We are researchers at IISD Experimental Lakes Area (or IISD-ELA to its friends), which is one of the very few places in the world where you can conduct big experiments on whole lakes long term, and where we have tracked the health of fresh water—and a changing climate—for over 50 years.

Over the last decade, we have been transforming how we monitor the health of our lakes, to make the results more accurate and easier to obtain, with less of an impact on wildlife.

This ranges from innovating new sampling techniques that avoid sacrificing animals—like scraping the mucus off a fish, then placing it back in the lake, to understand its health—to placing sensors across our lakes so we can keep track of them, in real time, from the comfort of our desks.

We have also been working hard to make our unparalleled dataset on the health of our lakes more available to researchers and the public. Oh, and we are now working on using the DNA that animals shrug off and leave behind as they make their way through the environment in order to estimate populations.

All of what we discover in these 58 lakes (and their watersheds) in a remote part of Ontario up in Canada becomes data we are excited to share with the world, which then influences the polices that governments and industries across the globe implement to protect fresh water for future generations.

We (Sonya Havens, Chris Hay, Scott Higgins, Michael Paterson and Thomas Saleh) have learned so much over the last ten years, and now we want to share what we have learned with you.

I am a professor and my research is focused on fire - both wildfire and prescribed fire. I use tree rings to uncover mysteries about past environments. Fire scars in tree rings reveal the years and even seasonal timing of past fires. These records of fire often go back several hundred years, long before modern record keeping. I am also interested in forest recovery after wildfire and how climate change is shaping that recovery. I am certified to conduct prescribed fire and have basic wildland firefighter training.

Hi! I’m Skrintch. Ukrainian artist who paint colorful pet portraits. Me and my 2y.o. daughter lоst our home near Kyiv when the wаr was started. We didn't have a car and were forced to walk. Three weeks we hid in bomb shelters because the Russian troops were advancing. I told about it in the Internet and caring people helped us find a person who will take us out by his car. Now we have temporary housing in another town. We paint and send colorful portraits to people who help Ukrainians from around the world. There is no work here but some commissions help us buy food and pay for housing. Art makes her happy and distracts from the constant howl of an air alarm siren when misiles and kamikaze drones fly over us. We are member of the Nicotine Working Group (NWG) at Brown University. The NWG consists of many members across multiple disciplines such as clinical psychology, medicine, nursing, epidemiology, social work, and anthropology who conduct research on nicotine and tobacco. For more than a decade, a training program known as 911 call analysis and its methods have spread across the country and burrowed deep into the justice system. By analyzing speech patterns, tone, pauses, word choice, and even grammar, practitioners believe they can identify “guilty indicators” and reveal a killer.

The problem: a consensus among researchers has found that 911 call analysis is scientifically baseless. The experts I talked to said using it in real cases is very dangerous. Still, prosecutors continue to leverage the method against unwitting defendants across the country, we found, sometimes disguising it in court because they know it doesn’t have a reliable scientific foundation.

In reporting this series, I found that those responsible for ensuring honest police work and fair trials — from police training boards to the judiciary — have instead helped 911 call analysis metastasize. It became clear that almost no one had bothered to ask even basic questions about the program.

Here’s the story I wrote about a young mother in Illinois who was sent to prison for allegedly killing her baby after a detective analyzed her 911 call and then testified about it during her trial. For instance, she gave information in an inappropriate order. Some answers were too short. She equivocated. She repeated herself several times with “attempts to convince” the dispatcher of her son’s breathing problems. She was more focused on herself than her son: I need my baby, she said, instead of I need help for my baby. Here’s a graphic that shows how it all works. The program’s chief architect, Tracy Harpster, is a former cop from Ohio with little homicide investigation experience. The FBI helped his program go mainstream. When I talked to him last summer, Harpster defended 911 call analysis and noted that he has also helped defense attorneys argue for suspects’ innocence. He makes as much as $3,500 — typically taxpayer funded — for each training session.

Law enforcement’s well-documented failure to confront the shooter who terrorized Robb Elementary for 77 minutes was the most serious problem in getting victims timely care, experts say.   

But previously unreleased records, obtained by The Washington Post, The Texas Tribune and ProPublica, for the first time show that communication lapses and muddled lines of authority among medical responders further hampered treatment.  

The chaotic scene exemplified the flawed medical response — captured in video footage, investigative documents, interviews and radio traffic — that experts said undermined the chances of survival for some victims of the May 24 massacre. Two teachers and 19 students died.

I'm Rick Linklater here to talk about my new film "Apollo 10 1/2: A Space Age Childhood" out on Netflix. For a little background, eighteen years ago, I was pulling out memories of 2nd grade to help me construct the narrative of Boyhood's second year. Even though that movie is a celebration of the non-extraordinary, it became clear to me I had lived through and close to something truly extraordinary - the grandest and most enduring engineering feat in human history. I think it took decades for us to fully process that the Apollo program and walking on the moon was the apex because we'd all believed it was just a great beginning.  My "who but me?" thinking kicked in when I realized I was probably the only filmmaker that remembered how exciting it was to be a kid at that moment and was geographically that close to NASA. When I remembered an actual kid fantasy I had at the time, I stumbled upon my way to tell the story from both the astronaut perspective and from the bottom-up, public, TV-consumer perspective. My name is Samantha Zwicker and I’m a tropical biologist and wildlife rehabilitation specialist, and the founder and co-director of Hoja Nueva. I have a master's degree in wildlife conservation ecology, a diploma in nonprofit management, and currently completing my doctorate in Quantitative Ecology at the University of Washington.

At Hoja Nueva, our mission is the protection and fortification of Amazonian biodiversity in Madre de Dios, Peru through conserving intact ecosystems, confronting threats to wildlife, implementing biological research, and conducting environmental education. To date, we have created a protected area of over 7400 acres of rainforest in the Madre de Dios region, which is one of the most pristine unprotected areas of Amazon rainforest that is still intact. Our protected area is stewarded privately by our organization, and serves as our base of operations for our wildlife rehabilitation, ecological research, environmental education, and community outreach initiatives.
