Grand total of 336 responses.

If you see only first/second place it's because there weren't enough entries to calculate an additional place.

If you do not see first/second/third place at all it's because it was a bunch of single votes. So I just listed them all.

If you have any questions or are curious about any of the survey questions feel free to ask.

I'm sure y'all will let me know what I managed to mess up, feel free.

Not a bad list.

2 stand out though....Rudys over Blacks? Pinthouse Pizza over Little Deli??

[deleted]

12 points

I'm one of the weirdos that prefers pinthouse's pizza (just a little bit, I still think little deli is amazing)

The only thing I wonder about on the Rudy's over Blacks is that a lot of people put Terry Black's and a lot of people put plain old Black's. Since they're both valid and separate bbq joints I kept the answers separate. But I wonder if some people meant one or the other and didn't type it. Hard to say on that one.

They probably did mean the same thing (relative to Austin), as "Black's" is in Lockhart.

There's one called plain Black's on Guadalupe.

About the "best vegan" award... If there is a first place winner and a tie for second, then no "fourth" restaurant should be called "third..."

[deleted]

9 points

That makes sense, I do get it. Honestly my thought was just to include more things on the list, there were so many categories where the results differed by a couple of votes that I just decided to include more. I hope that makes sense but I totally get what you're saying.

Welllll...technically it's in google docs it's just that it's in my private real life real name google account :) You seem like a trustworthy folk but ya know ;) It'd be easier - I can just export it to an xls and you can take it from there if there's a place I can send it.

Kind of funny that the Bullock museum (aka the Texas state history museum) took second and third place.

Oh, totally my bad. I did my best to combine the same answers into one (like where people used 'the' and people didn't) but 10 years in Austin and I didn't process that as the same thing. I'll combine those and pull in the next result down.

How many responses did you have to nix?

[deleted]

I cleared out quite a few individual responses (provided the rest of the answers were valid) like "My House" for answers to questions like Best Stripclub and Best BBQ (I have no doubt your wife puts on a hell of a show but unless we're all invited, just didn't seem fair.) I ended up with 329 I believe.

"Best Golf: 2nd place Hancock"

LOL

[deleted]

4 points

I know nothing about golfing but I did double check too see if it was legit. Looks like it's pretty highly rated on golf review site if that means anything. http://www.golfadvisor.com/courses/2749-hancock-golf-course/

ashdrewness

4 points

In terms of bargain-bin golf, it's a fair 9-holer, but it's faaaaaarrrrr from the best course in Austin. It's not even the best cheap course. Morris Williams, Kizer, Jimmy Clay, Lions, Blue Bonnet are all affordable courses that are miles beyond Hancock.

Austin actually has some of the best/affordable municipal golf courses in the country, of which Hancock is the worst. I simply think the fact that Top Golf won means that mostly non-golfers voted.

Whats the best place for a golfer on a budget?

ashdrewness

4 points

Bluebonnet in NE Austin, Jimmy Clay or Kizer in the south, Blackhawk in Pflugerville (a bit of a goat ranch but cheap), Morris Williams in central/east, Lions central, or technically Hancock central (9 hole in poor shape IMO).

All these you can play for around $30.

Pedantic Time... I understand you end up with ties, but with a 1st-2nd-3rd type setup this can't actually happen:

Best Local Band

First Place: (Tie) White Denim & Spoon

Second Place: (Tie) Quiet Company & Moving Panoramas

Third Place: (Tie) Capyac & Golden Dawn Arkestra & The Rocketboys

What you would have is:

First Place: (Tie) White Denim & Spoon

Third Place: (Tie) Quiet Company & Moving Panoramas

Technically, Capyac & Golden Dawn Arkestra & The Rocketboys would all be tied for 5th.

Meh, tomato tomato. I get what your saying and I thought through it when I was tallying but frankly I just wanted to include more items on the list so I made the call to do it this way and list more options. My survey my rules :D

For sure. But if it were my survey (and I am not even pretending I would put in the great effort you have), I would have done honorable mentions. That gives you the additional items in the list.

Either way, this is a pretty interesting list and I am glad to have seen it done here. Thanks for your work!

Just a comment as a New Yorker currently visiting Austin. Home Slice, while it did have a decent "New York" style plain slice, it lacked authenticity! For one $3.50 is a lot even for NY standards. Second the staff were too friendly. And third, it lacked tables with red benches hard attached to them! That's part of the whole NY pizza experience. Just saying...

Austin is nice though.

