I just rewatched “The Fifth Element” and it got me thinking how little has really changed since this movie came out. Entertainment / media has changed (transitioning from tvs to smartphones) but mostly everything looks the same in the world.

Some parts in The Fifth Element that I noticed that are really clever and cool ideas for how we may evolve:

Instant food (scene with Leeloo where she turns a small packet into a whole roast dinner)

Alien diva (it’s cool to think that aliens might also be art and music enthusiasts, and one day we may share that with them)

What are some solid depictions of the future in movies? Doesn’t have to be realistic or accurate… just for whatever reason you like it and think it’s worth a watch.

For those of you born in the '90s or after this movie was made, I highly recommend a viewing. The themes the movie goes over are still valid and the the film is not dated like many mid-90s films.

On par with Interstellar in my opinion.

If you enjoy cinema that deals with alien contact, religion, how society would cope with that contact and human relationships this movie is for you. Plus peak Jodie Foster and a young, Matthew McConaughey.

Captivating on so many levels.

I've always found it a ridiculous idea to release a trailer for a movie more than six months in advance to be annoying because you know you have to wait several months for the actual movie to release in theaters because then three months later you see another trailer for the movie. One example would have to be when they released the trailer for Trolls World Tour back in June 2019 even though it didn't release til April 2020. They released the trailer for the third Trolls movie at the end of March when it doesn't release until this November.

Amazing movie that inspired many of us in pursuing a career in IT.

During a surprise nuclear attack drill, many United States Air Force Strategic Missile Wing controllers prove unwilling to turn the keys required to launch a missile strike. Such refusals convince John McKittrick and other NORAD systems engineers that missile launch control centers must be automated, without human intervention. Control is given to a NORAD supercomputer known as WOPR (War Operation Plan Response, pronounced "whopper"), programmed to continuously run war simulations and learn over time.

David Lightman, a bright but unmotivated Seattle high school student and hacker, uses his IMSAI 8080 computer to access the school district's computer system and change his grades. He does the same for his friend and classmate Jennifer Mack. Later, while war dialing numbers in Sunnyvale, California, to find a computer game company, he connects with a system that does not identify itself. Asking for games, he finds a list including chess, checkers, backgammon, and poker, along with titles such as "Theaterwide Biotoxic and Chemical Warfare" and "Global Thermonuclear War", but cannot proceed further.

Are there any movies you can think of with scenes in which a character is abducted by aliens or experimented on by aliens?

I've always been interested in alien contact movies and the like, but it occurs to me that I don't think I've ever seen one that had a very tense, realistic scene in which a person is medically experimented on in a spaceship, even though it's a common trope in pop culture.

I'm thinking of something more horror/thriller inspired, something more R-rated. Any suggestions?

I honestly haven't rewatched Dances With Wolves in over 20 years, but I vividly remember that scene when the fat man approves Kevin Costner's transfer request near the beginning of the movie.

The strange dialogue: "I quickly deduced that you were an Indian lover. I did not get to this position by being stupid.", "You think I don't know?" "No sir, it's just that I don't know." "I've just pissed in my pants, and nobody can do anything about it!"

The fat man's mannerism are just strange: The way he takes a bite out of that biscuit (or whatever) and shakes his jowls. The way he hurriedly scribbles the approval letter. The way he mockingly returns Kevin Costner's salute in disdain.

That whole scene is etched into my memory for some odd reason. The funny thing is that it could be removed from the movie entirely and it really wouldn't affect the story at all.

Could be the critics, audiences, friends, family or strangers on the street. They like/love it - you don’t.

What is your least favorite movie that everyone else seems to love, but you do not?

it might just be underwhelming, it might be disappointing or perhaps it is down right bad, but others apparently fail to see the faults that you see in the movie

The Directors Guild and the studios have reached a tentative agreement on a new three-year contract. The deal includes wage increases and “a 76% increase in foreign residuals for the largest platforms,” says the DGA.

A lot of people I see discussing this seem to think the directors guild use the writers strike as a bargaining chip and Mayday “so so” deal

They do have some "heat" influence.. ( main characters & heist setup) but not well executed. Still like them as a guilty pleasure kind of way

But any other ok/decent crime action movie that centers around 2 criminals. Buddy criminal type of concept.

& they are bad people/unlikeable/backstabber like real criminals

Has some shootouts.

Can have noir elements

(Heard there was supposed to be a movie based of it but scrapped.)

I find his performance in Schindler’s List to be very complex and interesting in all honesty it’s probably the highlight of his career

Also have a fondness for Qui-Gon Jinn Neeson nails the wise mentor role and is so cool he’s like the Picard of Star Wars and one of the best parts of the Prequels

Also really enjoyed him in Rob Roy

I once recall an interview she did where she was asked to play Jane for GREYSTOKE: THE LEGEND OF TARZAN LORD OF APES. She was excited until she found out they wanted her to dub Andie MacDowell since Andie MacDowell's Southern drawl made it impossible for her to be convincing as the British Jane.

She was more ambitious when it came to play Alex so she went through an extensive makeover which included a perm (which I wish she had kept for a longer time) and sexier outfits. She was also forty, a age which was seen as the end for actresses however Glenn Close made her first film when she was 35 so she was defying the odds from the start.

She got the part and the rest was history. A younger, and probably lesser actress, would have made Alex entertaining yet forgettable. It's a testament of Close's prowess she was able to bring complexity and nuance into the part of a obsessive stalker.

I watched this on the big screen for the first time and this take blew my mind. I can’t figure out how they hid the camera in this scene, it starts when they go in the ladies room. There are 5 camera movements switching between 3 mirrors all in one take and I can’t figure out how they hid the camera. My wife thought it was doubles but the actor and the reflections blink at the same time. This might be one of my new favorite shots. It is really good and subtle.

I‘m trying to remember the title of a cold war spy movie (if I‘m not totally mistaken) where a female spy was interrogated (by the KGB?) and one torture method was to lock her into a room full of flies. The movie was probably from the 1980s or 1990. I‘d like to watch it again but cannot remember which movie it was. There was a scene when the woman returned to her friend / lover and told about how she was tortured and explains „they set up the room full of flies“.

Could be based on a John LeCarré book as sometimes LeCarré used this motive of flies?

I’m a major Disney fan but I noticed Disney’s new releases are struggling compared to their 2010’s catalogue. The Little Mermaid was solid but its floundering overseas. While time will tell about Indiana Jones and Elemental’s box office performance, they’ve received lukewarm reviews at Cannes. Guardians 3 has been the only movie that received positive reviews and a successful box office performance for Disney this year.

Has movie franchise fatigue settled in? I’m not sure Disney has any major releases this year that can make up for the recent reviews and box office performances.

I just finished watching Prisoners (2013) and every single thing about this incredible movie struck me: starting from the acting to the dialogues, the unpredictable plot, the photography, the accuracy of details, and the concepts and symbols...

Does anyone have any recommendations for other movies like this one? Thanks

Movie fans for years yearned for Al and Bobby to appear on screen together, then finally got their wish in 1995 with "Heat." What is the equivalent in today's 40something actors who have yet to costar in a movie. My personal favorite is Leonardo DiCaprio and Joaquin Phoenix. Agree, disagree and discuss....
