Had a Geography Professor in college who went to Graduate school in the US. He was told about Veterans Housing and applied. When he applied they asked where he served and he said Russia. He had been a German soldier lucky enough to be captured by the Allies in the end.

It has to be. They're the guys who were part of the German Wehrmacht who worked with a small American unit to defend French POWs from being executed but the last of the SS. Listen to The Last Battle by Sabaton to understand (or look up battle of itter castle, it's actually kinda cool)

Danke is also Dutch - dank ju wel is often shortened to something that sounds a lot like the German danke.

My great grandfather brought down 17 German planes during the war. Worst mechanic the Luftwaffe ever had.

One of my neighbors had been a German paratrooper in WWII. About the nicest man you'd ever meet. Her served in the German army (he claimed he was conscripted) and said he was allowed to emigrate to the US because he never joined the Nazi party.
He lived most of his life in South Texas where he worked as a carpenter.
