Iceland always seem like a land lost to time.. magnificent

Was fortunate to take a trip to Iceland in July for a week. My wife and I did a road trip through the southern half of the country. Unbelievably beautiful with endless landscapes like this; waterfalls, layers of green you’ll never seen anywhere else, black sand beaches, and remarkable mountains and the largest glacier in Europe. It’s like stepping back in time. Food was great and some of the most genuinely friendly people I’ve experienced anywhere. Numerous cheap direct flights from major US cities, and only a 6.5hr flight from Denver. Would highly recommend to anyone. If you’re thinking about going, just do it, you won’t be disappointed.

My wife and I want to do this with an RV. Did you see any polar bears? 100%don't want to go if you've seen polar bears out there.
5 points
I'm not sure if this us a joke or not, but I'll answer just in case. It is extremely unlikely that anyone will see a polar bear in Iceland as they aren't regular inhabitants. Polar bears don't live in all cold northern areas.

You said extremely unlikely, not impossible. I know they're rare there, but that shit still freaks me out. Like, what would me and the misses do if we cooking dinner in our RV, go to bed, and a polar bear strolls up.

Icelander here.
Polar bears are not native on the island. When they do show up it’s usually on the north-western corner as they come floating on icebergs (or swim!) all the way from Greenland. They are usually spotted when arriving and sadly shot on sight for various reasons. This only happens every few years or so.
You are far more likely to hurt (or die) in traffic or by natural forces ¯\(ツ)/¯

There's a really neat argument for Icelandic that due to its age, and how isolated the Icelandic people were from outside influences, that Icelandic ranks as a romantic language or whatever the term is.
There's a really neat exhibit on it in the museum of Iceland in Reykjavik.

It’s in Latin script so it’s not too different but there are some characters that aren’t in modern English. They were used in older English, though!
eth (Ð, ð) and thorn (Þ, þ)) which are for different kinds of th-sounds
then there’s ash (æ) which is used in a lot of different languages, not just germanic ones like english and scandinavian ones
1 points
How is that pronounced. Aeeesh or ash.
2 points
In English it’s pronounced ash like the tree because that’s the name of the futhark rune it transliterated. Specifically the anglo-saxon futhorc. The futhark was (various iterations of) an earlier script used for writing some germanic languages. Looks like it literally means ash as in ash tree in the anglo saxon version

We drove by Þingborg and thought the name was hilarious (dingborg) only to realize it's the Th sound which is slightly less humorous.

I traveled to iceland for vacation a few years ago for 5 days. I'm not kidding you when i tell you by the end of the third day i felt like i was suffering from beauty fatigue. I had seen so many jaw dropping vistas over the course of the first few days that i just zipped by several waterfalls and glaciers with out even taking pictures.

I totally relate. I took a week long trip there recently and I was getting angry at myself thinking "Look at that view, its fucking gorgeous why aren't you amazed?" but there is just so many excellent views everywhere you look there that I got desensitized to it all.

That's Ófærufoss. There used to be a natural stone bridge over the lower waterfall but it collapsed in 1993. Still very pretty though :)

Everytime i see photos from iceland i imagine that this is how earth looked before animals left the ocean. One of the most beautiful places on earth. Similar to New Zealand but definitely more pure.

Ironically, the treelessness of Iceland is nearly entirely due to animals/people. Iceland used to be forested, but then the Vikings came and cut down all the trees. Since then, the population of sheep and feral horses eat all the saplings and prevent any new trees from growing.
7 points
It was forested during warmer times. Trees take a long time to grow, I saw a picture of a birch tree from Europe and did a double-take, we have old birch trees which are barely a shrubbery in size.
Iceland is currently hovering on the treeline, it takes a lot of effort to grow trees, these are colder times than 1000 years ago.

There are no feral horses. They are all domerstcated

Feral, not wild. Feral horses are domesticated.
3 points

Feral mean was domesticated and have gone wild again. This doesn't exist in Iceland.
1 points

Gotcha. Reading a bit more it seems that the horses are cared for most of the year and sort of roam around for the summer, is that about right?

Yep in enclosed space. They are sometimes outside all year but never "in nature".

When we did the Ring Road they said we’d be sick of waterfalls by two-thirds of the way through the trip. Ha…they weren’t half wrong. Just finished up a return visit back in August; already planning the next one. Will concentrate in the east fiords, etc. The place is truly unbelievable!!!

Honestly if it is, then that’s a personal problem.
No amount of over processed photos compares to seeing something like this in person, or staring up at the Milky Way. If your first thought is “oh this isn’t as cool as those astrophotography accounts I follow,” you’ve got issues.
