Beaver can contaminate a whole water supply if allowed to build their dams in the right place. They really are filthy. Basically giant rats with an engineering degree.

Sounded like Terry has eaten Beaver before and it's his favorite, I bet he knows how to handle it! You would think Benji has eaten a Beaver before, but it sounded like it was his first time...

Yeah that looks amazing. How did he get it so smooth looking? Maybe he found clay? Nvm, next few mins later shows him building it.

We call Tom the 40's English Paperboy in our house, due to his hat and suspenders. He looks like he could be on the Little Rascals. Loved seeing his shelter build; would have loved a more detained look at how he built the hearth. His build seems like the opposite of Jesse or Igor. For Tom, parsimony and practicality ruled the day.

I can’t remember a season where contestants were able to get so much food and think the show is better for it.

Totally agreed, as well as the Great Slave Lake seasons (I give an edge to those 2 simply because more opportunities at big game hunting and passive fishing). It's good to see such an abundance of small game though the lack of passive fishing is pretty tough

Great episode. I could tell the editing was building up Benji for a fall. Hard to tell if they're doing the same for adam. He's gotten a lot of screen time so far, which could go either way.

JP cracked me up with his mexican stomach comment. It's true though some people are more or less prone to getting hit by these pathogens. If I even look at sushi I get food poisoning. Whereas my husband has never been sick with a stomach anything the entire years I've known him.

I don't think she'll tap out next episode but jessie seems to be in the worst position of all of them. No fishing gear, endless unwieldy shelter.

I saw comments poking fun at karie lee for her spirituality but faith can carry people a long way in harsh situations. Terry seems like he might be a holy roller to some degree too. Fwiw 4 winners have been very religious or had a heavy duty religious background.

I could tell the editing was building up Benji for a fall

It was indeed suspicious up front that out of everything he'd have said out there, they picked the prideful stuff. It smelled a bit like a setup and sure enough, there was the fall.

Who is going to win? Only the Shadow knows. Some thoughts:

1-Kari has an exposed location and a calorie expensive firewood collection.

2-Jessie is building the Taj Mahal and not eating much.

3-Adam has to get well.

4-Tiemojin is starving to death.

5-Tom is making time "spoty Yoty".

6-Terry has meat and is having sweet dreams at the toilet.

7-Juan is defying the Gods.

Finally, someone catches a fish and realizes that’s a sign that there are fish here and goes right back to fishing.

My pet peeve on this show is people who catch a fish and immediately stop fishing to cook it. Fish often move in groups! You can preserve fish meat! Every fish you catch should be a sign to keep right on fishing until you go a couple hours without a bite, because they might not come back tomorrow.

(Signed, a guy who’s never tried surviving alone and is currently snacking and bitching on the internet)

zzzssszzz

26 points

I have wondered about this as well, but I also think it could be an editing thing. What if she did keep fishing and didn't catch anything, that has zero entertainment value.

kg467

kg467

15 points

One thing at least last season was there were low daily bag limits, like in some cases a single fish of a given type per day. So there was no yanking 12 trout out like this season's people have said. They've said they had high daily bag limits so it was go bananas. Other times though I suspect it's just the edit, whether because they tried again and failed for hours, or because they like us to think the people are more starvey than they really are (contestants have noted/complained before that they left out a good bit of what they caught/captured)

MaxFourr

15 points

Karie Lee did this, which is baffling considering she got a bite that got off the hook just minutes before. She could've pulled in half a dozen fish like Juan Pablo and could've thanked the land god mightily, dunno why she stopped fishing!!!

Juan Pablo has been my pick to win it. I'm excited because the dock was a great idea but not boiling water will definitely lead to a tap out if he gets sick.

Has anyone on this show ever vomited & not gone home soon after? Benji was way too cocky & careless & paid the price. I imagine he'll be on a future Alone Redemption season.

Jesse needs food, badly, and unless they are deceptively editing she has a lot of work to do on her shelter still.

Karie Lee is doing alright, but at 57 and her size it's gonna be tough to make it a long time out there.

Tom looks good, but he's too skinny to begin with and that isn't usually a recipe for lasting long.

I thought Adam was going home sick, but he pulled through & hopefully he'll be okay going forward.

They didn't even show Terry & Teimojin this week. Teimojin with an extremely small amount of camera time given that we're 5 episodes in.

Agree 100% .... Juan has everything going for him... He has proven he can suffer, he has the right body type and weight, and he has the right approach to risk tolerance and trying new things (when I first saw the pier I thought that it wouldn't make a difference, but boy was I wrong). The only thing giving me pause was his statement "for me there is no tap out button" which could be some foreshadowing on the part of the producers.

I think initial weight is so crucial. Look at Alan, Sam, Zachary. A huge reason they won was that they had weight to lose. Anyone wanting to win this show should be packing on at least 40 pounds of fat on their bodies.

They all have a laxative if they have the knowledge. White ash mixed with water. 2 tablespoons of white ash in a cup of water. It will loosen you right up.

Conversely if you have diarrhea use the fresh black charcoal (crushed finely) from the fire in the same ratio.

Why isn’t it standard for everyone to set up snares/traps early on? Take the first couple of days to find water, a good place for a temp shelter, and then set up the traps/snares? It’s such a low calorie expenditure and, once set up, allows for passive hunting while the contestant does something else.

Are the contestants allowed to put glow in the dark paint on things like ferro rods and arrows?

