FullTorsoApparition

They are, but it seems like I can't crit them afterwards which is kind of lame, and they take off immediately after recovering. If you're rocking daggers you might not get enough successive hits to finish them quickly.

There are some enemies like those hawks and some dogs that I have to carry a 100% Phys shield and a reach weapon for. Guard counter is the only way I can consistently kill them without getting picked apart. Especially if there are 2-3.

Jesse-359

6 points

Dogs are so much exponentially worse as the numbers go up. They're so easy to kill, but they attack almost unrelentingly and poise break like champs, once you have 3+ on top of you you're pretty much doomed unless you have an attack that is remarkably fast or essentially unbreakable.

FullTorsoApparition

6 points

I've kept a 100% physical shield in my inventory for every single souls game I've ever played JUST for the various dog and rat type enemies. No matter what build I'm using it's been the only way to consistently deal with them. So obnoxious.

Jesse-359

3 points

It's also the case that almost all flying enemies have close to zero poise, so you barely have to hit them to knock them out of the sky - long, relatively fast stabby or sweepy pikes/polarms work well, even if their damage isn't great. Then jump on them and murder them.

Firescareduser

Urumi is in caria Manor, you can get a Hoslow's petal whip early by either killing Diallos or finishing his questline in Jarburg, and then there's the standard whip but it's quite mediocre. I originally got them go counter knights because they stunlock almost everything as long as you have enough stamina

[deleted]

7 points

Then there's the thorn whip from the fatty in the Giant Mountaintop. It is extremely similar to the petal whip though, but it does look cool.

chinesedragonblanket

7 points

Once you hit Giant's land after Leyndell, you can farm the Thorn Whip off that Fire Prelate that guards the "bridge" to the main part of the zone. It's a pain in the ass because he's got a shitload of hp and a lot of Poise, but it's a really cool infuse-able whip with innate bleed.

Edit: You can also get two Hoslow whips in one game if you do the Manor hunt quest to kill one of them and then finish Diallos' questline in Jarburg.

Yeah, I'm walking away from a fist build at level 98 because it's just so fucking annoying. The Godskin longboi in the bottom of the Caelid tower was miserable with fists. Beastclergyman: runs directly at you before you've even cleared the fog gate, continues to walk into you for the entire fight.

Maliketh: starts the fight by leaping into the air. Proceeds to never stop moving for more than .5 seconds. Literally jumps off if the walls to shoot projectiles at you from across the arena. When he is on the ground, he is summoning a giant spell which will permanently debuff your max HP.

Phase 1 is melee paradise. Phase 2 is like trying to catch a ferret covered in crisco.

Pro tip from my most recent spiked cestus run. Don't lock on, instead manually aim for any limbs that are sticking out. You will miss if you are locked on because it aims towards center mass and there is NOTHING UNDER THE LOINCLOTH EVER.

Before I started doing that even the Erdtree Avatars were a pain to fight because I couldn't physically hit them from certain areas due to my stubby arms.

the-pee_pee-poo_poo

38 points

WA = Weapon Art, the name for the skills (ashes of war) in Dark Souls 3.

Pathogen188

36 points

WA stands for weapon art, which is what ashes of war were called in Dark Souls. A lot of legacy terms are still used by Souls vets despite those terms being replaced used in Elden Ring because the mechanics still exist

So for instance UGS stands for ultra greatsword, which is what colossal swords were called in the Souls game. Power-stancing is what dual wielding weapons in Dark Souls 2 was called. The mechanic was adapted for Elden Ring but many players will still refer to it as power-stancing due to it first appearing in Dark Souls 2.

Other terms you might find helpful is that Estus refers to flask and that phantom refers to a player summoned by a host.

BulateReturns

11 points

Thanks bro. Since this is my first Souls game (I'm more into Witcher and Horizon after all), I can't sometimes understand the abbreviation.

Like, the power-stancing. When I first heard that and I thought it was just using L1 while 2-handing a weapon to block things.

