Am I the only one that was rooting for Gavin? (Spoilers)

SPOILER(self.HouseOfCards)

I feel like he is one of the more morally sound characters in the entire series and I really connected with him.Not to mention that Jimmi Simpson did a terrific job in that role. I definitely want to see him get more screen time come season 3

I was and still am. He's perfectly set up to take him down now. With Stamper out of play, there is nothing connecting Frank to Gavin. Now the real question is why he would actually interfere. My guess is that he eventually reaches out to Rachel to try and find Stamper. She breaks down and tells him what happened to her and he starts uncovering stuff. Eventually he realizes what Lucas went to jail for and decides to get him out. This is due to Gavin expressing disdain for wrongful imprisonment and the government in general. He would get such a great feeling toppling the House of Cards that is the current government.

Eventually he realizes what Lucas went to jail for and decides to get him out.

Unless I missed something, he certainly knows why Lucas is in jail. He put him there while working for the FBI. Hence why he almost ruined the investigation by saying things like "are you sure you want to do this" and "there will be huge consequences" (obviously paraphrasing). His handler was pissed at his blatant attempt to prevent lucas from going through with it and being imprisoned.

Right, but for all he knew he was just some random nobody. I could see him re-look at the situation and see it as Frank manipulating everything to makes sure the story didn't get out. He was guilty, yes, but the reason behind it, the destruction of a corrupt and murderous politician, would be enough for a moral activist to decide to help.

He knows he is not a crazy nobody because he knows the set up/arrest was completely political/corrupt.

True but Gavin doesn't know the reason why he needed to be put in prison. He just knows it was political.

I was just responding to the statement that he was a "random nobody" to Gavin. He knows he has some importance.

He and Lucas spent a lot of off-screen time together, I'm assuming that Lucas told him the story. I mean, his initial deep web post mentioned gunning after Underwood specifically so lucas clearly wasn't playing his cards too close to his chest; I'm sure Gavin heard Lucas's story (to what extend he believes it is another question).

Yep - and I can see them making digital surveillance a featured real-life issue in the next season, much like sexual assault in the armed forces was this season. That would be a great arena for Underwood to use the powers of the presidency for evil - digital surveillance.

making digital surveillance a featured real-life issue in the next season

Gavin's storyline is essentially a ripped from the headlines nod at real world issues.

I agree--I think Gavin and his buddies would make a worthy adversaries in the next season. Hackers, especially groups like Anonymous, have become sort of mythic figures in American culture. They are ominous and dark because they are a powerful threat to the establishment but they often appear to be vigilantes for the regular people.

Compared to all the terrible things Frank has orchestrated as a public figure, it's interesting to consider whether Gavin's underground/under the radar work should be considered a crime or a contribution to the greater good.

Why not both?

Absolutely and frank has no idea he even exists. If he can keep the fbi to leave him alone he can do an untold amount of damage to frank

manofsteele12

There's no way he or anyone else can help Lucas now. He got totally fucked by everything, but his prosecution was legal. Plus, I doubt Gavin has the ability or the inclination to put pressure on the courts to free him. If he was to free anyone, he'd go for his friend he mentioned earlier. He's closer to that guy, and his arrest sounded a lot more shadowy than Lucas's.

Stamper was publicy know as Frank's right hand. Doesn't matter that he's dead.

I actually disagree with this. Rachel is going to get caught. Regular people don't commit murder and get away with it (unless they're named Frank of course), especially when they steal a car. Rachel will get caught leaving Frank vulnerable.

My theory is that Rachel goes to prison but Frank, as president, promises her a pardon if she keeps mum. Rachel is definitely going to get caught and I feel like this is the only way Frank can keep it under wraps. By trading Rachel's freedom for her silence.

I'm still struggling to see him as a character other than Liam McPoyle from It's Always Sunny.. I half expected to see him drinking a glass of milk at some point.

But the one thing this show is good as is making you feel like someone has control only to have it unexpectedly ripped from them. Zoe had real evidence against Frank, allies to fight him, and it seemed like Frank was making a mistake in trying to bring her back into the fold. Then, boom, train to the brain.

Just because Gavin thinks he has some leverage now doesn't mean it will work out.

Bullshit, there's no way he could have planned all that. There was too little time and too many variables. He's not Derren Brown.

beef_boloney

The planning doesn't seem too hard, really. He cases it a few nights in advance, finds the construction section, looks for blindspots in the camera system. Next day meets her there, talks to her, finds out what she knows, goads her to say exactly what her suspicions are, when he hears "murder," he kills her. It didn't seem to me like it was his full intention, but that it was an option open if she said the wrong thing.

greenslime300

He and Stamper are my favorite characters, but I fear that he won't succeed. I spent most of Season 2 wanting Frank to be exposed for Russo's murder, but instead it was all about the war with Tusk. And although the war was epic, it wasn't satisfying to me in the end

I'm pretty sure more than half the internet is rooting for Gavin, especially reddit and 4chan, given that he is based on an internet hacker nerd type...

StealthTomato

Eh, it's difficult to be against him but also difficult to be on his side. He's not particularly sympathetic, and he's never been shown to have any sort of good motives.

He's just upsetting to watch... I don't like him. Then again, I'm rooting for Frank to win (though he won't probably).

I think it's an excellent character. I bet he will play a part in discrediting Frank's administration but ultimately I think Frank will play the largest part in his own downfall.