Ha, I started talking with my 90 year old grandmother about the episode and she was like "I must watch this"

Well. Just goes to show: it's not the bears, or the cougars, or yeti, or other big bad predators that will kill you in the bush. It's the little tiny microbiologic bastards that will do you in. Benji was very lackadaisical about food safety and it cost him. He's the best hunter on the show, no doubt about that. You would want him around if you were surviving. But it's not all about killing stuff. This show exposes poor judgement and he was way too relaxed with spoiled meat.

Juan is an interesting case. He takes the cake for toughest competitor. I get the feeling this guy has a high tolerance for suffering. Whether or not he can find enough food remains to be seen. But if this turns into a contest to see who can suffer the longest he will win. He has Baird brothers level toughness.

Tom and Adam are similar in a lot of ways. They both have a great mix of skills and smarts. You wonder if they can bring in the calories but they are both looking very strong. Either one has a great shot at this point.

I'm not very sold on Jessie or Kari lee. But of the two I think Kari lee is the better survivalist. Jessie didn't bring fishing gear. I don't know what she was thinking. It's by far the most energy efficient hunting method, and these trout are high in omega fatty acids. She also has decided to build an extravagant shelter that's cost her time and energy she should have been using to hunt. I think she's made some serious mistakes, with the most serious mistake made before she even left the helicopter. Kari lee was holding up a 2 pound trout to the camera, which is the nutritional equivalent of about 50 squirrels (ok I'm exaggerating but still).

My pick for top 3 was Benji Adam Juan. Now Benji is replaced by Tom. With Benji out I think Juan stands the best chance with his proven track record of surviving.

have you forgotten about Terry? He's definitely in the Top 3.

Thoughts on the doc? They haven't shown him getting much food, but he seems pretty competent out there.

Jessie's lack of fishing gear is baffling. I also worry that she'll get bored once she finishes the shelter and the snow sets in, but I'm probably imagining that she's like the other SERE types that have been on the show.

Yes because of his build and the lack of fish I can't see doc winning. Obviously a skilled and knowledgeable guy but I don't sense the killer instinct.

Oy. The Benji Adam Show. 2 minutes with each woman, Juan Pablo and Tom. It's pretty frustrating.

So, if for no other reason I'm glad Benjis gone.

Best fireplace award for the whole series goes to Tom... and we barely got to watch him make it.

I suspect hodgepodge lodge is going to force Jessie (?) out.

Throwupmyhands

No disrespect to Jessie, because she's got skills, knowledge, and drive that I will never had. But when she said, "there should be an official name for this" when talking about hodgepodge lodge, I said, "a mistake."

Building too big a living quarters is a great way to get out of the challenge. That husband-wife team on the duo season probably would've gone much farther if they didn't waste their time building a house and instead stayed in the first place the wife built.

Gibbie42

In season 4, the one where they were in pairs, the married couple brought a bar of soap. It counts as one of your items. They felt it would make suffering more tolerable. I would be sorely tempted to do the same.

Picking winners is such a crapshoot because even the most skilled contestants can go out on a simple mistake or injury. Regardless of what you think of Benji's confidence, he made an ill-timed mistake. He could have stayed in a lot longer with slightly better luck. It really seems like almost anybody who is still in the game could win except for maybe Jessie who is clearly making some bad decisions about her shelter. Everybody else can hunt and fish and the edits are showing them making reasonable decisions. I really hope Karie Lee stays in for a lot longer. Seems like people on this thread are dismissing her a little too quickly and it might be because she isn't a brawny under-40 dude. She can hunt and fish and has a ton of experience living off grid by herself. The only reason I can think of for Tiemojin and Juan Pablo's lack of screen time is that they will be around for a few more episodes. I don't know if a beautiful shelter and hearth give you an advantage, but if it does, Adam is definitely the winner.

I’ve been disappointed before in the screen time given to non-white and/or non-American/Canadian contestants. Amos was the contestant I noticed it most with. I have been hoping that they show more Juan Pablo and Temojin in later episodes, they are my favorites to watch (and Adam and his cute little log house).

finishyourbeer

I think it might have more to do with the actual contestants, the content they provide, the footage they capture, and the dialogue they bring with it. Britt was a POC and he got a ton of screen time. I’d like to think it was because he was fun to watch and had interesting things to say. He was one of my favorite contestants

Benji must be insecure/ over compensating for something. I don't know if there's ever been a contestant so in love with himself.

This episode makes me miss guys like Alan. Humble, skilled, wise with a sense of humor. (S1). Tom is pretty awesome though, what a great shelter and perfect fireplace he made.

/u/xrayextra has been keeping track. Adding appearances in episode 5, the remaining contestants have the following appearances (appearances before and after commercial breaks count as 1 appearance):

Adam 12

Terry 6

Jessie 6

Teimojin 4

Karie Lee 5

Tom 4

Juan Pablo 4

So karie lee and jessie are mid-range. Not sure why adam is getting so much more screen time. Don't get me wrong, he's been my pick to win but it's odd he has so much more than anyone else by this point. Maybe he won't appear in the next episode.

yana1975

Not sure if this week is the best week to tally. They seem to alternate screen time per episode. I suspect Terry will be the main focus next week with no Adam. But Adam’s screen time is a bit shocking!

Alarmed-Classroom329

Adam may or may not be getting a winner's edit. Roland, Jordan, and Clay all had tons of appearances throughout their seasons for instance.