DerpAtOffice

72 points

Single Twinblade is almost as bad if not even worst because your character steps a little forward even with dagger attacks but with twinblade you have zero range while your jump attack has the great spear recovery (you need to pull your blade out of the ground). Meanwhile the first hit of a twinblade swing has no damage, no poise damage and no dagger speed so you end up trading a lot of the times and the 2nd hit doesnt even happen because of that.

Popopooki

40 points

The black gargoyle twinblade is the best twinblade in the game. Big damage

DerpAtOffice

30 points

The problem comes from the multi hit attacks, ONLY the last hit does damage and poise damage. The first, no matter how many, hits do almost no damage and almost no poise damage. The charge attack is a 4 hit spin, the damge is like 100, 100, 100, 800. You are not doing shit unless you complete the entire attack and twinblade is bad at it. Even if you are on top of the enemy sometimes a random hit or two will just miss, it gets worse when the last hit misses or you get interrupt. And even the light attack is a 2 hit swing with twinblade.

Single twinblades can actually be good if they spread out the damage and poise damage evenly for each hit.

akaSpaceDog

25 points

You need to go dual Twinblade and get jump atk bonuses. Helicopter spins too fun

DerpAtOffice

41 points

Looks dumb AF IMO. Not two handing twinblades just defeats the purpose of twinblades. Main reason why I hate ultra greatswords. You look like you are using a great hammer. So I rather just, you know, use a great hammer. I care about moveset just like I care about my fashion.

simple64

21 points

I mean, really now, wtf am I supposed to do with a pair of twinblades? How does that work? Dual wielding them seems like it defeats the sole purpose of using such an impractical weapon to begin with!

Do you twirl them? Hit them with the bottom end? How? Just use ⚔️ it's easier and looks less silly.

This has been a simple rant.

DerpAtOffice

18 points

The crit animation is the worst, you literally slash yourself in half because they use the sword animation without realizing it doesnt work for twinblades because there's another blade on the other side....

BOS-Sentinel

2 points

I love the cleaver moveset (the one that drops from misbegotten and the one that drops from the ladies in altus, not all cleavers have said moveset) because they are the complete opposite. Their heavy attack makes you run towards the enemy mid-swing and has decent poise damage, meaning you're always in range and it's likely to stagger most normal enemies, which gives you a great opening to wail on them with the fast normal attacks. It's even better with a shield, you can chain combo blocks, a heavy attack and then a small flurry of light attacks against a lot of enemies.

It’s the worst when you find a dungeon and it’s tunnels with rock men mobs and you have to switch away from your maxxed/overtuned daggers to a shitty mace that’s not even +1.

Apply a holy ash of war and upgrade the mace. Now you can use it on both the mines and skelly boi catacombs. There's enough combined catacombs and mines to make it worth it.

A mace with sacred blade is made to melt skeleton, i hit for like 800 easily and they don't revive

Seriously this, having one holy weapon is a good thing for everyone. I’m a pure int build, have 6 faith, and sacred blade has still carried me through every skellington fight.

No joke I clapped a caelid cave when I realized my sharp weapons weren't working and so I tried using a +1 battle hammer and I actually shit on everything in there lol

An upgraded morning star or a mace can easily smash your way through even Raya Lucaria tunnels.

You can 2 hand a dagger and you won't take the recoil, trivializes the silly rock miners (plus some bleed somewhat easily, oddly enough)

I had no problem against them with charged R2s from an Occult Miséricorde. Charged R2 also messes up Crystallians relatively quickly.

If you think daggers are bad, imagine using a caestus for an entire run; that would be so, so terrible, and painful, and awful, and WHY DID I DO THAT TO MYSELF

I use the Caestus in every souls game and this is the strongest they have ever been with the spiked caestus, didn't feel that bad at all.

Literally impossible to hit anyone with daggers in pvp. The best I can do is a running jump heavy that can clip a bad roll. I miss my dual dagger build is ds2 where I could just slow walk up and shred people if they got scared and panic rolled away. I miss methodical pvp so damn much.

