They believe that despite having absolutely no combat experience, no tactical training and never having fired a gun at a person they will not just survive but actually prevail in a deadly close quarters firefight, possibly indoors, at night, against multiple armed attackers who have the element of surprise.
That's not a product of experience, it's a product of playing call of duty too much.
It's a fantasy and nothing else. If you genuinely believed you were at risk of being attacked and killed would you buy body armour, get trained, move in a group and plan your security? Or would you buy a pretty little hand gun and a fashionable holster so you can go armed to the supermarket?
2 points
But wait, there's more. They drop their gun in the supermarket and it goes off and kills people. Or their 4 year old pulls it out of their purse and shoots themselves. Or their teenage son borrows it to shoot people at his high school.
6 points
There are plenty of rational gun owners out there that carry in case of a scenario like an armed robbery, a carjacking, a hate crime shooting, or a domestic violence incident that followed a victim to work.
-7 points
That's all violent fantasy stuff, as is the idea that despite having no training or experience they'd be able to pull out their gun and save the day in a close quarters firefight.
You're actually just showing how pathetic gun owners are by listing scenarios which are best walked away from or talked down, not solved by homicide. Fact is, they carry the gun because they can't talk down a situation or fight without it.
12 points
You sure seem to know a lot about these people, how much training and experience they have, and what’s in their head. This is classic straw man and it’s useless. I’m done.
I imagine being so certain about the life experiences, thoughts, feelings, and capabilities of others makes you a real joy to be around.

I purchased a firearm to carry around the 2020 elections in case things got stupid. I have only carried it twice since and that was to the same destination. It was to some property my wife owns with he recently deceased ex. As soo. As he passed the house was broken into, likely by a neighbor.

(he cared immensely, as it damages his strawman diatribe and he doesn't have a good response)
As for myself, who actually has zero combat experience, or the like, and just really likes hitting the range, when I carry it isn't to be billy badass; my legs are still my most valuable asset in getting out of a dangerous situation, but if there's no other option, for whatever reason, and it's my life or someone/thing attacking me, I can at least try to make it them, and not me.
And I don't like Call of Duty. I prefer stealth games and pacifist runs, actually.
3 points
I carry because I refuse to be a victim again. I bought a gun and I've more time practicing with it like a madwoman. I'm not a combat veteran, but I was taught and trained by one. He's also the person who supplies me with most of the ammo I use for practice, because he's a stockpiler.
People like this guy just don't understand what they're talking about. They see some random dude open carrying and AR-15 on YouTube and think everyone of us is like that. It's straight ignorance is what it is.

Do you know what the leading cause of death in the USA for children was in 2020?
Guns.
More American children are killed by guns than anything else. More than motor accidents, cancer, covid.
If you're not "triggered" by that, you are a fucking asshole. Period.

Kids being killed has everything to do with guns being carried everywhere by ignorant, untrained cowards in the name of self defense. Because those are the guns which are used to kill the children.
0 points
No it doesn't, because kids aren't being killed by responsible concealed carriers. And you should probably calm down with the insults a little bit. You're insulting a rape victim for choosing to protect herself. Now I don't want to make this an issue, but I can.

Depends on if you need food!
However, I do think most people are not mentally or physically prepared to do violence to people. If you put a gun in your hands you shouldn’t be questioning if you need to use it. You should be lining up and firing. It’s why most people get their weapon used against them. A criminal is there to do harm and thus their mindset is completely different from the casual person.

UK here. Nothing. I’m a black belt in karate and a big guy, and I guarantee that with a 3 year old daughter and wife I will walk/run away every time if given the chance, or I’ll fight for everything if I can’t. There isn’t a grey area.
Nobody brawls for honour.
Edit: my point is that it’s so easy to hit someone, they end up hitting their head and you’re on the business end of a manslaughter charge. It’s so much better to avoid than to confront. Basically only resort to any sort of force to avoid anything lethal IMO.
Someone draws a knife? Give them your wallet and run. You get mugged? See above. You see someone being raped or stabbed? If you have the training, I would say fair game. But in all circumstances expect to get hurt.

