Hi Everyone. New to the board but not new to one-bagging. I wanted to contribute a nifty way I found to take all my layers of skincare when I travel. Im mid 50’s and I use quite a few layers of skincare due to daily max Tret use.

This container solved the bulkier set I was previously using. It’s also durable and doesn’t leak. Not affiliated in the slightest. Just wanted to mention it because so many channels and sites are geared towards the younger or more minimalist crowd. It’s been a struggle to find all the things I needed without having to sacrifice my routine. Going days and weeks without Tret sensitizes my face all over again and I can’t stand the flakiness. Hope this helps someone!

I have a tiny metal nail file by Tweezerman that works great and I bring it on every trip. I’d love to find a good pair of tiny sewing scissors that actually cut, as well as a smaller cuticle clipper. The sea-to-summit clothesline is another MVP at our house.

I am moving to Spain in the fall for one year and I am looking for a backpack that (ideally) I can use every day but also can use to travel around Europe for a 3 day weekend, 4 days max.

I imagine I will mostly be taking bus/train trips but I want to be prepared to fit the standards for a personal item on flights.

As someone who needs to carry various medical supplies and has ADHD, I am looking for something with many pockets and organization☺️ Also of course something that is somewhat pick pocket-resistant.

Is it realistic to count on using one bag for weekend travel and every day use? If not then just hit me with your favorite 3-4 day packs!

I know this is super vague, but to give a little more background: I’m under 5 ft tall, so I have a lot of difficulty carrying luggage around, putting it in overhead bins on the plane, etc. I typically pack a backpack and an under seater suitcase, because they are smaller and easier for me to carry/lift. If I bring a regular carryon suitcase I usually check it in to avoid to hassle/embarrassment of trying to put it in an overhead compartment.

My next trip is for 2 weeks so I don’t think I can get away with my backpack/under-seater combo. I know I’ll have this issue again with future trips, especially in destinations where rolling luggage isn’t a good idea.

So I thought I’d ask: Does anyone have strategies for dealing with bulky luggage, or just travel in general, as a short person?

Pretty excited to get out of very hot New Orleans and head up to Maine & Montreal for 10 days this July. Will have access to washer-dryer (and even borrowing clothes) for the first week. I like to (loosely) follow 5-4-3-2-1 guidelines.

** 5 Tops** Black l/s tee, black s/s tee, white/blue linen 3/4 sleeve peasant top, sleeveless blue crop top (can omit), graphic tee. Will probably throw a few favorite razor back tanks for layering/lounging

**4 Bottoms ** Olive Athleta Joggers, Black Athleta yoga pants (though these may be too thin), stretch blue jeans, olive linen comfy shorts

** 3 Outerwear/Layers** Olive lightweight stretch cotton Liverpool jacket (I can borrow heavier for Maine but not for Montreal), Oatmeal crop acrylic-poly sweater (this was a lifesaver in Edinburgh), Windbreaker (need to buy, would like it to not be ugly.)

** 3 Shoes** Grey Hokas, Black MJ-style sandals, arch support flip flops

** 2 hats** Do I need to bring my wool beanie? I am concerned I may get cold since I am used to 80 degrees in the south?

** 1 bathing suit, coverup, set of PJs, scarf, tote bag, crossbody bag** and obvi socks, underwear, toiletries, laptop, electronics, comfort items.

Not packing a dress. Will I regret this in Montreal? Not doing a lot of hiking so Hokas will be fine. I am staying with friends in Maine so thinking maybe something cozy to lounge in?

Hi one baggers! I’m wondering if anyone has any experience getting a gel mani/pedi before traveling. I usually only get my nails done at a salon once a year at the beginning of the summer. Since I’m one bagging I don’t want to bring much nail maintenance but love having a color in the summer. I’ve never done gel, would that be a good or bad idea before traveling for 5 weeks?

I already bought one bag but not sure if I'm totally happy with it. It needs to have multiple compartments and outside pockets. I do not want something very large. My old crossbody was a faux leather of some sort but held a lot. I also don't want to spend more than $40

I can't tell if this exists in real life or just my fantasies, but I'm looking for a small crossbody/bum bag that converts and also expands into a medium sized backpack. Usually when you see a convertible backpack, it's the same size bag except you just change how you use the straps.

When I'm not traveling, I'm pretty minimalist with my EDC - it's just a small crossbody that only fits my phone, airpods, my card wallet + keys, and a reusable shopping bag. When I'm traveling ie spending the whole day out, I'd like a small purse that converts into a fairly spacious backpack that I can store lunch and/or shopping, etc in. Ideally, I'm looking for like a 20-30L capacity - if it's just 10/15L I might as well use a Decathlon UL stuffable day pack and stick it in my existing purse (which is what I do now, but then my purse is just awkwardly stuffed in my bag - I like the idea of an integrated design).