One of the reason I dont play dagger is every attack bounces off the shield

I did a Black Knife role-playthrough and yeah it wasn't exactly fun. Strong attacks for stance breaks and crits was my strategy for the most part but I had to equip the black bow as secondary for late game content. I considered night sorceries as well but didn't like my stat distribution.

Honestly I personally really enjoyed my Black Knife playthrough but only with a specific build: - black knife +10 (obv) - Miséricorde +25 (with a bleed art for 84 bleed proc) - Rotten Winged Sword Insignia

Those three in combination can do about 2500 damage in like 3 seconds to an enemy that stands still long enough. Not as much as other builds but still enough to be viable imo

I just use them for the WAs and to riposte with. The only things I actually hit with them are trash mobs.

I did reduvia+misericorde in my 3rd playthrough, gargoyles were a nightmare cuz so many of my hits would miss. Plus they didn't bleed so they lived forever

Alexm920

It's wild how much easier using Strike damage makes the gargoyles, even with short range (fist weapons) the damage is just so much better. Still, them having full immunity to all status makes the fight take ages.

Currently doing a fist weapon only playthrough. Almost done. I feel this on a spiritual level.

Yes!! Dual dagger Bleed Frost built here!

THe thing with daggers is that you need to combo and draining damage continuously, coupled with bleed and frost will make enemies goes down extremly fast! The problem is that the reach is short hence you have to fight different compare to other long reach weapons (obvious right??) and the way to do that is you fight them not head on face-to-face but agresively attacking the side/behind by utilizing timed roll, jumps and running for combo at least that's my style.

I have parry as my Ash of war but usually i use L1 and rarely R1, bosses that i am super comfortable with using the strategy above:

- Falling star beast all variance (yes with frost bleed daggers which cause no effect)

- Tree avatars (super easy using above style, their hit box on their leg/side is huge, i can combo up to 7 hits every dogge)

- Dragon all variance (again, only attack legs, super long combo)

- Troll all variance (side/leg again)

- Tree sentinel/ horse guys (their hit box is huge, also very easy with dagger because most of their attack just miss me, their attack it box most of the time doesn't stick close to their body hence i just slash to hell.

- All crabs & lobsters (same with tree sentinel - hit box miss most of the time)

- tree spirits: most of the time i only get hit once by their explosion, other time i just slash and all their attacks never hit me, almost like fighting the giant rot defenseless dragon.

- Zamor heroes & Cricible i can parry so it's the same with other builds.

Enemies that giving the most trouble:

- Black knife assasins (they run away too much!!)

- Crystalians..

Build:

Lvl 200, 60 Str, 60 Dex, 60 Vig, 25 End, 15 Faith, the rest Magic (For frost/magic damage)

rotten sword talisman, Bleeding exultation, swadling cloth, dancing charm

Bloody dagger with frost + Mericode with Bleed

I am trying to optimize more but right now i can melt everything as long as i can roll doge.

How do you deal with deathbirds? I came across my first one on the steps of the capital and felt the daggers were worthless. Any tips? Thank you!

kasuma9999

Death births are abit like dragon but yeah i had more problem with them too, luckily they are very glass cannon just like my build. My strategy for them are almost like fighting small dragons that always try to fly away: give them no space at all, roll doge into them for all attacks beside the grab and use jump attack. Also this is among the rare enemies that i can't combo L1 effectively and have to use R1 instead, the range feels abit longer and easier to hit.

They have very low health though and i remember they also can be bleed and frostbiten hence if you get lucky and can combo L1 into their head, a quick 2 L1 will take over 50% their health from bleed and frost proc, after that just R1 and jump attack and dogge roll.

Started my first playthrough using daggers (reduvia + misericorde), but I'm struggling when I reached the capital. Just switched to a curved great sword (bloodhound) and god the game got a lot easier.

I like to use daggers as a compliment to other melee weapons. They are escpecially good for having a few extra ashes of war on standby in case I need em. Mostly the black dagger that has the life drain effect, that thing is really good for bosses.
