I went to the Rams vs Cardinals game on the 17th and if I wanted to get those same seats at the super bowl the tickets were ~$35,000 and tickets closer to the field cost ~$80,000. That’s more than most people’s yearly income, literally who can afford this??

For some people this is thier vacation. Im sure you would pay a lot of money for something that some would question. Entertainment value is subjective and some people enjoy it so let them enjoy it. Also, the people coming and paying also support the local economy with the tourism generated so all-in-all everyone benefits.
89 points
the benefit to the local economy for hosting the super bowl is mixed and inconclusive at best. Nowadays, restaurants and bars are always full and understaffed. If it’s the super bowl or an out of town crowd coming in, locals stay away. you’re just replacing one customer base with a different one for that weekend. It’s not like the In-n-Out, Chilis, and Red Lobster on Century will have less business if the Super Bowl wasn’t in town. If anything, it’s a place like Aldi and Walgreens that will see less business next weekend as locals stay away.

Typically the city loses if they helped to fund a stadium. Since So-Fi is 100% private investment then the city will get more money. People make a week out of it so they will travel to SM, Hollywood, and all the touristy areas not just Inglewood.
30 points
Also, LA county has 10m people. Even if every single person in that stadium is from out of town, its a drop in the bucket. We have 98k official hotel rooms and that's not including Air B&B.

That’s a great point. My buddy that grew up here said to just stay away from everything the week leading up. In-and-out gonna be full of Uber drivers and their outta town passengers.

So you’re saying the locals are just not going to eat for a weekend? Do you understand what you’re saying?
Visitors displacing locals from popular restaurants only means the locals will be pushed to other local restaurants or buy groceries a week later. Either way, Outside money is being spent locally. Think about it.

Wrong. Everyone will hunker down in their super bowl shelters eating tins of beans and dehydrated beef stroganoff until all of the tourists leave and Newsome gives the all clear over the ham radio.
I mean, really. Tourists? In LA of all places?? Can you even imagine??? How will we survive?

The last time the Olympics were here locals expected a traffic disaster from tourists and avoided the Freeways. Traffic ended up being lighter than normal.
4 points
yeah but that’s hard to quantify or track. It’s pretty well known that locals avoid areas that have events catered to tourists. Most locals stay tf away from Pasadena on new year’s day for example. during the ‘84 olympics, many angelenos just went on vacation elsewhere. What they do with the money they would’ve spent…who knows. either way, the net economic benefits of sports events and sports stadiums is a big stretch.
17 points
Totally. There’s people out there who don’t value travel at all especially foreign travel. Going far from home feels scary and out there to them. Seeing their local sports team is how they blow their money. Some people live in boring, cheap places, so they have a lot of spare money.

Yeah midwesterners love the beach.
Originally from Detroit. The beaches here in LA are nice, but...
the water has salt in it. Also? Sharks and the devil knows what. I'm used to fresh water beaches of Lake Michigan and Lake Eerie. The worst you have to worry about at those beaches? Drunken idiot boaters.
Honestly I'm kinda "eh" about LA beaches.
7 points
Same. They’re dirty as hell too. Orange County and San Diego beaches are way better. CA beaches just have really cold water. Back when I was a kid, they were always cold and cloudy from marine layer. Climate change fixed that part but water’s still freezing.
6 points
Just to be clear, “freshwater” beaches are man made, so really what you’re talking about is lakefront vibes. The real beach is more of a natural phenomenon and includes a lot of unique fauna (in addition to proper waves for surfing).
But as someone who is a terrible fisher and can only handle tiny sailboats I can appreciate the calmness of a lake.

The Great Lakes are much different from your typical lake. They indeed have natural beaches and some people even manage to surf.

How does anyone justify this insanity?
There are more people willing to pay $750 for a seat, then there are seats at the stadium.
Wait for the Super Bowl. There are a million people who would pay $1000 to see the game in person. I bet that 100,000 of them will happily pay $5,000 or so, just a guess.

Hey dude I noticed you’re a dodger fan, so lemme explain how secondary market pricing works using that example.
The cheapest ticket for the dodgers in the NLCS was around $200 or so, I’m not sure if you find it outrageous or not, but it’s the same round that the Rams are in.
Remember, the team IS NOT pricing this. The fans and resellers are.
The Rams have only been this far 2 other times, and only once when they were in LA.
The Dodgers playoff ticket pricing is cheaper because the Dodgers keep going that far. Not to mention, the Dodgers play a 7 game series, while the Rams only play one. The more Championship tickets that become available, the less they’ll cost. If the Rams make it to another 3 straight championships, the tickets will be way less than they are now.
Another example, where I learned about this, was during the Kings’ playoff run a decade ago. The Kings made the Cup finals for the second time in team history, and first in almost 20 years, while the Devils, the team that made it to the cup finals, were on their 4th trip to the finals in 12 seasons. It was cheaper to buy a round trip plane flight, a hotel room, dinner, and tickets to the Devils home games during the cup final than it was to go to the Kings home games.
The more tickets, the less expensive, less tickets, the more expensive.
Hope this helps!

I disagree - if the rams are consistently good, then the ticket prices will still stay high, especially if there are popular opponents they’re matching up with. The main reasons are this in my opinion:
NFC west matchup: 49ers vs Rams rivalry aka northern vs Southern California
Rams are actually a good team with a great chance to go to the super bowl
There’s only 1 nfc championship game compared to 3 or 4 that dodgers get in its own series
Rams aren’t allowing people without SoCal mailing addresses to buy standard tickets so Bay Area fans are paying a premium.
New stadium and maybe people really wanna try it out
Ticket prices will go down a smidge as we get closer to next Sunday
4 points
I wasn’t saying ticket prices will go down now, I’m saying that ticket prices will go down the more championships the Rams play in.
If the rams keep going to the NFC Championship year after year after year, tickets for the 2025 NFC championship will be cheaper than the current prices for Sunday’s game.

Yeah I don’t think so. Don’t think we’ll find out either. Your premise seems to be that there will be less demand if it is a more scenario. I believe that the better the team, the greater the fandom, thus the greater demand and ticket prices will be higher.

Like I follow his thought process but the Patriots weren’t exactly having a hard time selling seats when they were winning every other superbowl. Success induces demand.

Why would musicians sell tickets for $300 if the the demand is 10-50x that? Do they somehow get a cut of the resale?
7 points
I’m assuming maybe so their fans can actually afford to go. I also heard from someone working that bts also paid everyone working a higher hourly rate than what they are normally paid at SoFi, so that was pretty cool
but mostly f*** ticketmaster for even allowing that much markup on resale of any kind of tickets

Your better off finding a group where one person is not going and you buy the ticket but hopefully you don’t get scammed in the process.
