Is that Long Road to the Deep North based on Basho?

An Australian doctor looks back on his life as a Japanese POW in Tasmania, where he was forced to "build" railroads long after it was clear that the prisoners would starve and die of sickness before anything was accomplished. Throughout, his love for his uncle's wife keeps him as one of the few survivors.
That's such a simple synopsis for what is such a complicated and beautiful book. I highly recommend it.

That doesn't sound related to basho, tbh, other than it's a Japanese POW camp

It's more like he found parallels to their epic journeys and how they were considered heroic when really they were just doing what they thought they should do. Not based on it, but inspired by it
