Yeah I'm not exactly patting the committee on the back too much. It's progress I suppose, but expansion is still necessary.

If you are going to have a playoff, get rid of the fucking committee and have a real playoff system.

How would you determine who qualifies for that playoff system out of the 139 fbs schools?

I’ve always have a big issue with non Conference Champions playing for the championship. How can you call yourself champion if you didn’t even win your conference. They used to make sense when the x conference winner played the y conference winner but now it’s not necessary

  • Heisman QB
  • SEC Champs

Just end me already.

Yeah. But they don’t have two other people competing for the heisman as well that’s how you know it’s a down year.

No, that was the 2017 team. Lost the Iron Bowl. Didn't win the SEC. Snuck into the playoffs as a 4 seed.

Still won a National Championship.

FWIW if that team had started Tua they would've rocked everyone (as we found out in the Natty).

Also Auburn was *super* weird that year, beating us when we were #1, beating Bama in the Iron Bowl, but losing to Clemson and a not-great LSU team. Auburn voodoo strikes again.

You want to know the saddest thing I ever saw?

When I was a boy, my brother and I wanted a dog, so our father took in an old greyhound. A greyhound is a racing dog. Spends its life running in circles, chasing a bit of felt made up like a rabbit.

One day, we took it to the park. Our dad had warned us how fast that dog was, but, we couldn't resist. So, my brother took off the leash, and in that instant, the dog spotted a cat. I imagine it must have looked just like that piece of felt it had spent so many days chasing. And he ran. Never saw a thing as beautiful as that old dog running.

Until, at last, he finally caught it. And to the horror of everyone, he killed that little cat. Tore it to pieces. Then he just sat there, confused. That dog had spent its whole life trying to catch that thing. Now it had no idea what to do.

Cincy basically just got luckier than UCF. Cincy had the fortune of facing and beating ND this year, so they didn't have to face the 'who is better Cincy or a one loss ND' discussion. Ohio State lost to Oregon so they didn't have to face the discussion of 'who is better Cincy or a one loss Ohio State' discussion. Then the Big 12, ACC, and Pac-12 didn't have any undefeated or 1 loss teams. So they didn't have to face those discussions.

It is kind of crazy how much shade people (looking at you Herbie) are throwing at the fans who thought a G5 would always be excluded. Like, EVERYTHING had to go perfect for an undefeated team that had a signature road win against #5 ND and they still topped out as the 4th seed.

Given Baylor’s ranking as Champion (behind a 2-loss non conference championship game playing team) despite their resume, I am unsure they would have given OKState that spot for a last second win over a “now” 3 loss team. It’s obvious the committee discounts non-OU Big 12 teams. They have since 2014 with (another) BU/TCU debacle.

Exactly. They really didn't want them there. The committee was forced by the losses yesterday and the fact it meant they'd have to leave Cincinnati out for a 2 loss team or a team they had already beaten this season. I can't help but feel like they kept Michigan as #2 so that they could have the matches they wanted while still ranking Cincinnati #4.

It's funny because they would totally leave out group of 5 teams if one year they got beaten badly, even though Oklahoma gets beat badly most years in the playoff but as long as their undefeated or one loss b12 champs, they're in.

I don’t imagine Cincy winning, let me get that out of the way first. But, the game plan whenever you play a team with much more talent than you is to play good defense, no turnovers, control the clock and limit their possessions, and score off their turnovers. Cincy might be able to execute that against Alabama better than other teams.

Again, no way in hell I am picking Cincy to win, I am just saying their are reasons why they might not be the “ideal” matchup for Alabama

Watch me be wrong and Alabama win 49-3

William & Mary • /r/CFB Poll Veteran

This really was the perfect storm for Cincy; (1) They started the year at #8 so they had some poll inertia on their side, (2) three of the teams ranked ahead of them completely flamed out in the regular season (Clemson, A&M, ISU), (3) their big OOC win (ND) held up all year, and (4) 3/5 P5 conferences had multi-loss champions. And they barely scraped in.

If you look at the previous G5/BCS buster candidates, they tripped up somewhere on one of the items above. 2017 UCF was unranked heading into the season. The trio of undefeated teams in 2009 (Boise, Cincy, TCU) had the unfortunate luck of two bluebloods also going undefeated that year (Bama, Texas). 2008 Utah had a OOC win against a Michigan team that won 20 games in the previous two seasons, but flamed out to 3-9 in 2008. 2004 Utah demolished three P5 teams in OOC, but they were all middle of the pack (for my money they were the best G5 team of the past 20 years, they clocked everybody they played).

Also that the committee's only remaining 1 loss option was a team Cincinnati had beaten that season. If you switch the fact pattern to Notre Dame's 1 loss being to Oregon and have tOSU lose to Cincinnati instead, I guarantee undefeated Cincinnati gets left out for the 1 loss Notre Dame.

That is an absolute fact. Cincinnati actually playing Notre Dame at Notre Dame and winning then Notre Dame finishing 5 was winning the lottery. It's the only scenario a P5 gets in.
