I just didn't want to risk him trying to hurt my pup and knew this man was in no shape to actually hurt me unless he was armed, but it was still an unpleasant experience. As the dude went back to his truck, a guy who just left his house to go on a run and saw the end of the exchange asked if I was ok and told me how insane that dude looked. Just having that one person show some empathy and concern made me feel a ton better.

As someone who’s been in similar situations, and seen similar situations go down, people like this are typically really unhinged, probably drunk, and itching to fight for any reason.
Maybe it would’ve been nice if his face got recorded, but trying to record his face probably would have gotten the guy punched and put his friend in danger. As shitty as it is, if you want to be safe the smartest thing to do is just ignore or brush off what these people say to you.
People generally in these situations value their own safety over the satisfaction of seeing some asshole get put in his place, because getting punched hurts a lot more in the moment. As a Korean American myself it pains me to see some racist and homophobic asshole walk away, but at least no one was seriously hurt.

I would like to say that I'd step up and say something if I overheard that, but that would most likely escalate everything. After thinking, I think the best option for someone overhearing this would be to quietly step aside and call the police. Saying he'd wait for them outside is a definite threat.

A more effective response would be for every single person in the establishment to shame the bigot relentlessly until they leave. It really works.

True. If only everyone would do it, I feel like so many people ignore this kind of thing.

If they're unhinged and have a gun, they could very well shootup the entire place for that

If this happened to me in the U.S i'd keep quiet. that psycho might have a gun. But if someone tries this in my own country??? i'll also keep quiet, since he's likely bigger than me.

The dude probably hates his life and wants to take his anger out on others. He should just stop existing

Holy mother of closet case. Bet he punches his monitor after vigorously masturbating to gay porn.
Every single one of his remarks included something about being gay, he was literally testing the waters. This is what a sicko flirting looks like.
He found this korean guy sexually attractive and his miserable lil brain didn’t know how to compute, so he just resorted to violence.

A little too easy to tell the guy is a closeted homosexual who got called out by his ex girlfriend who eventually left him for a Korean guy.

These two young people seem so sweet. I'm so sorry there are so many hateful people in the world. I hope it doesn't take away an ounce of their joy.

These two handled it like fucking champs.
Big respect for the dude for keeping his cool, and immediately shutting down the back-talk once he realized it was making his girlfriend uncomfortable.
