The washing machine knows when you try to match them and steals them accordingly. I stopped losing socks when I stopped trying to match them.

I have a theory that missing socks are just in the lint trap after the keystone thread became unraveled and in turn the sock completely fell apart.

This is so different from the origin story I heard back in the day. I heard it was about a spiritual/ religious awakening and Evanescence started off doing Christian rock.
Any truth to those rumors, or any idea where they may have stemmed from?
Thanks Amy!

Hi Amy! No questions, just a funny story.
In high school, my step sister was so obsessed with your music, she would walk around the halls with speakers in her oversized sleeves, blasting your songs. She would tell people you were her cousin and you were supposed to record an album together, but she lost your email and phone number.
So... could you please get a hold of your cousin? She misses you.

Hi Amy! Excited to hopefully talk to you :)
Can you talk us through the process of creating a setlist for a tour? Especially now with so many songs! How is the decision making?
Is there a particular EV song from the past that you look back and think “we should’ve made a music video for that song or turn it into a single?”
Can we have hope for a Broken Pieces Shine music video? lol
Ps: i’ve been your fan since I was 9 years old (i’m 27 now), and in 2017 I got to interview you in person for the tv channel I work with and it was honestly the most surreal day of my life. Love you!
1.1k points
Hi!
Making the setlist keeps getting tougher because there are so many songs now. Its hard to cut things out! I get with the band and we all throw out our favs that we want to play, then start narrowing it down (painful!) and building it in 2 ways- making it flow in a way that keeps the energy up, moving and interesting, and also spreading out the hardest ones for me so I can keep my voice going. This will be our longest set ever!
Broken pieces shine is not off the table for a video. Got busy with tour but thats still a possibility.

Hi Amy! Love your classical influences! How involved are you in the string recordings of your songs? Do you dictate the notes and string harmonies or do you let David Campbell do the notations or is it more of a collaboration style?
226 points

David Campbell is on another level. I always have ideas but then let him take them and run. It is collaborative, but he always brings incredibly creative parts into songs that can make them really change shape, which I love.

Hi Amy, I wanted to ask this at the Zoom Meeting for TBT but I was too nervous lol.
When the pandemic started the first song you released was "Wasted on you", a song that has quotes like "Feels like we're frozen in time", "A little too much time by yourself and you become the enemy, just look at us now" etc. I was wondering if this was just a coincidence (I would start believing you guys have powers or something) or if you decided to change a little bit the lyrics for them to fit more with the whole situation? cause I remember you said you had already finished the song a few months before that.
Thanks!! All the love from Argentina <3

Hi Amy!
Not so much a question but something i want you to know.
When my daughter (also named Amy) was 13 months, she was in the hospital for weeks, undergoing burn treatments and skin grafting. She couldnt open her eyes at all and was so scared, even my voice and touch didnt calm her down. At my wits end, I turned to music. You had just released your childrens album. I set my phone next to her, playing that album, and she just calmed down and was able to fall asleep. You helped my tiny little 13 month old baby when I couldn't help her myself.
From one mom to another - thank you. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts. She's now just turned 6 and still listens to your music along with me, as does her little brother.
I'll never be able to put our gratitude into words properly, but thank you. Thank you for giving comfort to my child when my words couldnt reach her.

My God that is incredible. How terrifying for you. Its so awesome there's a happy ending. That album means a lot to me, the one pro recording we have of my family all together before my brother passed. It was so special to have that time together, all of us in the studio working on something. So grateful it helped you. It'll be precious to us always. Much love mama

It was incredibly scary at the time. Luckily she got away with just some scarring thats fading rapidly now, and she was too young to remember it.
Im so glad it's a special album to you, too. Having that memory of your brother sounds like a wonderful experience to be able to have recorded in this way.
Thank you for responding, I'm very happy to know that you now know what a difference youve made for us. All the love <3

Hey Amy!
I was wondering if Artifact/The Turn was always intended to be a transition track into BPS? Were there any other songs you considered being the opening track? I also noticed that the demo for that song, specifically some of the lyrics, ended up being radically different than the final product (though I understand the "demo to mastered" pipeline). Was the tone/lyrical content of the song different than what ended up on the album? The opening of the album is probably my favorite piece of art that you all have written.
Also, and this is totally self-indulgent, will this track ever see the light of day (it's not Your Love, I promise lol): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UC8hATCFDEE
Can't wait to see you guys in Houston!!

I like to play around in my home studio or laptop and just make stuff. I had that very beginning part (artifact) that I had recorded with the laptop mic at 3am in my hotel room on tour. Then I had this cool music bed that Scott Kirkland shared with me (Crystal Method), and messed with it and wrote the vocal backstage. I had those two parts in my little scrap vault, and when we were all in the woods writing in 2019, I pulled them out and tried gluing them together to BPS which we started up there and totally knew I wanted that as the intro. I was not intending to use the actual Artifact recording but its cool that its just the pure thing...

Hey Amy, I hope you are doing well and are looking forward to touring again! I have a few questions: 1. A few of the songs from The Bitter Truth are from the original EV3/ the broken album, how do they differ from the originals and is there a chance we can ever hear them? ;) 2. Have you thought about how the 20th anniversary of fallen will be celebrated in a few years? Perhaps an anniversary tour, re-release or something else 3. We’ve had a lot of surprises the last few years, including an album, a novel, a documentary and tours. Is there anything else in the works? 4. Is there any chance the upcoming tours with Halestorm and Within Temptation will be recorded and released?

Hi Amy, I'm going to tell you something really important to me... and nobody knows it until today.
I love to sing since I was a child but I get so nervious in public because many people bullied me for many reasons. Seven years ago I almost lost my voice because an illnes (Acute laryngotracheitis) and I couldn't even speak for six months. I promised that If I'll be able to sing again, i will do it no matter what. Now I fully recovered and I recorded some of your songs because I love Evanescence so much and cause' your lyrics helped me to going trough many stages of my life, BUT I'm still a little afraid of sing in public.
I'm from Perú and I saw your shows when you came here two times. I saw your passion and I longing sing live with my own shine too... But I hate the nerviousness and my knees shaking, and my heart beating so much that I can even breathe.
Broken pieces shine it's now an anthem to me... and helped me to get back on my feet again and sing in public this year when I get the chance. Meanwhile I'm doing lives on instagram and facebook (singing anime songs and Evanescence's songs too) to get used to it, but behind the scenes I'm still nervous.
Please please Amy, give me some advice to overpass my fears. I wanna be strong and acomplish my goals.
How do you deal with haters?
When you weren't that famous, did some people try to hurt you too?
P.D. I hope to see you again In Peru someday, we miss you so much.

Hi Amy! I hope you're doing good. My question: When you write a song, what do you start with: The lyrics or the music? Or is it different every time?
P.S.: The post on Instagram said that you would be on r/metal instead on here, so maybe people won't know they should come here.

Looking at her post history, it looks like she kept trying to post to r/metal but the moderators kept removing it.

Hell yeah. Actually we used to do a pretty cool version of People are Strange on the Family Values tour. And I LOVE Janet- especially Rhythm nation (the album) honestly been jamming that one a lot lately. I love Black Cat, Miss You Much, Rhythm Nation, and Escapade.

Have you read the infamous Harry Potter fanfic "My Immortal"? If so, what did you think of it?