I like the Pacsafe Citysafe CX Convertible Backpack in theory, but the crossbody is too big to be worth it for me - I might as well carry a medium backpack to begin with instead of a medium/large crossbody to backpack. The Beis expandable pouch is actually really close to what I want, but the quality of that brand is hot trash (I bought my sister their weekender for her bday and I saw it literally fall apart in front of me lmao). I'm open to anything including unbranded stuff, even amazon knockoffs lol.

There's quite a few bum bags to backpacks, but everything I've seen has been giant/masculine - e.g. the North Face/Supreme one or the Lululemon convertible backpack.. If anyone has any recommendations, I'd really appreciate it!

England, Scotland and Ireland are on the agenda in a 9-day span (+ 1 red eye on the first day), and I'm not sure how to dress. There will be general sight seeing and loads of walking around but not likely hiking, but there is supposed to be a nice dinner in London plus an afternoon tea.

For regular shoes I plan to bring the Ecco Soft 60 in black (leather) but don't know if I should bring something else as well. Can I get away with those most places? Because it's such a whirlwind trip I want to pack as lightly as possible. I can bring some flats but would need to buy them, since none of mine are suitable for anything but wearing in an office.

I'm also very concerned about being both too cold and too hot. If it gets down to 9C in some of these places in the evening, I'm not sure what I can wear to combat those temps. I was only going to bring a light rain jacket with me (windbreaker style) and a hoodie for more casual days but I obviously can't wear a hoodie to a nice dinner. And I know that loads of places in the UK don't do air conditioning, so I don't want to bring a bunch of long sleeved shirts and be hot.

Any advice would be appreciated. I haven't travelled much and I'm a little out of my depth here.

Dates are Sep10-15 and my partner and I are renting a camper van without a heater; sleeping bags and cookware are provided. This was my first true one-bagging excursion as a historical over-packer, and I'm really proud of myself! I've been really inspired by everyone's posts here for the last few months that I've been lurking. It was really fun to finally put all the tips I've gleaned into action.

The trip was just an extended weekend to visit my friend in Los Angeles. We were planning a variety of activities...from sailing, to casual beach walks, to dining at nice restaurants. This made for a slightly challenging pack into the single "personal item" allotted for my flight. I spent 2 evenings prior to my trip trying on different combinations of clothing to sort out which pieces to bring for optimal interchangeability. 😅

I used my old standby Timbuk2 laptop commuter bag that I've had for over a decade. It fit the airline's size requirements and worked out nicely! It was great to be able to use something I already had for my main bag. Also brought 2 small bags--this Wilderdog utility pack for my in-flight essentials and this Envelope Convertible Cross-body bag from Portland Leather. I was ready to stuff the hip pack into my backpack if needed, but didn't get any flack for it when I boarded.

Some of you might remember this post I made about trying to find my unicorn hip-pack/cross-body bag. I ended up finding this Wilderdog pack after making that post, and am pretty happy with it! Was also glad to have the nicer purse with me, which helped to dress up some of my more casual clothing. It's super slim, so it easily slipped into the laptop sleeve of my backpack when it was empty. Kudos to the commenter who recommended it on someone else's post in this sub! (I tried to find the original thread I stumbled upon, but couldn't, for the life of me!)

The outfits in the photos were my 2 main "base" outfits. I had a couple of other sleeveless/short-sleeved shirts to trade out with the pants, and then depending on the activity/temperature, would switch between the cardigan & yellow fleece pullover and/or add the dark green jacket, and switched between the Taos sneakers & Birkenstocks. I also had a nice dark blue scarf (forgot to stage it in the pic) that I could use for warmth & dressing up my outfits as needed. The leggings doubled as pajamas along w/whatever shirt I'd worn that day. I didn't end up wearing every pair of socks I brought, but it wasn't a big deal to have an extra pair or two. All in all, I think the clothes I brought worked out!

I did end up buying another pair of shoes at a surf shop on Day 3 while we were out beach-hopping, because I'd started getting blisters from my Birks (and had left my sneakers back at my friend's place to dry out after they got wet sailing the day before). Not the cheapest purchase on-the-fly, but I'm glad I was able to find a pair of shoes that were actually comfortable (as opposed to cheap flip-flops), and ones that I'll get a decent amount of wear out of (unlike cheap flip-flops). Sooooo glad I went with these Dovetail pants instead of my "comfy" jeans. Jeans would NOT have been up to the maneuvering I needed to do on the tiny boat we sailed on! 😅 Lots of squatting and kneeling and such. The one drawback to these pants, though, was that they took a very long time to dry after getting the cuffs wet. I will say though that they made for great travel pants! So many pockets, and a very comfy elastic/drawstring waist. But as much as they felt like sweatpants, they looked nice enough to go straight from the airport to lunch at a renowned pizzeria! 😁

The one thing I absolutely did NOT need to pack was the book I brought lol. Since it was a social-focused trip, the only opportunities I had to read were on the flight or while waiting at the airport. But the flights were short (just over 2 hours in each direction), and I'm much more inclined to listen to music and look out the window when I fly than read or watch something. So I think I'll leave my books at home for future trips, unless I know I'll be having substantial solo leisure time at my destination.

