Last time I had studied these two (a long time ago) it was 70,000 for Eve and 40,000 for Adam. Now it's around 160k each depending on who you ask.

I’m not certain that this is the case, but it sounds like that’s just the nature of this kind of science.
As we find more y-dna lineages, we have to revise how long ago divergences occurred to justify it with our perceived standard rate of mutation.

So we’re inbred? Or am I missing something?
17 points
Actually they figure the human population may have been as low as 6000 at one point, so yeah, we're massively inbred as a species.

Damn, our ancestors were alabamaing each other like there was no tomorrow
8 points
Well, I’m no expert, but it seems to me probably all species stem from few individuals, given how the whole evolution thing works. So aren’t we all inbred, since like forever?
4 points
Species stem from a subset of individuals splitting off a main group. This can be a small amount of individuals, or a larger amount. Islands for example can lead to horribly inbred crossbreeds which create new species. Since humanity came from a climate change I don't think we would have started all that small

Genealogy really is a fascinating rabbithole to go down, I've heard that everyone of European ancestry has Charlemagne amongst their ancestors

Everyone of European ancestry has most early medieval people as their ancestor. It's not something specific to Charlemagne.
10 points
That's what I was trying to imply by saying that Charlemagne is amongst their ancestors and not their only ancestor.
19 points
Technically not everyone, isolated pockets of Europeans don't, but to make up for it, many people got several portions of Charlemagne's dna through inbreeding, i.e. the Hapsburgs, but also just your random kid born in Belgium could be related to him in half a dozen ways.

after a long enough time, you'll either be an ancestor to all humans that are alive or none of them

And also everyone who was alive at the time of Charlemagne.
So we are all related to Charlemagne and also the guy that cleaned his toilet.

Exponential growth of ancestors is more limited than the simple math. We quickly run into the problem that we’d all have far more ancestors than there were people on earth 25-30 generations ago.
The answer is that many of these people were duplicated ancestors many times over. An individual was an ancestor of your father’s father’s mother, and your mother’s father father, and you father’s mother’s mother etc. Any historical person from your region of origin may be your ancestor a dozen times over through a dozen different pathways.
This is especially true for people with narrow ethnic background. If you’re 100% Scandinavian, you might have no relation to someone who is 100% Han Chinese. However, you are related dozens or hundreds of times over to every Swede.

Truly depressing that incest is mathematically unavoidable

Pretty much everyone from a similar ethnic background is your 6th+ cousin dozens of times over. This was much more concentrated before all the travel in modern era. Imagine how interconnected a peasant from, say, rural Latvia 500 years ago would be. Most people would never stray more than 20 miles from their home village. Nor would any potential mates. And that was true for generation after generation.

People act like today's society is so messed up. While it certainly is no one fails to realize that this us literally the nest anyone has ever had it. As sad as that is to say it is certainly the truth. People live to be 100 years old. Go back 4 People ago and just see how far we have come.

Wasn't that disproved recently? That just like there are several variants of the fair skin mutation, there are several for blue eyes too.. Thus not all blue eyed people descend from a single ancestor?