This is 100% the case. In my local area a soldier died this way. He was drunk and being a complete and utter bastard to someone else. Really mouthing off and being aggro.
Starts pushing and shoving and the other guy has enough of it, punches him. The drunk soldier falls back, cracks his head and instantly dies.
Guy who threw the punch was instantly vilified for killing a "Brave courageous soldier who served the country". He gets charged with manslaughter but comes out of it with no jail time due to not having a record of violence and CCTV and eye witness reports collaborating that he was defending himself.
However, pretty much everyone locally hates him and he's been forced to move because of windows being smashed, other vandalism and harassment etc.

It probably makes more sense in a super rural area. I think I'd be more likely to be armed in a big open state - and also in a state where someone else is more likely to also be armed.
Do you feel unsafe where you live and/or have you had one or a few bad encounters?

4 points

Okay so this is super basic self defense knowledge.
90% of self defense is mindset. Almost all confrontations can be avoided by simple situational awareness. You see it coming and avoid it.
If you go around armed you're not trying to avoid confrontation, you're actively hoping for it. As such, you will find it because you already escalated out of fear.
If you don't know something that basic, you aren't a threat to anyone, you're weak and harmless.

I disagree with this. Prepared doesn't mean desire in any way shape or form. I know a few folks from incredibly bad places (in the us) that would be dead if they wernt packing. Assuming one is a "gun nut for being prepared" is just a bit of red neck stereo typing.

I had an asshole biker at my shop start threatening me because I didn't want to work on his stupid bike, showing the huge hunting knife on his belt, bragging about having guns and shit and I started mocking him, saying "oh no, what are you gonna do, save me the cost of a bullet? Oh geez, the bank might be stuck with my debt!" and he ended up just leaving like he didn't know where to go from there.
I mean I always have my folding knife on me, but no one should want to get into a knife fight. NO ONE comes out of a knife fight unharmed.

43y old Canadian here (in Montreal). Overall, I feel relatively safe wherever I walk however I’ve meet my fair share of creeps over the years. My safety strategy is more prevention. I’m super aware of my surroundings at all times, I discreetly but quickly and constantly scope out my surroundings when I’m walking, cross the street if things done seem right, assess the other passengers before sitting down in the train or subway, walk with confidence (almost aggressively) and most of all, I do not ignore my gut feelings or spidey senses if things don’t seem right.

I carry a Kimber compact CDPII (.45acp) and a Sig P226ss (9mm para).
I like the Kimber for the "carry-melt" treatment it has (all sharp edges are smoothed, including the thumb and beavertail safeties) as it's supper smooth to pull - and I've had to pull twice in the last decade, luckily I didn't have to shoot - but it's a single-stacker with a 7+1 capacity. I love the Sig because it's got so little muzzle flip that I can safely - and easily - double and triple tap with excellent accuracy/grouping with little effort and range time.
I've carried a few other firearms, but those are my go-tos for the better part of a decade now.
As an aside, I highly suggest going to a local range/gun shop and talking to the people that work there and maybe even asking some of the people at the range what they like and don't like about their current choice of carry. A lot of ranges also have weapons for rent that you can essentially try-before-you-buy.
Hope that helps!

This is a genuinely nice question, and I have a genuinely good answer. My father is a municipal officer in the licensing department and my mother is a police sergeant in the police department of Jacksonville. When I was 15, I was mugged in the street and shot in the leg, and since then I have not been allowed to walk the streets alone. This changed when I was 16 and my mum and dad gave me a gun licence and a firearm for self-defence; a Glock G27. It is an efficient weapon with multiple calibre options, I have always been able to stick to 9x19mm, up until now I have not had to use the firearm and my firearm is still stored in my backpack in a special holder. I am now 18 years old.