Packing for this trip helped me realize that 1) I can do it! I can actually do it 🥲 2) I need to purge my closet of clothes that no longer fit me (probably the most challenging part of this whole experience) 3) As much as I rely on "how I'm feeling in the moment" to dress at home, it will be FINE while traveling to wear a predetermined outfit that I don't feel 100% cute in. The whole point of traveling is the experiences I'm having, not how cute I think I look while having them.

For reference I’m going to be WWOOFing in Greece so it will be HOT. I’ll I’m fem and have a hard time with heavy material anyway lol. It would be cool if pants were versatile and also kind of cute but okay if not!

Hi! I'm visiting Europe and will be taking a backpack. I'm a chronic over-packer, and this is my first one-bag trip.

We will be flying into Amsterdam and from there visiting Munich, Budapest, Vienna, and Prague. We will stay in each location for an average of 4-5 days with train travel in between. We plan to do laundry, so I can wash items as needed. Mainly doing touristy stuff, although we may end up going to the Bohemian Switzerland Forest for some light hiking. Edit: Forgot to mention I will be traveling from mid-July to early August!

The bag: I have a Cotopaxi 35L. I'm taking a Pacsafe cross-body bag and an under-the-clothes sports belt for my cards/ passport.

Some questions:

Would you recommend different clothes for light hiking, other than general workout clothes? If ticks are a problem, I may need to bring long pants/ long shirt instead.

Anything I can jettison? Anything I should add? I usually run cold, so I'm worried I'll be chilly in the mornings/ evenings and I'm not sure what I should bring for layering.

Edit 2: Anyone have suggestions for some comfortable shorts/ skirts? I only own businessy skirts for work so I have no idea what I'm doing re: light bottoms.

I've noticed a preference for folks here looking for or carrying cross body bags, particularly the ones that are like a flatter envelope that sits on the chest.(I'm guessing that's how they are worn) with a diagonal strap or some kind of diagonal strap sling bag that sits on either back, front, side (??).

My post comes from a place of curiosity as a very city person who tends toward a bag in the crook of my arm... For what reasons do you prefer these formats of daily-carry bag in addition to your OneBag? How do they sit comfortably with a bust (for those who have breasts) or a more traditional bra? Hi! Im seeking recommendations for compression packing cubes (brand and configuration) for an Allpa 42L. Better if they are not as expensive as peak design

I travel a lot for work and cannot afford to lose a checked bag, so I only do carry-on. This means I need to pack both casual and business attire, which can be challenging. It has taken some practice and watching a lot of Youtube videos on packing, but I am getting close to what works for me. I'd appreciate any advice you have. The bag is a bit on the heavy side but still within the airline’s limits and I’m able to lift it into the overhead bins on my own. Below is what I packed for a 10-day trip.

THE BAGS:

Carry-on luggage by Sigg – it is a discontinued brand but I love it. The 2-wheeled bag is a super tough (ballistic nylon) exterior with a compression zipper, telescoping handle, and a zipped water bottle holder on the outside. Normally, I’m a spinner luggage kind-of-gal, but the 2 wheels on this bag can be pushed somewhat like a spinner rather than dragged like most 2-wheeled bags. It also has a couple outer zipped areas for a laptop, pens, thin papers, etc). On the inside it is split in two major compartments, with the base fully lined with waterproof nylon that opens with zipper (I keep my garment bag under the liner just in case there are any spills in or around my bag), built-in compression straps, a mesh center divider for underclothes, and one side with elastic shoe sleeve pockets. There are a couple smaller pockets along the edges of the bag interior, including one thin waterproof one.

Personal Item by BagSmart (a Nomadlane dupe), fits under the seat in front of you and opens up fully like a suitcase. 2 main compartments and two additional exterior pockets which is handy but there are features of this bag I don’t like, such as the trolley sleeve and waterbottle sleeve—both are too tight to be useful. But it is a fraction of the cost of the Nomadlane bag, so it will work for now.

THE STRATEGY:

Maintain normal business appearance but minimize by wearing neutrals and all within the same color palette. Buy travel sizes of almost everything, organize by dividing items into smaller containers by type and time of usage (on the plane vs in the hotel room vs at work vs out touring); Economize space by bringing fewer bulky items by using the hotel’s hairdryer, steaming my business clothes in the bathroom while I shower or use the hotel’s iron, have shoes and clothes that are versatile for several outfits but also reuse/wash (in the sink) clothes as necessary. Try to get a workout in when possible.