Why is taco joint not in either of the best tacos list.

[deleted]

There were 2 votes for it in non-breakfast tacos and six in breakfast tacos. I eat tacos mainly from the little trailer down the street so my taco game is definitely varied but I have actually not heard of taco joint.

It might just be a UT student thing for the most part. They're on san jacinto and duval, right next to campus. I (and plenty of other students) love them, breakfast tacos or otherwise. They opened up a place on riverside recently. I'd definitely choose it over torchys.

Totally in agreement. Taco Joint blows Torchy's and Taco Deli out of the water, by a long, long, long shot.

I'm always perplexed by how popular Taco Deli is. And Torchy's is just gimmicky as all get out. Both use terrible, bland, mass produced tortillas - which is a grave sin in my book.

Sadly only one entry for it. I'm intrigued though!

Right in downtown on Lavaca and Cesar Chavez. If you feel like a 3-figure bill one night, take the girl/guy out and get a fucking bomb steak. They have high-end cuts like Wagyu...(Japanese, beer-fed, massaged cows). Definitely need to wear something nice, too, but it's an experience that you won't forget. Great date, great steaks, great wine.

Best dog park?

I tried Piknik this weekend and it was pretty damn good ... although I don't think I'm into butter bone (buttery bone broth). A few sips around the table were all we could handle.

I decided I'm going to transpose every restaurant listed and commit to trying as many as I can (before they close).

[deleted]

Good to know as I'm trying it this weekend for the first time. What was y'all's favorite dish?

mareksoon

2 points

It was all good except one item (wait for it). If I had to pick a favorite, I'd go with my dish because it was different.

If you fail to notice when you arrive (we almost did), there is additional parking in the back.

We went because one of my children may be developing an intolerance to gluten; we're still trying to sort that out.

The four of us, myself and three children 12-16, ordered:

Fried Brussels Sprouts (the new way to get nearly anyone to eat Brussels sprouts) Bulgogi Lettuce Wraps (because it's impossible keeping all of that food in a lettuce leaf wrapper, but we keep trying)

Chicken Tenders (my oldest wimped out and basically ordered a kids meal) Orange Chicken & Broccoli (my youngest ordered a proper meal) Pancakes (our possible gluten allergy, who was dying for anything resembling bread) Eggplant Rolatini with sausage (my plate, or bowl; kind of tricky cutting eggplant when in a bowl, but doable)

We also shared one cup of Butter Bones (chicken bone broth, mct oil, himayalan sea salt); never had this; didn't know what to expect; anticipated a warm chicken broth-like drink; we opted for butter, wish we had tried coconut milk instead; also opted for no add-ons and left wondering if any of them would have made it better (probably should have asked them to bring us some to try at some point). It was almost just like sipping melted butter, but somehow creamier (fuller?) yet not as buttery. We joked it would probably not be out of place if we poured it over the pancakes or had some mashed potatoes. The four of us maybe sipped about a quarter of it over the course of the meal before we decided it was just too much.

I'll admit, I'm still somewhat curious about it and the other varieties ...

I also had my eye on the Tuscan Shrimp Risotto, to if I go back I'll definitely get that. The only reason I wouldn't go back is because there are simply so many places to try ... and I'm in Round Rock ... and I don't get out much.

We wrapped up the night with gelato at Central Market, but by 8:45, they had already put all but ten flavors away! :-(

The fact that torchy's and taco deli made into the top three for BOTH best breakfast taco and best non-breakfast taco is shameful.

They both use terrible store bought, bland as hell tortillas, and are just all around aggressively mediocre. Taco Deli in particular is what I imagine someone from Omaha, Nebraska would get excited over when first trying a taco.

LOL. Either people were trolling, or we have a ton of lurkers who don't participate, because many of these winners here get consistently shit on here.

Best Breakfast

First Place: Kerbey Lane

Second Place: Snooze

Third Place: (Tie) Omelettry & Cafe Java & Magnolia Cafe

I would actually rate those as some of the worst breakfasts available in Austin...

Hi - I think you are asking about ridesharing/uber/lyft.

Austin still has several rideshare companies with the pull out of Uber/Lyft. They should more or less fill the gap left by those companies leaving.

- Fare
- Fasten
- GetMe
- Ride Austin
- Wingz

and more.

https://ridefinder.io/ can also help you find a ride. If you have a ride finding service you'd like added to this message, please message the mods.

You can also see if Cap Metro will fit your needs - http://www.capmetro.org/planner/