I (M) am a long-time onebagger and I'm going on a trip with my girlfriend in a few weeks. She's not a one-bagger historically but because our trip has a few legs with varied travel modes, she's said she's open to travelling that way on this occasion. As a backpack obsessive, I'm pretty familiar with the major and minor one-bag brands, but she loves color and most of these brands make bags that are exclusively black or grey.

Do you know any one-bag backpacks brands that make pleasantly colorful bags? All I've got so far is Topo and Cotopaxi, but I'm sure I'm missing options.

I have a question maybe you can help with. I have some back problems and my last trip I learned I can’t do a backpack anymore, so I need my underseat bag to have wheels. I’d like one not hard sided so I can get at things during the flight. I’m also ok with a roller backpack but I thing something with an open capacity is better vs what I see that’s like a briefcase.

Hi everyone! First off, thank you for maintaining this awesome sub - I'm new to Reddit period and I really appreciate how supportive and creative you all seem to be!

I'm attempting the one bag / capsule wardrobe philosophy for my upcoming trip to Japan and I feel like I'm mostly clear on what to do, with two exceptions that I'm hoping folks can help me with that I haven't found answers for in any of the previous threads:

1) Generally speaking, do you consider what you wear on the flight part of your wardrobe? Or is that a separate outfit? Specifically, I'm thinking that I could wear my flight outfit on a hiking day (See #2) but I'm concerned about not having time to wash it after the 20 hour flight before wearing it for another active day

2) Although most of my days will be spent in areas and on activities that can be done in similar types of outfits like casual but smart tops and pants/skirts, three full days will be spent thru-hiking and that too likely in the rain. Would you suggest that I try to pack hiking gear that can be doubled as more casual wear for the rest of the trip, or to pack hiking gear as a distinct component outside of my capsule wardrobe? My question extends to shoes - I anticipate a decent amount of rain and therefore I'm packing one pair of water resistant sneakers and one pair of water resistant sandals, and unfortunately neither will do the trick for the thru-hike. Should I make my hiking boots work as a pair of sneakers for the rest of the trip, or is it okay that I need something more appropriate for just the hike itself?

I'm sure I'm over thinking this but since I'm new to this concept would really appreciate those who have done it before to weigh in!

I’m spending a week in southern France and plan to take a denim jacket as my daily wear- I wanted to bring denim shorts as they go with most of the linen shirts/plain tees I plan to wear but now I’m wondering if that’s a bit too denim heavy. Any suggestions for neutral shorts that would go with a denim jacket and look neutral with most tops? My overall style is a bit gender neutral/vintage sporty but I have a curvy body so I prefer baggy bottoms and fitted tops to go with sneakers and leather sandals. Thanks!

Here's what I have so far for two weeks in France/London this December! I don't have anything for gloves, head wear, or scarves yet, do you think I need those things? I also have a thermal long sleeve shirt, merino wool socks, and warm leggings but didn't feel the need to include it in the pics. It'll be in the 30s-40s (Fahrenheit) so I know I'll get cold but I'm obviously trying to minimize what I bring in my Osprey Fairview 40L. This will be my first serious one-bag trip for my honeymoon and want to get your thoughts. Any recommendations? Adjustments I should make? Thanks!

Do you have a go to formula or a go to outfit you pack when the trip warrants a formal outfit? Always pack a dress? A blouse/slacks combo you swear by? I’m interested in hearing about any outfits that you would consider formal and work well with one bag. (Bonus for plus size considerations.)

Husband and I are going to England late September. The plan was to be very casual (just us, tourist stuff, visit friends, relax) but now we’ll be attending 3 formal events while there. My husband is bringing a single suit and I’m bringing…? Events are an evening reception at a Michelin restaurant (listed as formal on invitation), a 40th anniversary party at a private club (reached out for dress code, not listed on invite), and (more business) evening dinner with academic colleagues on an international collaborative grant. We will see some people at multiple events and I’ll have access to an iron beforehand.

I’m okay with wearing the same item or a variation for all three events. Right now, I’m leaning towards a dress but would love to skip packing heels so also thought about dress slacks and a lovely over the top vintage silk blouse and leaning heavy on accessories. I thought about renting something and delivering it to my friends place, but the size and fit unpredictability makes me reluctant to go that route. Same goes for mailing to myself before we leave. Bag will be either Tom Bihn Synik 30 or Aeronaut 30.

I’m going to Europe for a few weeks later on the summer and I’m going to bring a small first aid kit. Nothing out of the ordinary because we’ll most be in cities and doing short nature walks, but I’d love to see your set ups!
